Venetia, Henley looks like an awesome character. He kind of reminds me of a guy who's been around and has a lot of great stories from his earlier days. His hat puts a smile on my face every time I see it.

Just me experimenting with different styles. It's been sooo long since I tried a cartoony style.
The right arm is kind of weird (I've always had trouble drawing arms :x ). Any advice is appreciated.

Wow Venetia! your pictures are so emotional and inspirational. When people say pictures and the thousandwords things. They meant you. But I also think you should take a little of your own medicine about being more confident with your strokes. The second one seems to have lines going everywhere.

@ Alypt. I like it. That looks like a hot teacher. However I do think the head is a bit big for the body. I suffer at that too. Unless that was intended for your style

@Moe. I love it, good style, nice technique and a coloring for flavor. One thing though. Head seems scruntched too, not just the ear.

I was doodling away for today and I seemed to have forgot the bottom of the gun and hand in her left hand.

does the butt seem big to you? something's also off with the chest area, and the leg/foot seems a bit undefined, although it's rather good enough like that. Check out the hands, they also feel curvish and a bit cartoony.

And what's up with you drawing lotsa long haired check in chains?

Butt is big on purpose. *wink* I'm not sure what you mean about not being defined, it's in boots, but if you can show me so I can better understand that would be good. Sorry about the hands, I'm still not a pro at them yet, I gotta work at that.

It's a fetish.

LOL!

Well it's my character for Strawberries little story in this thread here New Story WIP. The character I've been drawing with the chains is Reilly Button, it's because of her background she has those chains.

Oh. I won't comment on the chains.

The torso may be too short, but it's hard to tell since the image is so large. The arms need extending a bit

Thanks!
Yep, it was intentional. I was going for cartoony proportions.

The drawing looks great, btw. I really like her 'don't mess with me' attitude she's got. I'm guessing you were a bit too conscious when you were drawing the hair. It doesn't seem to show the same fluency in strokes as her bangs do. But it's still a good drawing nonetheless.

by undefined i meaned that it's only a shape, with no shadow shading or 3-d casting or whatever, not sure what's the word. But i actually have no problem with this one, honestly, it's definitely a foot, and we know the angle and stuff of it.

although i thought she was wearing stockings, not boots x:

Would this style be considered as more anime-ish or pseudo-anime..-ish?

this probably isn't the right place since i don't even have a sketch to post but i can't think of a better place for it ~

does anyone know any good resources/advice concerning cartooning? pref. stuff about the basics; line strength, simplification of features, stuff like like that. if you'll notice one of the main things i struggle with in my cartoony stuff (in addition to the myriad of other things) is clean lines and simplifying their features. like, i use way too many lines when the key to good cartooning is being expressive with simple lines. does that make sense?

you ever check out any of preston blair's books? he was an animator for disney for several decades, but he's probably best known for the books he writes on animation. cartoon animation is a compilation of some of those books, and although it says 'animation' the entire first half of the book is devoted to cartoon structure, lines, and all that good stuff. it's bit old-timey (40s- and 50s-style animation) but the core concepts are all there.

you could probably download a .pdf of the book somewhere on the internet but a hard copy on amazon is less than $20. i'm not sure how helpful you'll find it - you should download the .pdfs just in case - but as a resource for classic cartooning and animation, it's fantastic.

richard williams: the animator's survival kit

it is just fantastic

it shows you everything you will ever need to know about poses, hand poses, body poses, proportions, skewing proportions, etc etc etc
and then shows you how to move them
with and without props with diff directions with diff sexes and species and weight proportions

it even shows you what always gets me all hot & bothered about cartooning:
the incredibly basic shapes which you can use to combine to make up a body or a face
like jessica rabbit? she started as a circle over a heart over a teardrop
(p.s. he did Who Framed Roger Rabbit?)

its very cool

i;m checking out drawspace.com and it seems pretty good so far
either that or the teacher's ability to draw was completely natural talent and basically just showing off to noobs
