The sketch thread!

so um one of these days i'll stick with things long enough to sorta-finish them, start my own thread, and quit spammin this one but this is not that day

shay%20redux1.jpg

realized I was disregarding all the stuff I'm always bitching at others for, so now I'm trying to go with something more realistic as opposed to the outright disney-looking stuff from before

my main concern is making the arms look natural resting in the pockets, since in-game it'll only be displayed from the waist-up

e; updated real fast

b-bazongas @_@

in all seriousness though, the profile looks nice but there's something...off about the frontal view's face. The eyes seem a bit lopsided and perhaps you want to go with a different nose view?

I love my bazongas, har har har. XD

As for the eyes, I suck at lining them up - that's for sure. See, I draw at an angle, which usually messes things up. A different nose view? Each time I drew a different nose view, Star would complain to me. @_@

One thing I can tell you is to try and make the eyelashes a little less thick, have more of them, and space them out. You also have to be careful of not having too many that are separated when you do this, and making them look spidery. The way you've got them now makes it look like she's either got really cheap mascara that clumps up badly, or she's rockin' the Yugioh look. Sorry if it's confusing the way I'm explaining it, I'll try to draw you up an example in a little bit.

And if you're mimicking Yugioh... I really wouldn't. If you want an example of cool, unique stylized anime using super-defined black eyelashes and stuff, look up Kazuma Kaneko's art. The only thing that bugs me about his art is that some of the characters have eyes that are waay too far apart.

I know exactly how you feel though - you'll have days where you can spend HOURS and nothing looks good enough at all, but the important thing is to just not give up! You're getting better all the time, and the key is to practice, practice, practice, and just try not to get discouraged.

I don't watch Yugioh, so I wouldn't really be mimicking it. I'm actually trying to copy a western artist - I don't know his name, only his comics. XD I might give up on eyelashes all together, since I can never seem to get them right... O.O

It's a good thing you guys are giving her some constructive criticism. I think it sounds better coming from you guys than it does coming from me. I'm supposed to love her drawings but she wants to improve so bad I tell her what is wrong with them and she sometimes takes them me being a straight critic against realism.

Look at your avatar and then look at your side-view drawing. Your avatar has the correct width for a sideview head, your drawing looks like she got pancaked.

On the second drawing. See the lace around the neck? It should go down the shirt in a "V" not across cause that's a different shirt. Also the lace on the sleeves of the shirt should go downwards towards the bottom due to gravity and not toward the arm in a circular motion.

He's right about the eyelashes. Makes her look like spiderman. Make the lashes thinner and not s all around. No style should defy gravity and nature. (Lol cloud's hair) On first drawing eyelashes should go forward not backward

NO! MINE! @_@ *steals*

@Stawberry: Another thing to notice is that in your profile view... she has no cranium. Look at this:

The back of the head actually is just a circle, then the chin is a triangle (much like drawing the head from the front)

Hi Im bacon and I cannot draw

whoah, very cool. you have that sort of unassumingly creepy Yume Nikki thing down pretty well, looks like. I'll agree that you could use more practice, but I like the concepts a lot.

Your people need work but your monsters are beautiful. Most likely cause you have trouble with anatomy and size telling how big to draw what and in what areas, plus major skipage in detail. It is cute though. Except the cut of arm that's freaky D:

There should be a sketch thread for NSFW stuff and I should be allowed to post that type of art, cause I draw lots, the kind of stuff you see on deviantart so it's not more than just nude

NSFW stuff is fine in this thread, as long as it's properly tagged as such.
what REALLY? Like really really indearly really with a cherry on top? As long as they aren't doing dirty things? In that case I'll post something I sketched today. Remove it if it's bad.

I really like the elongated limbs, but that's an entirely personal preference-type thing. "Generic lady 1" looks rather broad-chested, but aside from the long limbs that you yourself noted and acknowledged, it looks like you're really on the right track with your anatomy. That one hand you drew looks pretty good - you're very talented, and I'd love to see some stuff not drawn on lined paper. :|: (Have you ever looked into printer paper? It's a cheaper alternative to sketch paper if you're strapped on money.)

Your monsters are awesome and imaginative. I especially love the mannequin.

the way the limbs curve on that first girl reminds me of that old japanese style of drawing. I'd like to see the platform she seems to be sitting/standing/lying whatever on, because right not it looks offish. Check out the elbows and arms, there's some squiggly-ishness in the lineart.
The second pics, the two girls, look a lot defined by their hair, although I do notice lots of small differences. The collarbone(?) above the right chick's breast might be a bit too defined.

bacon: I swear you've done a previous set of this. Cool things dude, undefined and cute. At least the monsters.

Well tbh those were drawn in a steno notebook, which is convenient because I usually only draw during school, and since I havent really drawn in a month or two. Ill make sure to steal some printing paper when I go back this Monday. I laugh because dadevster said the exact same thing about lined paper last time I posted something. x:'

For some reason, I cant draw guys. Well its not like I can draw ladies either. But you get the picture. Thank you, Ive been trying to do portraits but there is always something not right. :c

your drawings look really sketchy like you draw your lines in short little bursts and keep going until you finish a part. i used to do this all the time but it's really not a good way to draw. i think venetia is more the expert on hand motions and whatnot but sometimes it helps to really use your whole arm when outlining things instead of just your wrist. obviously you can't do this for tiny details but when you're just sketching a skeleton or whatever try and use broad, flowing strokes and use your whole arm. once you get used to the motions your sketches will look tons cleaner and everything will be where you want it to be.
