The sketch thread!

Redesigned the node's head a bit. I'm gonna shrink it and pixel it.

How do you do your faces so well, makasu? It looks very nice. The chin is sorta pointy :P
I guess it comes from doing sooooooo many portraits. Eventually my anatomy gets like put in place. But for the most part I still struggle with eye placement. And plus I'm currently in the process of trying to define my "style" so its a certain style I'm trying to achieve. Nonetheless its point because I have like smoothed out that part yet. Hahahah

Peri: I would love to see that pixelized. I bet its going to be epic.

Me practicing style again.

(I really like the eyes, but that's about it. I doubt I could duplicate them again)

Me showing my boyfriend I can't do sideviews. XD

(I probably gave her a long neck, and fudged up on other things, but at least I proved him right). :3

Y'know, Strawberry, I really recommend trying to master realism before branching into stylized art. You need a solid understanding of the fundamentals before you start changing things around. Imo you should do some studies and draw from reference.

Well, do you know of where I can find some good photo references? I can't try without good ones. I have tried drawing from a real-life photo reference, but alas... I failed. Not shocking, though. O.o

Thanks for that! :3

I use Deviantart sometimes too (I just drew a picture using a photo as a reference) - but I don't think I should upload it... XD

I think you should post it. Its only a sketch and many of the artists on here are more than happy and willing to provide you with some C&C which can only help you prove [[as well as anger you]] but thats the price that comes with being an artist. So don't be afraid. And the frontal view looks fine its just those lips are incredibly...whats the word? Long? I gotta agree with Peri that you should try drawing from reality more and then branch off into more eastern or western style as you get better. But everyone's gotta start somewhere.

Okies, I uploaded the picture. XD Right here: (I see that the paper kind of got folded up... T.T)

I did actually do another picture, using a photo as a reference out of boredom...

Though, this reminds me... I should remind Star to bring home some more computer paper for drawing purposes. :3

The first one isn't that bad. The second one either. You have basic facial proportions down it seems its just since its atypical anime mixed with some splashes of realism it makes for an odd blend...I'm not quite sure what it is but I think rounded chins as opposed to the typical anime triangle chins can work in your favor.

But if you're drawing from reference I can't tell you what to look at to make it more realistic...Because I used to do the same thing when I drew portraits....

Man looking at this is terrible. I don't know how I broke away from it but I just did and now I'm drawing things like.
Lilo_trad.jpg

which isn't a good example but you get what I'm saying?

Yup yup!

I get what you're saying.

I'm not really trying to go all the way realistic, because it isn't totally me, but I also don't want to be all the way anime (because everything does that - not because I don't like it - and I actually can't convey what I think is cute about at all). I don't really want to draw little detail in the human face because it doesn't appeal to what I want to draw - and some of it may look better shading-wise.

I actually don't really know what suits me the best for drawing. O.oa

Well there's nothing wrong with anime. My style is heavily influenced by it as is a bunch of other styles. Its just I'm more american-ized anime rather than japanese anime.

I'd suggest checking out Takeshi's work he might have somewhat of something you can adapt to. Or better yet just draw influence from your favorite artist. Mimic their style and develop it into your own.

hey makusu, your realism artwork inspired me to draw this. Drawn on the usual crap I do it on. there's some obvious disproportionalism here and my animeism edged in a bit, but I fairly liked how fast I did this.

can ANYONE get me some tutorials on how to draw the shadows on jeans? like seriously, I suck at those so bad.

The head looks pretty good but your hand still looks very flat. Drawing hands is the bane of my existence (and of most artists out there) so maybe some tutorials on how to draw the hand might help. The thumb in particular on that drawing looks very wonky, and the way it's grabbing the leg makes the thigh look very thin and two dimensional.

If it makes you feel any better, 95% of the hands I draw still look like blobs with stumps ;-;

Yeah hands are a pain in the arse, a good tip i can think of is to shade the fingers and if your drawing a women make them slender and more round at the end, basically fingers are composed of circles(joints), and cylinderovaly thing(not quite cylindrical, and has oval like qualities). If my explanation isn't good enough I'll upload a quick tut, ah screw it I'll do it anyways.
