I watched Persepolis (a French film) a couple of days ago. Without subtitles. And understood it completely. Oh yes.
I honestly think this should've won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature over Ratatouille. I love Ratatouille, it's my third favourite Pixar film, but Persepolis is really incredible. It tells the true story of a girl living in Iran during the time of the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war in the 80s. It basically follows her life as she moves to Europe for a while, then moves back, coping with depression, change, and death. It incorporates humor very well, surprisingly. The animation is far from groundbreaking, but it's done really well and feels very smooth and natural. (it's done in the same style as the Persepolis graphic novels, actually, and it looks very good) Some may feel that the plot is broken and jagged, since it more or less hops from event to event with little to no break in between, but I didn't mind it much at all. I really recommend Persepolis to anyone who enjoys foreign films and wants to watch something different for a change. (although chances are you're going to want subtitles, since I heard the dub wasn't all that great. they never are.)
