Don't go outside at night, especially with your nice things.
And don't screw around with lava when you're holding all of your nice things.

And... is that Hayley Williams?

this is pretty much essential to Minecraft right now, since none of this is mentioned ingame. besides that, there's basically no wrong way to do things, and the penalties for dying are pretty lax. go hog wild!

Yeah, until you die at the bottom of a vast mine and there's no way you can get back there to save all of your diamonds... Tread cautiously, and always have at least 2 bacon! Have at least 4 and maybe a bucket of water if you're going spelunking!

I finally got a chance to really try SMP when it's actually possible to die, and it is so much fuggen fun. There's also a lot of possibilities for new games, too, like a snowball fight over a pit of lava (snowballs can't hurt you but can push you off a pillar into lava, for example)

If Notch fixes terrain generation and adds even some of the stuff he is talking about adding, this game will be pretty bad ass. For me, though, the current terrain generation is a deal breaker for SSP, the terrain is way too boring now.

Minecraft needs rendering occlusion and I will be happy.

Lies. You will want to keep eating, and breathing, and living too. Jerk.

No, just kidding, but actually optimizing the rendering of cubes is actually pretty tough. The way you do occlusion culling is you render the bounding box of each object and check to see if the bounding box would be visible. The problem is, each object in Minecraft is already a box. Likewise, in other games, you can reduce the number of triangles by simplifying objects that are far away, so a 20,000 poly character becomes a 2 poly imposter. For cubes, the best you can hope for is from 12 polys to 2 polys, and there's processing power you have to waste to generate the imposter for all the cubes, and then that ends up being more resources used than if you just rendered the cubes.

Instead, you've got to come up with new tricks. Though, it would help if he wasn't using a bad wrapper for a bad language lol. The price for portability/compatibility!

so I load up a new world and head to the first likely cavern I see. what's in there?

a huge chasm extending deeper than the fog. I gotta climb down this now, you understand.

I mined a circular staircase and went down one of those once. I ended up reaching a pit of lava with plenty of diamonds around it.

Ha, that sounds bad ass. In the SMP world me and a friend have we had something similar. It was a chasm them led straight down to water and Lava. I didn't know the lava was there until I used the water to drown a zombie and went down and saw the obsidian underneath lol. What's funny is we had to do very little digging. We happened to build our first house right on top of a cavern, dug down about 6 blocks and found it. Then one leg of that cavern was like 6 blocks or so from another big one.

I'm still building my massive pyramid. And I have so much cobblestone it's not even funny. I think it's time I leveled out another area and put that cobble to good use.

yesss official modding support

I think I should avoid the SA Minecraft thread for a while, though. I can imagine a couple people dominating that thread with whinging about
emot-qq.gif
narrative in my lego game
emot-qq.gif
and probably also characterizing Notch as Wario for removing the "access to the finished product" clause from purchases after the 20th.

more internal testing sounds like it'll make everyone happy, though.

apparently the spriter Notch hired has arrived and will start work soon! I forget his name, but I've seen some of his work and the man is amazing. should be able to juggle Minecraft's blocky appearance with richness of detail no problem.

also apparently Notch is adding synthesizers to the game! stack blocks on another block type, power it with redstone. height of stack determines pitch, material determines sound. it sounds like timing everything to make a song of any length would be a little tough, but I'm expecting a lot of cool videos by people with the patience to deal with it to pop up after it's added.

Actually, it doesn't say that people who buy beta won't get the full version. It actually says they will get al updates up to release. I believe what it means is he plans on making expansions/DLC that if you didn't by alpha you will have to pay for.

honestly, his language is a little vague. DLC seems like a bit of a stretch, though; he's never mentioned microtransactions before, and they'd probably be a horrible idea anyway (especially since the modding community is so extreme)

expansions might be what he means, but I'm not sure what there is to expand.
