thing is, the modding community has done all three of these things already, and this is in a time where they need to muck around in obfuscated code to accomplish anything. imagine if Little Big Planet started selling ramps and platforms and things on PSN.

Yeah, I have never played Little Big Planet so I don't get the reference :P

I didn't realize that people had modded that stuff yet, so IDK. I know, though, that the post says updates up to release are free, and any bug fixes are free, so I don't know. Maybe new quests and stuff like that?

yeah there's already been a ton of mods with new recipes, block and mobs. Some of them look pretty cool but I choose not to use them because I like to stick to the intended gameplay elements. Only mod I use is ambient occlusion :shades:

Well, he has already said he is adding quests, and NPCs, and AI villages and stuff like that. Not sure if that means there will be story associated with the quests.

I don't recall notch ever saying anything about quests... and there are already npcs since that's what mobs are (non player characters)

By NPCs I meant like that would actually build and destroy and stuff like that. Some of this info is actually coming from what a psuedo-employee of mojang says, so he could be mistaken.

he has "contact" with notch in the same way everyone else with a Twitter account does. don't know if you've noticed, but the man has a small knack for self-aggrandization.

while we're on the subject of Minecraft's getsatisfaction page, how depressing is it that "HEY NOTCH WILL THERE BE DRAGONS/VOLCANOES/HEY LISTEN TO MY IDEA" rocketed to the top within hours of it being founded? Minecraft is great, but it has the worst fanbase out of basically any program.

Haha, yeah, the problem is pretty similar to the problem you have in a game development community. You get a bunch of people thinking that their random ideas are the best ideas ever. The good news is that it seems like notch is pretty good at filtering those out. Ha, I suppose you get real good real quick at filtering those when you are the one who has to implement them.

Also I know you saw that link, lol. Biome mod exists, but why not make vanilla MC better :P

Oh, if you look at notch's twitter, he mentions expansions a couple times, so yeah, I am thinking people who buy beta still get the full version, but there will be expansions. And he also says specifically that people who bought alpha get all expansions.

that's actually pretty neat, then! I'm glad I got in on it when I did.

as far as quests and NPCs go, it does seem like a logical extension of the "subtle narrative" he was talking about in that post Dr. Funk linked. I'm sort of interested in what direction he'll take it; Minecraft has been so freeform up until now that I haven't given a second thought to plot or anything. I'm gonna avoid thinking too much on it for now, because I've written this post up a couple times now and it's always dissolved into "HOLY SHIT 3D DWARF FORTRESS YESSSSSS"

Yeah, I am guessing the guy he brought in to do legal/financial stuff told him that if he didn't change the model he would stop making money pretty soon :P

that... probably isn't true. unless everyone with a computer has already bought Minecraft, I don't see sales petering out all of a sudden.

people bitch a lot about his sales models and such, but they're all big softies who bought it anyway. it's just an occupational hazard of being a super-visible millionaire developer. imagine if Sir Richard Branson started tweeting for advice on what colours to paint his house.

Ha, I wasn't saying I had any problem with his sales model. I was just taking a guess as to why he would change it. I mean, he has been planning on continuing to add to the game after gold release all along.

yeah, I guess I was being pretty unnecessarily narrow-minded; I thought you meant that he'd literally go broke, not that expansions would prolong Minecraft's shelf life and provide extra income. I'm sort of dumb and standoffish right now on account of finals aaaaaaugh

you seriously have no idea how tempted I am to just start slinging speculation about what these expansions would contain. I guess I'm a part of the minecraft fanbase too!

but to keep myself from doing that, I'm gonna plug a pretty cool mod. it's called the FancyPack, and it allows you to craft decorative items like furniture, cages, bone and clay ornaments, and other things like that. it also allows you to smelt gravel for road blocks, which increase your speed when you walk on them! (also plain slabs, which have many applications) it's pretty damn awesome. I haven't made a whole lot yet, but once I'm done with a furnished Minecraft mansion I'll let you all know.

Ahaha, that is just too cool. I should look around for more mods. It's too bad the biome mod makes MC crash so often. I looked at the ambient occlusion mod, that looks pretty cool but I will wait til I get my i7 machine going again before I try it.
