I've been considering redoing all my paper-doll assets for Himeko Sutori's portraits. This is my first time really trying to paint something in Photoshop.

Towards the end, I was working pretty quickly and the hair is much more sketched than the face shading.

I'm not sure I'm going to replace all of my portrait assets, but I think if I can get better and faster at it, I'll keep it as an option.

I practiced some calligraphy the other night. I don't actually have calligraphy pens and doing it with a digital pen is tricky with pen pressure. I didn't bother saving anything. Just a bunch of random letter forms in different styles like Carolingian, Gothic, ect...
I also tried it with a flat tipped marker in my sketch book. Idk why but I could still smell the ink fumes the next day.

It's funny, whenever I tried inventing a fantasy script it always ended up as runes, lines & dots, maybe some swirls. It's more of a product of using a pencil. I just didn't have the sense of writing with a brush or flat tip anything. And even though it's purely decorative I think my left-brain influences written language as being quick and strictly communicative.

Also, it's freaky, i attempted to write Japanese and realized I've never actually written katakana kanji & whatnot by hand before. So sitting in my bedroom holding a sharpie pen, my mind was pulling a blank. The only character I could think to draw was 'ki' キ because I some how conceptualize it as looking like an old "key". But I couldn't even remember what 'no' の looked like even though I knew it was round and had a loop in it. It was like my hand was waiting for instructions from my language centers and they were like
Error: ☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐ language support not installed. Handwriting motions not found.

@Nathaniel3W: There's a lot of techniques for hair. I think for what you're doing, you'd want to start off with a large fuzzy brush and a general shape of the hair. Then work down gradually to smaller bushes, getting finer and finer details. There's lots of tutorials for digital painting. I actually worked off your drawings last night meaning to show you an example in stages. But my computer hiccuped and I some how shifted the whole layer off the canvas and then the undo history wouldn't work.

Thanks for the advice Coyote. I'm still practicing at night, so I'll try taking a look at a tutorial that shows the technique you mention. And sorry to hear about the computer hiccup. I would have loved seeing what you were working on.

And as for calligraphy, there are some drawing tablets that detect the tilt of the pen. Mine doesn't. But some do. Also, there are some brush shapes in Photoshop that you can rotate in a little widget at the corner of the screen. So while that doesn't give you as precise control as turning the brush with your hand, it could still give you the angle you need to do calligraphy digitally.

Wizard of Thousand Tortured Eyes

Had fun doing the subtle divide to Spooky's loyalties in this one, he's between two different planets, one being Nadine, which represents his alien experience of being an alien, but also an ally to people he'd come to care about, in comparison to the world he left behind, and never looked back on, Planet Galaxia.

Also those eyes and all his ayyylium features came out super well.

Zardari has always both loved and hated Galaxia, it started out so well for him, a society where you got praised and exalted for finding what you loved doing, and doing your best to get good at it, but he got too good. A Blademaster without equal, he was hired by the directorate personally, but for his power he was feared, even by the directors themselves, so they promoted him to an archbishop, he was now a mule of paperwork, it was at about this point, after long hours of tedium, that he got the idea to become the reckoning of his people, Asarath sought to make use of him, Zardari used Asarath as a means to his ends, and saw the High Vizier as his only ally. Zardari's strength was noticed by the enslaved Sunsmiths of the Xeraphar moon, and offered him an indestructable blade, if he would use it to avenge them, he agreed, and awaited the "Menagerie" to make their move, so that he may make his own. In the span of 12 hours, he had overpowered the directorate, slaughtered his entire people, and obliterated Nadine as well. He had at last, fulfilled his wish, but now bored, he awaited the "Menagerie" to establish him as their new threat, and hoped they may be the only equals he would have, he was not found disappointed, and after his defeat, he destroyed himself by ripping out his GAB, his service to himself and to the universe and those he'd agreed to free, fulfilled.

It's revealed that he is sent to the Mamix, for and I quote "Being too powerful and too dangerous to exist in any plane of existence where immortals or mortals dwelt. However, he was brought back into the fold by Seradath and Bubbles so that he may assist in the 314th Clash, seeing it as a way to be what he had always wanted to be, a big 'fuck you' to the patriachs, he obliged, and joins in the final battle against G0D himself.

Then in Fantasia, he is contacted to help out again, against the Twins, the very supreme powers themselves, he obliges, so he's more of an ally now than an enemy as he is in Menagerie.

While he was seen as a defiler by his people, some of the Universe revere him as a symbol of freedom against monarchy via anarchy, an Icon of Regicide, the Anarchic Annihilator.

I made myself depressed thinking about the need for intimacy and the movie Avatar. Isn't there suppose to be an Avatar 2? I hope they don't ruin it.

I also did some draw requests on a mlp board a few weeks ago. I won't post them all here. Some edgy OCs, memes, and some requests that were suppose to be lewd but I reinterpreted in a more literal sense.

Wew, quite a few things I've done lately.

Firstly, was thing about Yi Hellrider and how she would fight in her final battle where she was actually trying, wrote a whole document about it.

I ended up drawing a really cool Stance for Yi.

Then I've been taking more lessons from my tutor for shaping and anatomical brevity and i think they are defnitely having a positive effect.

The first one has a lot of errors as I went over ambitious, lmao.

Took some battler requests on 4chan's rpg maker general last week. They're not too serious, so when they give me a vague description of a "flower girl" I get to imagine why you'd be fighting a flower girl.

This one's not finished yet. They asked for a "nerd succubus". So glasses and braces are a must, but the braces wouldn't show up when I scale it down. Nerds like to solve rubik cubes, so I figure demon nerds would solve The Lament Configuration (Hellraiser reference).

This was a request from December. Again, you can't expect a serious reply from 4chan. I forget exactly how I worded my offer to draw something. But the first reply was "that fat ass rtp clown naked". They probably didn't think I'd do it. I got a "good job" and "absolute mad man" from it.

This was something from last year too. Concept art for/rpgmg/'s 2017 collaboration game. I had already contributed to the project in june or july, but towards the end of the year nobody wanted to touch the darn thing; the story was written into a corner (literally inside a volcano).
So just for fun, and to remind people that it was still on-going, I teased that I'd do something crazy. More as a threat to egg someone else into picking it up. I had some notion to make it an over-the-top fever dream sequence that would somehow get the story on track again. Good thing I didn't because the ending barely worked the way that it did.

So anyways, the floating Crocodile was named "Luxurious" and he was the naked guy's Psycho-pomp (greek mythological guide to the afterlife). Crocodile was picked from a list of animals that /rpgmg/ posted. My idea was that Dahl, the naked guy, died in the volcano and the next thing he knows he's coming out of a giant oven, naked, in limbo, playing out a twisted children's book story of "The Gingerbread man". The other characters from the game would be dressed as farm animals who wanted to eat him. Sexual innuendos, ahoy! Dahl keeps feeding the candy ingredients that would have been his clothes to Luxurious, who gets bigger and bigger, until they reach the river Styx that they're suppose to cross into the afterlife. But like the story of the gingerbread man, Dahl doesn't make it across because Lux eats him and he is resurrected instead. Presumably out of the volcano and into some body of water that would have lead into a "water" story arc. Or wind I suppose. Earth and Fire was touched on already.
Naturally, all of that would have required a lot of art, and the rules of the collab only allowed 2 weeks. And I was trying to plug-in some actually character development to explain Dahl's motives up to that point and his wife which was introduced in an earlier chapter but nobody had gone anywhere with it - and that's the really hard part.
It seems so clear to me now 5-8 months after the fact. But at the time, I was still trying to explain everything. There was a farmer-in-the-"Dahl" joke in there somewhere. And Gingerbread man > ginger > no soul > disembodied soul, I don't know.

Anyways, nobody touched the collab until December. So it went from the volcano straight to the final level. So it came out less than ideal, but it's all we can ask for considering the previous collab that went on for 2 or 3 years was never finished.
