also just got back from watching scott pilgrim vs. the world
HOLY BAJEEEEEEEEEEESUS
it's probably the geekiest movie i've ever seen but it's geeky in such a GOOD WAY. i honestly can't think of anything bad to say about this movie, other than ramona isn't really that likable and it's weird that scott is doing so much for her.
but man. it's SO GOOD. you can tell it appeals to a very niche audience, but it just so happens i'm in the core of that audience, so of course i adore it. plus the fact that this movie is canadian as hell (with a lot of references you wouldn't get unless you lived around the gta) just compounds how much sheer, unadulterated, geek love i have for this movie.
michael cera does a fantastic job (as do all the other actors) and is probably the first movie where he hasn't been typecast as an awkward teenager. sure, he's still pretty awkward, but he's also incredibly badass and kicks some major butt. i was worried that he would be stuck playing the role of the awkward teen for the rest of his career but after seeing him in scott pilgrim i can easily imagine him playing some really varied and interesting roles.
the music is solid throughout with some really rockin' tunes playing during the fights. the sound effects contain a lot of hidden references (the moment i heard the zelda music, i knew i would love this movie) and the seinfeld music caught me completely offguard, which made it so much better. i was worried the special effects would be overdone but they're spaced out very well and done with a lot of effectiveness in the fight scenes.
i remember hearing someone say this is edgar wright's love letter to this generation, and after seeing this movie it's easy to see why. hot fuzz and shaun of the dead are two of my favourite comedies, and with this flick edgar is now easily one of my favourite directors.
it's really too bad, because the film is going to do terrible at the box office and might not even make back half its budget. i can see why this movie doesn't enjoy widespread appeal, and why most people older than thirty years old would find this movie excessive/too fast paced/what have you. (although my dad loved it, and he's sixty one) it's incredibly disappointing to know that vampires suck is doing better at the box office than scott pilgrim, though
i want to watch this movie again RIGHT NOW. seriously. i can't even BEGIN to describe how perfect this movie is. it hit every single one of my "i love this film" nerves, and hit 'em hard. if you haven't watched this movie yet, watch it. if you have, WATCH IT AGAIN.
