Saw Valkyrie with Tom Cruise.
I liked it!
There wasn't really any magical realism or anything like in Inglorious Bastards, it was all realism with some fictitious skews.
I mean they actually followed the legit timeline of the events of the July 20 Plot with some more "Interesting" skews to make it more palatable to the general audience, but the amount that seemed real actually made me go "no shit?" and look it up.
That whole plot IRL was actually fucking intensely insane, and I'm surprised it got so far as it did only to fail.
One thing that threw me off was that everyone had a British? ('?' because sometimes they were murky and indiscernible but were trying to be accents) accent. Except for:
- Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg - (Tom Cruise) - Had an American accent. I've never heard him have an accent in anything so I guess he just REALLY didn't think he could fake german.
- Adolph Hitler - (David Bamber) - Had a German accent. This one is obvious but why was he and several other mostly nameless/unimportant characters portraying the German accent?
I can dig wanting to do this movie, a movie entirely about Germans speaking German, in English--after all, that's the main audience. But just either pick -no accent- or German accent. I had the hardest time placing where they were at first because, despite the fact that they were all German dissenters, they sounded British and American (and even a little Scottish or French!) (Though French was more acceptable, considering they were occupied). Very strange.
Good movie though, minor qualms aside. A lot of powerful suspense and build-up scenes. Sometimes a little hard to follow, but great if you know some about the actual events of the failed July 20 Plot. I recommend reading a little about it beforehand.
