The last film you saw

so I watched Whisper of the Heart last night. it's a lesser-known Ghibli film made in 1995, directed by Yoshifumi Kondō.(who, sadly, died in 1998)

it's basically a slice-of-life story set in a suburb of Tokyo, telling the story of a girl named Shizuku and the people involved in her life. it's sort of like Grave of the Fireflies in that it tells a much more realistic, down to earth story rather than other Ghibli films that are mythical and bigger than life. but it's an incredibly charming movie! Kondō manages to tell an interesting story and weave in some of imo Ghibli's best characters. it's really too bad Kondō passed away - he was supposed to become the successor of Ghibli after Miyazaki was finished, and I would have loved to see more movies from him.

i watched the movie with subs - idk what the dub is like but it's perfectly watchable with subtitles.

I saw The Switch at the Drive In... was really wanting to see The Expendables but I got a mad stomach ache from eating too many containers of fries, so I left before The Expendables even started.

It wasn't the greatest movie, however it did make me want to have chirren even more than I already do.

You guize have any movie recommendations for me?

The last movie I saw was Silence of the Lambs, which I actually had not seen before. Brilliant film.

Now you need to watch Hannibal and Red Dragon because y'know, they're an amazing set of films. There's a prequel to Silence of the Lambs called Manhunter, and a sequel to Red Dragon called Hannibal Rising, but I don't like those two since Anthony Hopkins doesn't play Hannibal, lol.

none of them come even close to SotL in quality of cinema imo ... but the end to Hannibal is admittedly one of my more favorite movie endings ever

I bought Let the Right One in a couple weeks ago, but haven't had time to watch it yet, and now I'm sad because they made a American-ized version that will probably ruin it called Let Me In.

continuing my studio ghibli spree, i watched the cat returns on the weekend for the first time.

it's a strange movie, to say the least! the history behind the film is that in whisper of the heart, made in 1995, there's a figurine of a cat that appears several times. the figurine ended up being so popular in japan that they made an entire movie based around it in 2002 - the cat returns.

it's a lot more GENERIC ANIME than ghibli's other films, i think - but it's generic anime in a GOOD way. none of the more anime-ish elements are too blown out of proportion or feel forced. i usually feel repulsed by typical anime but it's done very well in the cat returns so i didn't mind it at all.

the animation is incredibly gorgeous, but i didn't expect any less from ghibli. it has the privilege of being made more recently than most of ghibli's other films so it has a quality and clean look no other ghibli film has had before spirited away was made, imo.

it's not a very serious film, very much unlike whisper of the heart. it's light, fun, entertaining, and doesn't try to be anything more than that. it's funny, it's adventurous, and it's fully aware of how silly it is, so it fully embraces it - which is why it's so good. it definitely doesn't live up to the calibre of other ghibli films like the aforementioned spirited away, princess mononoke, or whisper of the heart, but regardless it's still a great movie.

Wanted, I really liked this movie..
The humour in small things is really nice (like when he hits that guy with a keyboard and the buttons come loose and form the words "fuck you").

and the bending bullets things is really cool.
