continuing my studio ghibli spree, i watched the cat returns on the weekend for the first time.
it's a strange movie, to say the least! the history behind the film is that in whisper of the heart, made in 1995, there's a figurine of a cat that appears several times. the figurine ended up being so popular in japan that they made an entire movie based around it in 2002 - the cat returns.
it's a lot more GENERIC ANIME than ghibli's other films, i think - but it's generic anime in a GOOD way. none of the more anime-ish elements are too blown out of proportion or feel forced. i usually feel repulsed by typical anime but it's done very well in the cat returns so i didn't mind it at all.
the animation is incredibly gorgeous, but i didn't expect any less from ghibli. it has the privilege of being made more recently than most of ghibli's other films so it has a quality and clean look no other ghibli film has had before spirited away was made, imo.
it's not a very serious film, very much unlike whisper of the heart. it's light, fun, entertaining, and doesn't try to be anything more than that. it's funny, it's adventurous, and it's fully aware of how silly it is, so it fully embraces it - which is why it's so good. it definitely doesn't live up to the calibre of other ghibli films like the aforementioned spirited away, princess mononoke, or whisper of the heart, but regardless it's still a great movie.
