I just watched this animated 80's film called Heavy Metal, it's a collection of scifi short stories from the magazine of the same name. I can just see the influence this movie had. One of the first stories is about a cab driver in a futuristic New York who gets caught up helping this red head girl in white escape the men that are after her. I couldn't help but think how similar it is to The Fifth Element, even though it was made over 10 years apart.
aw man heavy metal is a fuckin classic. i actually deconstructed some parts of it in my History of Animation class as a project. it's really shown its age when compared to shit today but that was this iconic film that really fostered the "cartoons arent only for kids" mentality back into western society.
in case you look into it for a sequel, heavy metal 2000 isn't made by the same people or anything. it tries to be a sequel to the parts of the story involving the busty dark haired chick. it's entertaining but isn't anywhere on the same level of creativity or acclaim of the original.
wow idk what to say about the movie. i liked it but it is hard to describe. There was the typical tarantino staples: mexican standoffs, magical realism, long talkies, hot and very cool customer bitches, etc. Which I like a lot.
But it was layered by so much non-action, with these incredibly violent staccato bursts of action, --the pacing felt incredibly strange and off-putting. You keep anticipating action but the inaction drones on. And then, all of a sudden, there's action, and the anticipation has already been spent.
it's hard to describe like i said but it was certainly interesting.
yeah the pacing was pretty bad. its safe to say its terrantinos WORST film to date, overall it really wasnt that great. imo brad pitt was a little over the top, and the plot was heavily thin. best part of the movie was christoph waltz's acting, shit was great
Tarantinos best film to be honest is Reservoir Dogs, either that or Pulp Fiction anyways, although I enjoyed Reservoir Dogs a whole lot more, and it's still in my top 10 favourite films ever...
Watched Star Trek again; forgot how good it was. Absolutely fantastic film in my opinion. Kirk was a better actor than Shatner ;x and spock and scotty were brilliantly cast.
I just finished watching The City of Ember. I remember hearing about it in 2008 but never got around to watching it, and I'm pretty sure most people didn't know it even existed because of crappy marketing. :/
I absolutely adored the book, and they did a fantastic job recreating it. The set and mood of the movie was top-notch; the design was just how I'd pictured it. The two main actors were weak in certain parts (there are a few lines that made me cringe) but overall they did a good job. Bill Murray also did a great job as the mayor, and for the most part the acting was decent.
The CGI was less than stellar (a few sequences look very dated, like the rock falling at the end and the river ride) and the GIANT FUCKING MOLE didn't make the movie any better. imo they didn't need the OMG GIANT MUTATING ANIMALS at all, the fact that the generator was almost dead and the mayor was corrupt was enough to make it seem like there was a crisis going on.
It was a better movie than I thought, and I actually really liked it. Not a classic but it definitely deserved more attention than it got. Too bad the marketing for the movie was almost nonexistent, it should've done so much better at the box office.
yeah i saw it too, but in some shitty quality, and i cant be assed to rewatch it, because i didnt find the story THAT interesting.
I watched crank 2 last night, which continued the story where crank left off.
for those of you unfamiliar with crank, its about the god of badass chev chelios (played by jason statham) finding himself in a funny condition at the beginning of the movie, which requires him to beat a lot of bad ass. This incidentally leads to more funny situations, and an epic finale.
The film overall was pretty much what i expected it to be; great atmosphere, good beat-em-up, even better oneliners. also there are some rare occasions where i really laughed my ass off.
for one, there is a shootout in a strip club, in which a stripper gets hit in the boobs, and they drain ;D
and the second is where some transsexual with some funny condition tries to karate-keep someone from getting away, but he suffers an attack and spasms away..
stuff like that.
i mean, the dude's on fire, and burns his face and stuff, but he keeps on laughing. now, no matter how much you are tripping, and how much electricity you have ran through your body.. that shit is just wrong.
city of ember, saw that recently too. it's a very good kid's movie. not too pandering, with a lot of imagination and some interesting lore. The story was simple as balls and the protagonists and antagonists made a lot of "lol movie decisions" ... but the environments, costumes, and colors were spectacular. i wouldn't say it's anything special outside of that though.
Just saw Angels and demons, i found this movie interesting because of all the symbols and secrets Christianity has. It's a real source of inspiration (though I'm atheist). Yesterday i saw pulp fiction again, stays a classic.
I just went to see Avatar, and frankly it lived up to all the hype. I was very skeptical about it but it turned out to be a really good film in my opinion and I'm looking forward to Avatar II. I thought the characters were well developed, the switch between CGI and norm done so fluently that I had myself thinking "was that bit computer generated?", and the acting outstanding too.

I LOVE the Crank films, they're just great, and Jason Statham is another great british actor
When the credits end on Crank 2, it shows you them finding Chev and putting his heart back in... which may mean we get to see a Crank 3!
The last film I saw was last night as I was going to sleep, Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
To be honest, the Pirates films are three of the best films I've ever seen, and are in my top 10, although I'm a little skeptical about the new one they're apparently making, since it's not the same director, and only two of the main characters are making a return... the last 2 minutes of At Worlds End should have been cut off and it would've been a great ending to a trilogy ...

The first one was actually a very good film. I just don't know what the hell they were thinking with the second. It had no plot, no good acting, droned on for hours, and was essentially for the second half just a "here's what's coming in the next film".
They should have left him dead at the end then they could have ended the franchise there and then and we'd all have been happy sods
