I loved that game ^_^
It was always so cheerful =P
Oh, I don't know if it was all that cheerful, really. You're in a world where your social status is determined by how many animals you beat to a bloody pulp by using your own pets to achieve that goal. You are rewarded for abusing your animals with badges and the recognition of your peers. Over the course of your adventures, your companions will consistently be poisoned, burned, electrocuted, and knocked out just so you can achieve your self-aggrandizing mission. From a Kantian perspective, this demotes you to the lowest level of humanity considering you utilize seemingly sentient creatures as a means to your selfish ends. Unless you have a sadistic streak that lets you take pleasure in the suffering of creatures to whom you've forced submission, I don't see how it's cheerful at all. We should all be thankful the world of Pokemon does not exist in our plane of existence. Could you just imagine how groups such as PETA or the Animal Liberation Front would respond? I don't see Pokemon as a cheerful game. No, no. I see it as a scathing criticism of humanity's incessant need to glorify itself as the best species through torture and competition.
I am, of course, joking.

On the debate of Zelda and whether it's an RPG. Zelda is a platformer /action-adventure game. It's not an RPG being as it does fail to achieve many of the aspects of the RPG genre. That said, I don't think it's worth getting in a huff over people making that mistake. It's a game, a means of entertainment. Arguing about the semantics seems silly to me.
Oh, and I'm happy to see another person that began with Dragon Warrior among the group. Woo, DQ!
