The First RPG You Played

Mine..totally Pokemon Blue ^_^

I loved that game ^_^

It was always so cheerful =P

Oh, I don't know if it was all that cheerful, really. You're in a world where your social status is determined by how many animals you beat to a bloody pulp by using your own pets to achieve that goal. You are rewarded for abusing your animals with badges and the recognition of your peers. Over the course of your adventures, your companions will consistently be poisoned, burned, electrocuted, and knocked out just so you can achieve your self-aggrandizing mission. From a Kantian perspective, this demotes you to the lowest level of humanity considering you utilize seemingly sentient creatures as a means to your selfish ends. Unless you have a sadistic streak that lets you take pleasure in the suffering of creatures to whom you've forced submission, I don't see how it's cheerful at all. We should all be thankful the world of Pokemon does not exist in our plane of existence. Could you just imagine how groups such as PETA or the Animal Liberation Front would respond? I don't see Pokemon as a cheerful game. No, no. I see it as a scathing criticism of humanity's incessant need to glorify itself as the best species through torture and competition.

I am, of course, joking.

On the debate of Zelda and whether it's an RPG. Zelda is a platformer /action-adventure game. It's not an RPG being as it does fail to achieve many of the aspects of the RPG genre. That said, I don't think it's worth getting in a huff over people making that mistake. It's a game, a means of entertainment. Arguing about the semantics seems silly to me.

Oh, and I'm happy to see another person that began with Dragon Warrior among the group. Woo, DQ!

What does RPG stand for? Role-playing game. Super Mario Bros. for NES is therefore an RPG because you are, in fact, playing the role of a plumber trying to find a princess to plumb.

What I find interesting is that just about every game nowadays incorporates some kind of character-building abilities, thereby diminishing the line between RPG and every other genre. Just look at Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas or Dead Space for PS3.

There are turn-based RPG's and there are non-turn-based RPG's, but both are RPG's.

Chess is fun, but so is paintball. They both require strategy and can both be fun. If anything, I'd personally say that Zelda is a step up from the archaic turn-based systems. But then, Chess is fun sometimes and has its place, too.

So what is the question for this forum? What was the first TRADITIONAL, TURN-BASED RPG you played?

First: Earthbound or Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. MAYBE Eye of the Beholder for SNES.
Best: NOT Mystic Quest. I Love Super Mario RPG.
Haven't played: Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger.

By your definition nearly every game is an rpg. go back and reread my last post. What makes a genre is much more than a one-line definition. There are the types of challenges involved, the way the game works and handles things, and the very rules that govern the game (i.e. the core mechanics). Super Mario Bros is not an RPG.

I know people are gonna hate me for saying this, but VII wasn't that good. The music was horrible except for a few songs and spammed brass, the graphics were bad even for the time, the writing was terrible and poorly translated, the story was cliched and so convoluted the game had to constantly recap every half hour and you could still have no idea what the fuck was going on, and the battles were too frequent. This is a game that definitely has not aged very well.

The First RPG Game I ever played was Dragoon warrior it really is bas and the battle system is bad, it's like statues of monsters in a carnival that where you'll pay so that you can shot em with 3 balls, I mean wuthahek, my first RPG was a disgrace!!! it needs constructive criticism!!!... buuut... the intro animations were perferct, not that even I can do it!!! ^^

I know nobody asked for a second RPG I've played, but it was Vanguard Bandits, and was awesome! the coolest tactical game in the playstation I has ever played!!! ^^

it did things very well up until you leave midgar, at which point just about everything starts to slide. by the end of the second disk it's hardly playable.

pretty much all of midgar, though, was very good.

I could agree on that. The only reason I love FF7 to this day is cause of the memories I had from when i first popped it in, and when I had the first battle (which I adapted to easily, don't know why people thought it was weird.), and the length it took me to play it( 1 year, while all my relatives still cant beat it). I used to think the storyline was DEEEP...but when i playback again...eh, wasn't so unpredictable, except maybe the part when the Shinra Building is massacred.

final fantasy 7 was the first rpg game i played and by far in my books the best final fantasy game ever, till final fantasy X to X-2 came out

Final Fantasy V would be my first, soon followed by Pokemon Red and Blue and then Chrono Trigger.

Oh what good times!

FFV still remains as one of my more favored games of the series, simply for the enjoyable class/job system.

Pokemon Red on Gameboy Original, can't remember when, I cherished that game :D
The first one I got properly into would've been FF9 though.

I got my first gaming system, an SNES, for Christmas one year along with four games: Earthbound, FF: Mystic Quest, The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past, and Super Mario Bros. I loved 'em all, but Earthbound was the first one I broke out and it had me completely, hopelessly, inescapably enthralled.

Well, first (for me) GOOD RPG, I played was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, it was the time, when I start play RPGs all the time, and fuck on FPS and other brain-washing games.
First was Diablo, but it didn't impress me.
And globally, well, I'm not sure, bu I think, it was Mario on Snes (It was some kind of RPG :D )

I've never thought of the Zelda series as an rpg before. But link's awakening for the original gameboy was probably my first. After that it would have been FF8. I played my friend's demo and afterward I saved up my money for a year so I could buy myself a PlayStation. Then I had to wait a week after I bought the game because I was on vacation.
