The First RPG You Played

Probably "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" was my first RPG. However seeing as I know a lot of people don't consider Zelda as an RPG, I'm probably going to have to go with "Illusion of Time/Gaia" on this one.

It's not that we don't "consider" it an rpg, it isn't. Please look through my posts on the previous page for the reasons why zelda is not an rpg.

You play in the ROLE of someone, you take hits based on a mathematical calculation. You have a magic meter based on a similar equation, you meet NPCs and go on a quest. But we can discuss this in another thread at another time.

By that definition almost any game is an RPG. Since you cannot be bothered to go back one page to check my reasoning, I will post it again.

People are rude and childish if you wanna post Zelda as a rpg go for it.
In zelda nes, snes you have a old school rpg view. You health is a stat an it does increase and the definition of a rpg includes playing the role and you do by naming link and there is even a high detailed storyline like final fantasy. You also have small side quest and collect items. I would say atk stat goes up to but most games have that but the rest go perfect with what a rpg is. They call Mario a platform game but it too is adventure they shouldn't have to state the obvious for you to know. Zelda can be seen as a action adventure and a rpg its fits both. You don't have to see the words level up to increase stats.

Zelda is not an RPG, it is an Action-Adventure.
Oh, but Zelda IS an rpg. What makes it not? You go around, talking to people, trying to find out how to go to the next dungeon, adventure throughout the world to find it, solve puzzles, collect items used to unlock more areas, and experience a crappy storyline. It's probably even more-so of an rpg than even Secret of mana, and helped set the standard of an over-head rpg.

Anyways, so that I won't be derailing the topic:
I'll be adding onto that "You've fallen straight into my trap" none sense. If a villain is a true master-mind, they wouldn't draw you so close to beating them. As said before, we need more final bosses that aren't necessarily "bad guys", but rather being forced to fight for some reason of the plot. This is partly why Masked Man was such an awesome final boss in mother 3. Not because of what he is (Well, maybe partly) but because of the situation you're faced with.

EH? GTA is not an RPG by any stretch of the imagination.

Um... Are you sure you know what RPG stands for? A Role Playing Game is (wait for it) a game where you play the role of a character  So I was referring to RPGs like GTA and God of War that have ridiculous Side Quests

By your definition, nearly every game is an rpg. God of War and GTA are not rpgs, they are action games.

A role-playing game is one in which the player controls one or more characters, typically designed by the player, and guides them through a series of quests managed by the computer. Victory consists of completing these quests. Character growth in power and abilities is a key feature of the genre. Typical challenges include tactical combat, logistics, economic growth, exploration, and puzzle solving. Physical coordination challenges are rare except in RPG-action hybrids.

By this definition, God of War, (and maybe GTA), can only be considered an RPG if you stretch the definition a lot. Now I have never played GTA, so I don't know how it handles increases of abilities, but God of War only resembles an RPG in that you can choose which abilities to upgrade first.

The Legend of Zelda does not include character growth in power and abilities. the only "growth" actually taken by the character (i.e. Link) is more heart containers. All other "growth" in power and abilities is done through the use of items and various equipment. Link has no stats of his own, nor do they ever "grow" on their own. Furthermore, another passage from the same book states that:

An action game is one in which the majority of challenges presented are tests of the player's skills. Puzzle-solving, tactical conflict, and exploration challenges are often present.

As you can see, Zelda fits perfectly with this description. Not to mention, Zelda also contains many of the core mechanics of an action/action-adventure game, but is missing several from the rpg genre.

Don't try to argue with someone majoring in the topic, bud. You will lose every time. Also, platformers are a subset of the action genre.

There wasn't any need to say "Don't try to argue with someone majoring in the topic, bud. You will lose every time." in big bolded letters, was there? Arbiter~

Darkfire I said it before, this isn't an "Is Zelda an RPG?" Thread it's a "The First RPG You Played" if you wanna get hang up in semantics we'll start a different thread okay? Just leave it be.

Anyway, I think I need to add Breath of Fire II to the list of first RPGs I played, to be honest I cant' remember what game I played first Breath of Fire II or Illusion of Gaia/Time. I do know I played Link to the Past before any of them though.

darkfire, if you're gonna argue about this, at least drop the bullshit and the quintessential internetperson "don't bother arguin with a playa.... you gon get played" attitude.

why do you even care so much in the first place? I mean objecting once or twice I can see, but grrrr raging and condescending all over some guy? just enjoy the thread, bro~~~

if you really wanna start a shitfit about it, make another thread.

secret of mana was the first rpg i really got into, but if you really wanna get technical the first rpg i ever played was dragon warrior 1 or 2 cant remember, i was like 7 or 8 at the time. i still have my NES and it still works. i love how every NES has its own special technique to get to work. mine is blow out cart, slide almost in, snap it down, turn it on, screen flashes between glitched/silent and normal/sound, every 2 seconds or so, then you hold down the reset switch, and hit the fucker as hard as you can right on top in the center of the console, and release the reset switch exactly when you make contact, smooth sailing. my buddy gave me his old one, still cant get the damn thing to work. his requires too much finesse i suppose

Quest64 for the N64 was the first RPG game I ever played. I remember staying up for days with no sleep playing it (I still got it BTW). What I liked about the game is how the elements looked, the battle music, and the really long walks. There's a blue cave level that's about six miles long. The only flaw in Quest64 is when need to save your data, and you're lost in a big cave. It's very long game. My favorite wind element attack is "Wind Cutter lvl 3." You can hit one target with a 13 hit combo, or scatter shot and hit everyone.

Chrono Trigger, on emulator.

I'm not gonna lie and pretend to be "old school", cause I'm not, when it comes to RPG's. Being born in '90, it took me a while to understand videogames at all. I don't even remember what age I was, all I know is that I had a NES, a Sega MegaDrive, and a Atari Jaguar when I was a kid. And none of them had any RPG's. It was all about Super Mario Bros, Kirby's Adventure, Duck Hunt, Marvel Land, some wacky race games, Wolfenstein 3D, and some other stuff. Don't remember it all too well, it seems so long ago. When I was around 12, I began to learn about emulators and roms, and tried out some RPG's, starting with CT. It was pretty awesome, even though my english was still very bad back then.
