The First RPG You Played

Dungeons and Dragons, at the age of 8 :shades:

hmmm...

the first RPG I played was technically Pokemon blue, but only for like 15 minutes. At the time my parents didn't allow me to buy video games, so I spent a decent time of my childhood lusting after Pokemon games. After that, I ended up convincing my parents and bought a ps2. I bought kingdom hearts, which is considered an RPG I guess, but I don't really count it because it wasn't turn-based. kingdom hearts colored my entire perception of RPGs, so when I finally bought FF10 and FF12, I was surprised. I didn't really like them, and they just gathered dust on the shelf (still haven't finished them  ). Then I bought Pokemon LeafGreen, but by then RPG =/= pokemon, so that didn't count either. Now, 7 years from when I first played Pokemon Blue, I bought Chrono Trigger. I've almost beaten it, and I think it is the bee's knees. I consider THAT to be my first actual RPG-that-wasn't-ill-perceived-due-to-past-experiences-that-actually-is-an-RPG-that-is-also-a-video-game.

Energy, didn't we discuss what RPG means on IRC? Because you just failed the test. Your first RPG was Pokemon Blue, because no matter what YOU think of it, it's still an RPG. Also being turn-based is not a requirement of an RPG at all.

Sorry for the rant...my first RPG was Illusion of Gaia.

Final Fantasy VII...

My friends were into it so I went with the flow. Ended up with 7, 8 and 9; favourite is 8, never played 9 as my sister's ex stole the third disc.

my first RPG played was japanese final fantasy 1, I didn't get it at ALL, first it was in japanese, there was too much text on it (compared to non rpg games) and I didn't get battles at all, I just clicked ramdom buttons then the heroes would attack by themselves, on top of all that the save feature was disabled so I had to restart from the beginning each time. you understand it really wasn't much fun.

Awesome Bro

The first RPG I ever played, well when I was like 6, my brothers friend gave me a present, it was a set of 5 Flopp Discs, which had Final Fantasy I - IV, Chrono Trigger, LoZ: Links Awakening + Ocarina of Seasons, and Pokémon Red + Blue,

Ofcourse I played them like mad, whenever I came home I'd be like "Oooh, now I play this one and be this guy with red hair and a frog friend =D", and when I was talking about it at school, no one had a clue what I was talking about, but they were the best presents I've ever had ! (Literally !)

My exposure to RPGs came when I was really young. My first was Dragon Warrior I.

Ah... nothing compares to that beauty, even today. And to all other fans out there, recall the glory of that sacred line, "But you must!"

Other RPGs that I played when really young were Final Fantasy II SNES, Pokemon (Red), Final Fantasy Legends I and II as well as Adventure and the rest is history. (Meaning I've played a lot more of them since then.)

Everyone started with these cool games and yet I didn't even get a games console until 2000. :|

It's somewhat hard to imagine to me, but were games such as Final Fantasy I and whatnot raved about as much as say Final Fantasy XII is today? (Look at the awesome newage 8-bit graphics!)

As much as XII? Easily, and I'd say some of the hype more than surpassed it. FFVII got a lot of hype. As did Dragon Warrior. Indeed, in Japan it is law that Enix could not release a Dragon Quest game on a school/work day because nobody will show up that day anyway. This was established after Dragon Quest III was released and millions called in sick that day.

The first RPG I've ever played is Pokemon Crystal. I really loved that game, yeah good times......

I hope they bring out that remake for the DS! I am so getting that!

My first RPG.... Well, my aunt and her family lived with me when I was a little kid for a couple years (money issues?) and she was into Final Fantasy. So prior to this, I had been playing Crash Bandicoot.

Final Fantasy VII was awesome. First RPG I played, sort of. I got to play about 10 minutes of it (about to the first boss) and Mom decided it was too violent for a seven year old.

The first RPG I actually owned was Beyond the Beyond.....but Final Fantasy VII was better.

Well i started with Zelda for nes and at the time it was a rpg. A great game indeed but my first leveling rpg was Final fantasy for normal game boy. If you played or know Sword of Mana for gba it's the same game but with upped gameplay and you can play as a girl. Storyline 90% the same, people, and event's are the same. Great game any who haven't played should it's like Zelda in gameplay but you level up.I My first rpg for PlayStation was Final fantasy7 back in 1997 before it became overrated but was true to the text on the back of the case "possibly one of the greatest games ever made".

FYI, Zelda was never an RPG. It was and has always been an action adventure game. Also, that was Final Fantasy Adventure in America; in Japan it was called Sieken Densetsu. Back then, almost every Square game was marketed as "Final Fantasy" in the US so it would sell. FFA was the first in the mana series and Secret of Mana for the SNES was the second. Sword of Mana for the GBA is a remake of FFA, and that is why they are pretty much the same.

haha... Zelda Majoras mask. And I beat it at 10 years old.

Thats nothing though...my little brother (freaking amazing kid when it comes to the zelda series) has beaten all of the zeldas since ocarina of time. (which is ocarina of time, majoras mask, wind waker, and twilight princess) and he turns 11 in july. The kid beat ocarina of time when he was 7, and could not read! its crazy... he watches me when I played and then could like... remember the whole thing. That is only for the first one though, twilight princess he beat by himself.

Please tell me you are just reminiscing, because I have already stated (several times in fact) that Zelda is not an RPG.

People are rude and childish if you wanna post Zelda as a rpg go for it.
In zelda nes, snes you have a old school rpg view. You health is a stat an it does increase and the definition of a rpg includes playing the role and you do by naming link and there is even a high detailed storyline like final fantasy. You also have small side quest and collect items. I would say atk stat goes up to but most games have that but the rest go perfect with what a rpg is. They call Mario a platform game but it too is adventure they shouldn't have to state the obvious for you to know. Zelda can be seen as a action adventure and a rpg its fits both. You don't have to see the words level up to increase stats.

Zelda is not an RPG, it is an Action-Adventure.
Oh, but Zelda IS an rpg. What makes it not? You go around, talking to people, trying to find out how to go to the next dungeon, adventure throughout the world to find it, solve puzzles, collect items used to unlock more areas, and experience a crappy storyline. It's probably even more-so of an rpg than even Secret of mana, and helped set the standard of an over-head rpg.

Anyways, so that I won't be derailing the topic:
I'll be adding onto that "You've fallen straight into my trap" none sense. If a villain is a true master-mind, they wouldn't draw you so close to beating them. As said before, we need more final bosses that aren't necessarily "bad guys", but rather being forced to fight for some reason of the plot. This is partly why Masked Man was such an awesome final boss in mother 3. Not because of what he is (Well, maybe partly) but because of the situation you're faced with.

EH? GTA is not an RPG by any stretch of the imagination.

Um... Are you sure you know what RPG stands for? A Role Playing Game is (wait for it) a game where you play the role of a character  So I was referring to RPGs like GTA and God of War that have ridiculous Side Quests

By your definition, nearly every game is an rpg. God of War and GTA are not rpgs, they are action games.

A role-playing game is one in which the player controls one or more characters, typically designed by the player, and guides them through a series of quests managed by the computer. Victory consists of completing these quests. Character growth in power and abilities is a key feature of the genre. Typical challenges include tactical combat, logistics, economic growth, exploration, and puzzle solving. Physical coordination challenges are rare except in RPG-action hybrids.

By this definition, God of War, (and maybe GTA), can only be considered an RPG if you stretch the definition a lot. Now I have never played GTA, so I don't know how it handles increases of abilities, but God of War only resembles an RPG in that you can choose which abilities to upgrade first.

The Legend of Zelda does not include character growth in power and abilities. the only "growth" actually taken by the character (i.e. Link) is more heart containers. All other "growth" in power and abilities is done through the use of items and various equipment. Link has no stats of his own, nor do they ever "grow" on their own. Furthermore, another passage from the same book states that:

An action game is one in which the majority of challenges presented are tests of the player's skills. Puzzle-solving, tactical conflict, and exploration challenges are often present.

As you can see, Zelda fits perfectly with this description. Not to mention, Zelda also contains many of the core mechanics of an action/action-adventure game, but is missing several from the rpg genre.

Don't try to argue with someone majoring in the topic, bud. You will lose every time. Also, platformers are a subset of the action genre.
