The First RPG You Played

cruelty, brave fencer musashi was like my 3rd rpg :O! (i got it on my 9th bday cause it looked badass *sunshades*) I absouletly loved it.

I actually made the jump from some old nes games cause I used to live with my grandma in the middle of fucking nowhere with like 4 nes cartriges, and one day she let me go shopping at the local Roses (that store has alot of old school shit but it kind of sucks) to get my playstation, which I only wanted for FF7 but instead I picked up musashi (and the first wild arms too, which was amazing) cause it looked much better.

My ma baught ff7 but she wouldnt let me play it at the time because square made the huge fucking jump to adult themes and she felt i wasnt mature enough yet to understand it, so I didnt play ff7 till a whole year after it launched :(

my first couple rpgs were actually the best, compared to those these days. the last recent released rpg i have played was like....golden sun? these days i just watch my friends play them; rpgs arent nearly the same as they used to be imo.

Ultima V? I can't even remember these old commodore 64 RPGs, but I know I played them. Or was that a bit later on an old PC? I'd recognize one of them if I saw the screenshots. Some of them I just couldn't get very far in as I was too young to really know what I was doing. I got fairly far in Ultima V, but never beat it. I'd eventually wander too far off and then lose a battle, get sent back at Level 1 with most of my companions gone. Stupid Lord British, stealing my EXP. Not that I really had a clue what I was supposed to be doing anyway.

Other than that, it'd have to be Final Fantasy 1 for the NES. I actually beat it back then, I don't have the patience to do that nowadays. Peninsula northeast of pravoka! This game is what inspired me to make Paradise Blue.

I have an odd nostalgic place in my heart for old style RPGs that I really don't have for other genres.

My memory is going I guess that's another sign that I'm too old.

I don't really remember. It was either FF6, or Shining Force or something. I had the Sega Channel, so I had a SHITLOAD of games I don't even remember the name to.

To be honest, the first thing I ever played that was even technically an RPG was Pokemon Blue version. The second was either Dragon Warrior I or (if you want to count it) Super Mario World III. The oldest RPG I've played (for the computer) was this weird text-based thing for the computer. I had the hardest time trying to get a bear out of my way. Finally, in a fit of exasperation, I typed in "shout" and it ran away. I couldn't decide whether I wanted to laugh or destroy my desktop. (BTW, I had an Atari for the longest time. That was fun. Unfortunately, my family decided to give it to some relatives, and it wouldn't work on any of the TVs we have now anyway. Actually, that had the oldest RPG I ever played for a non-computer. I can't remember what it was, except that is was obscenely easy once I got the hand of avoiding the random dragons that seemed to appear occasionally)

The first ever RPG I played was Phantasy Star II, which belonged to my neighbor. At the time, neither of us spoke english, and even though he had owned the game for a few years, he was still at the second dungeon. I tried it, liked it, but god, it was Phantasy Star, it's WAY too difficult for a 10 year old!

The next RPG I played was Lufia and the Fortress of Doom. I liked it too, but I still wasn't grasping the concept of RPGs yet. The game that really got me hooked was Chrono Trigger. By then's standards, it was like THE perfect game.

Hmmm let me think if im not right it could be dragon ball z the one with raditz and vegeta in the final battle. I was really unaware of RPG that time but i have seen others playing some kind of turn based battle with words in it(Final Fantasy 2 or 3 i think) and my first impression was heal yeah thats cool!.

Oh wow I was looking through mobygames and I finally found one of them that I was thinking of in the previous post.

Knights of Legend. No wonder I couldn't remember the title, you couldn't get any more generic than that. I was just playing it an hour ago to see how it is. Too icon based, but I think the battle system concept is fairly interesting. You can choose what type of attack, where to attack, what kind of defense, then you can move around like one space or use a command.

Yeah, this is not the first RPG I've played but I know it's a very early one.

Had to control-alt-delete out of that one because I didn't know how to quit out normally.

I forgot that Brave Fencer Musashi was an RPG! I always just likened it to an action game. But it's an Action-RPG I suppose!

Then technically, yeah, I played BFM before FFIX. That game kicked ass, man.

The long years that have passed fog my mind, but the first RPG I *remember* playing was a PC game called Star Command. I still play it now and then.

BoF 1 was my first Rpg ... and it was awsome, it had everything you wanted, revenge, destroying an evil empire, time travel, dream exploration and spying on a pixelated babe take a bath
The story is great, its simple and direct, go from point A to point C... and that was all you needed. In between you lived some adventures, like aiding the windia kingdom to defeat an evil sorcerer or solving the rivalry of two towns so that a couple could get married, all of it felt natural cuz you were just a guy wandering through and got involved in different conflicts... and had to solved them to keep going forward... sure this was all awsome and original cuz it was the first time I played through this(now) generic story... but what the heck this game was good enough to make me love the genre

I always saw Bof 1 Ryu more like a vagabond than a classic rpg hero... especiall cuz of his design(my favorite of all Ryu`s!)

A side of the main heroes there are a few characters that joined you, they probably said like five lines at most, but still, when they sacriface themself to save your party  ... Soldier1 and Soldier2 you will never be forgotten!

final fantasy II, on my dad's old snes. thing's stopped working so well now (mainly it forgets to show anything other than grayscale if you get the wires positioned wrong) but it still gives me hella nostalgia. I was like seven and pretty wimpy and so I had an arrangement with my dad that I would handle the towns and he would deal with all the battles. prolly just nostalgia but I still think it's prolly one of the best out there.

now super mario rpg was probably my second rpg ever and that was def up there, nostalgia or no. it was an rpg with gameplay, tell me that's not really something.

Yeah. It's a bit off topic, but my parents never bought me any game or game system. My mom in particular doesn't even like me playing games.

Final Fantasy IX was my first RPG. When I think about it, however, my mind tries to tell me that Legend of Legaia may have been before...but I don't think so. Besides being my first, FFIX, is my favorite game and RPG of all time.
