Great news! Congratulations Jason on becoming a homeowner. Mortgages aren't so confusing, at least not in the US. People who don't have jobs, who get subprime adjustable-rate loans, which then get bundled off into mortgage-backed securities, so that it's no longer clear who you can negotiate your rate with when things go wrong--that can get confusing, and it can become a problem. But if that's not you, then don't worry about it. Just make your payments every month and everything is fine.
I have heard some crazy people in the US shouting about how horrible home loans are. It's all rigged against the poor and whatever. Because you can use your mortgage interest to reduce your tax liability, it's just another way for rich people to avoid paying taxes, while poor people can't use their rent payments to reduce their taxes. It's a bunch of crazy communist talk that I won't disprove in detail here. It reminds me though of a crazy English woman I spoke to back in 2009. [Edit: Or was it 2011? I'm reading Wikipedia on various riots in London and now I'm not sure when it was.] She said that poor people rioting in London were completely justified in looting electronics and shoes and whatever. She said that the system oppresses them, and that by stealing those symbols of their oppression, they empower themselves and take back their rightful place in society. By rioting and stealing shoes.
Anyway, home-ownership is fantastic. I'm happy for you. Rioting and looting are bad. I feel bad for crazy people who think otherwise.
And congrats Xilef on your Android hacking.
