it was the online only version. and most multiplayer ones you can set your home as well.
the sad thing about minecraft is that you NEVER need to travel a great distance from your spawn point (unless of course you spawn on a huge beach, in which case just go in one direction until you find dirt/trees), you can immediately start mining right near your spawn point because its the same thing everywhere.. once you've seen one mountain, you've seen them all. there's no true incentive to actually go exploring atm.
also, but if you keep in the back of your mind what direction you went from the spawn point, your compass can still always help you back home.
