wyatt, it would be fine to use italics if you're reading a book since you aren't really addressing the reader(even in first person) in the way you'd reply to someone on a forum. a book uses more of it's DEVICES than it's use of BUILT-IN COMPUTER EMPHASIS(i.e bolding, underlining, italics). and in a book capitalization isn't professional(books are subjective, yes but they must have at least a CERTAIN LEVEL OF FORMALITY like no caps etc.)
on a forum it's much more ADDRESSING TOPIC/RELATED POST and caps are more of a personal way to address somebody, the context taken into account of course! seriously, i don't see how people think it's random or looks retarded!
