Fall of the Living: First Outbreak (Full Game Thread)

Ah, well because the numbers on the hud isnt showing how many bullets in the magazine out of how many are left. The numbers show how much ammo you have all together, out of how much ammo you can hold. After 30 rounds are shot, of course he reloads.
As for the gun design thats my fault.
It was originally planned as an AK47 in the game.
But later I decided to make it AK74 SMG.
Easy fix.

Well after about a year, I think the system is complete. Just need a few graphics here and there. Reloading animations for few more guns, and just a few more zombie death animations. Everything is going smooth. Today I added a few bug fixes and a new weapon.
http://i34.tinypic.com/m9a6io.png[/img]

P90 SMG.

Heres what I did today.
+P90 shooting coding
+P90 Damage and headshot chances
+M023 grenade launcher damage
+M203 shooting coding
+New Hud
+reloading animation for ak74
+glock 17 reload animation
+straf (lock face) button added
+AK74 damage increased

What is being finished today.
-p90 reload animation
-grenade launcher reload animation.
-add bolt action rifle shooting coding and graphics
-Melee weapons.

I guess ill release a public beta of the updated system sooner than i thought.

I really love your game, I guess. The screens are looking fantastic and  the shooting script seems to be awesome. I really dont know much about all those weapons, but I love Zombie movies, so I'll certainly play your game, when it comes out.
Keep up the good work!

The last few days i been working nonstop on the game adding and fixing things.
While alot of it was work on the actual engine, i worked on more graphics too.
I know you pretty much seen all their is to this map.

http://i33.tinypic.com/nf1mit.png[/img]
completed the coding for the m203 grenade launcher.
It is now fully funcional with no bugs.
Notice the fire selector switch is on G for grenade launcher.
While aiming if you press the ESC (or X key) you can select between single shot, 3 round burst, fully auto, and grenade launcher.
All I need is reload graphics for it.
You may also notice it says "Direction lock" in the lefthand corner.
You press the Z key to strafe/lockfacing. So you can stay aiming at your enemy and walk backwards and such.

http://i37.tinypic.com/wt7lfs.png[/img]
Added a bolt action rifle.
It is fully functional, graphics and coding.
The rifle has a high chance of headshot, and strong power.

http://i33.tinypic.com/23ichp5.png[/img]
AK74 is complete, graphics and coding. I know this screen is a little dark. It doesnt look like that in the game, the muzzle flash animation lights up the hero sprite, and it made it look weird on this picture.

http://i36.tinypic.com/2e6ho9c.png[/img]
Shotgun has been complete. But i upped the damage some.
The shotgun has spreadfire/buckshot. can shoot more than one enemy at a time.
I knwo the text for the weapon name is cut off, its a simple fix.

http://i38.tinypic.com/2v926ac.png[/img]
p90 is complete except for reload graphics.
Another case of muzzle flash weirdness capture.
The p90s damage is pretty average, but the rate of fire and size of magazine make up for it.

http://i35.tinypic.com/2vx3uc1.png[/img]
Just another capture of the AK74.
I know you cant see it, but I tried to make the weapons recoil look like the real AK in the game. Jerks back hard.

http://i34.tinypic.com/2rco7ba.png[/img]
Just an attempt of a new logo. I may change the name of the game to something more unique. The title name is pretty bland I admit.

I'll post some animated gifs of the character animation test soon.
I will also be working on my favorite weapon.
An RC car toy with meat on top of it. The zombies will follow the car to get the bloody meat.
You can lure them where you want and distract them while you pop a few heads, or run past them.
They will even follow it stupidly off buildings, into holes, and traps you can make.
I will also be working on the melee system starting with the baseball bat and gas operated chainsaw.

So I decided to record a movie of the weapons.
I have tried multiple screen recorders and they all gave me some sort of lag.
The game does not lag when you play it.
So I decided to slightly speed up the clip since the recorder was being a bastard.
So that is why the sound effect tempos are up higher than in game.
But thats ok, this movie is not about the SFX but the engine itself.

This looks incredible.  This could turn out to be the best game ever made with the program, as long as the rest of the game holds up (story, etc)

I WANNA TEST IT! it looks sick! ive looked at all the vids and the screenshots you have given and i agree with xephyr14, this will be the best ive seen if you keep up the EXELENT work!

Anyway an update on the game.
First of all as you all know i been perfecting the engine.
I decided to start workin on the story mode for the game.
I scrapped the whole into the future idea with the one ruler, and decided to make this one at the start of the outbreak.
It's the same game engine, same features plus new ones, but with a diffrent story.

I have written up a wordpad file with gameplay features that will be in, and explaining some things as well as the first part of the into. I know it looks like alot, but it would mean alot if you read it and let me know what you think about the new features and small intro part. You will also understand the screenshot even more.

Rise of the Dead
   First outbreak

The game no longer takes place where zombies completely rule the world, but the world is in deep trouble.
The game will now take place few weeks after the dead have first rose.
The first "safe haven" you start off in is an office building with the staircase destroyed with roof access.
The dead have been walking for about 5 weeks already.
You are in the building with a few other people, and you can save other people from outside to bring back to the building.
You can do diffrent missions for all the main characters,  then leads to you leaving the city (main storyline mission) once it gets too filled with zombies. Doing missions other than the main one will be rewarding, but its a risk you have to take.
You don't have to do missions the whole time however.
You could just leave the building on your own and go out and kill zombies and explore.
I want to game to have choices that will affect the way the story goes, but nothing too deep.

Quick ideas of areas I want to make.
All areas will be accessable by highway/freeway.
You will be able to either chose to drive on the highway yourself, or "quicktrip" once you have found that location.
Quicktrip will teleport you to your selected area. Not magiclly, what really happens is it skips the trip and makes it so one of the survivors drove.
I don't want hours of aimlessness, it will have signs of how to get where you are going.
You will also have a roadmap to look at.
However, driving yourself will sometimes let you find extra items and weapons.
Such as maybe you will run into a police car with a new gun inside it.
Or catch a new survivor that can help you.
Becareful, some will lie about being infected or simply not tell you. So keep a close on everyones behavior. (throw up blood, wounds or bitemarks)
If you don't keep an eye on them and you bring them back to your hideout, they could zombify and attack.
When someone gets infected, shoot them.
Not everyone will agree on your decision too though.
Keep in mind, you cant make everyone happy all the time. But it is good to keep your "trust/approval" stats up.

Type of areas wanted.
-Populated city-
-Miami type city-
-suburban town-
-small rural/country town-
-forest-
-snowy area-
-military bases- (more than one)
*all inhabited areas will have buildings you can enter. Be careful of people wanting to do harm however*

Rooms availble in the building.
-Fair sized Seminar Room
[The room is where everyone sleeps. Everyone has there own part of the room where they keep there belongings. Weapons are also kept here.
Radio, Tv's,and everything]
[You can place weapons in your storage bin and go to sleep on your blanket on the floor to refill your stanima]

-Break Room
[This is pretty much the kitchen and supplies room]
[You can eat food to refill your health. However food supply is limited. You will need to get more after it runs out]

-Roof
[Able to use the binnoculars, and you go up to the roof to start the next missions as well as snipe]
[Roof also has targets you can shoot/practice on like a shooting range.]
[Frank sits on the roof in a chair with his radio and his M16A1 (old vietnam vet), bottle of alcohol, and "wartime jornal" which you will see him
occasionally write in]

-Secuirty camera room
[No one really hangs out here. This has televisions that you can see the entrances for. Zombies can be seen banging on the front doors]
[Alarm will sound if a zombie breaks in too]
[Zombies will break in if you do not repair the barricades every once in a while. Even though they cant get upstairs, they will moan alot and disturb your sleep, making it harder to gain back stanima and occasionally wake you up]

- Indoor fire espace stairs with destroyed stairwell
[You can drop bricks and other heavy objects on zombies that got into the building and are waiting for you to get down, and throw grenades when you have them]

**Intro start: main hero narrarating(similar to RE4 begining with Leon talking)**

I never would have guessed I'd be around when the world ends.
It's November 16th 2012.
The dead have been walking the earth for over a 5 weeks now.
This new lifestyle is feeling more and more normal everyday.
I've ran into a few other people the last few weeks, and we cleared a place to stay for a while.
More of them are polluting the streets everyday.
Still no sign of any help to clean up this mess.
::The screen fades to black.

Kelsey: Johnny!

::The screen then fades in quick from black, and the main character is seen in bed.
As Kelsey says his name, he rushes his torso out of bed and aims his pistol really fast at Kelsey.

Kelsey: Hey!

::He then takes a a sigh of relief and puts his handgun down.

Johnny: I'm sorry, you suprised me.

Kelsey: Be more careful next time!

Johnny: Where is everyone?

Kelsey: They're on the roof mapping out locations.

Kelsey: Frank sent me to get you.

Kelsey: We're low on nearly everything and need to make a supply run.

Johnny: Alright, you can rest for now.

Johnny: I'll have James sit gaurd while we are out.

Kelsey: Thanks, Johnny.

::Kelsey walks over to the bed and you are free to play.

::This is the safe area.

quick character personality types (beggining characters)
Kelsey- female actress
James-noob/wimpy kid
Frank- old vietnam vet.
Arnold-the muscle (schwarzeneggar clone)
johnny-main hero

::In the safe haven, everyone you save will do random actions
Arnolds Actions: Smoke cigar on the roof, walk downstairs and clean his pistol . and occasionally walk into th break room to eat

* John walks up the staircase to the roof  and sees everyone huddled around drawing on the map and talking*

Johnny: Anything come through on the radio?

Frank: Nothing at all.

Frank: There was static on every station. I tried for 4 hours and still nothing.

Arnold: We don't need to worry about that now, we need to make a supply run.

James: I don't know you guys last time we almost didn't make it out alive.

Arnold: No, YOU didn't almost make it out alive.

Arnold: You need to be more careful when placing your shots.

James: Give me a break, guns scare me.

Arnold: That gun is what is going to keep you living.

*Arnold lights up cigar"

Arnold: You don't have to come with us this time.

Arnold: Me and Johnny will go alone.

Johnny: Just stay here and practice your shooting James.

James: Where exactly are you guys running off to?

Arnold: We need more weapons, food, medical supplies, clean clothing, gasoline, and cigars.

Frank: And if you run into any booze, be sure to bring me back some. Just as a little favor.

Arnold: *Laugh* Good Idea!

Arnold: Johnny, I'll let you choose what you want to pick up.

::A map with location and store names comes up.

Arnold: You can either go to the hospital for medical supplies,

Arnold: Or go to the gas station.

Arnold: Since the gas station is further away I'll let you use the jeep.

Arnold: But you have to remember to get my cigars...

Arnold: Oh and gas and food if there is any.

Frank: And alcohol.

::after you pick your selection.

Arnold: Okay, the keys to the jeep are next to the tv in the seminar room.

Arnold: We should get going. The sun is starting to rise.

Arnold: We will run into less rebels the earlier it is.

Ok onto the screenshot. This is in the break room of the office building/hideout. Food is stored here to refill health, and you will run into a survivor every once in a while in here eating while performing his "random actions" coding.

SOME GRAPHICS ARE PLACE HOLDERS, AND OTHERS ARE UN TEXTURED YET.
This is just a mock up of how the food system will work. And when you run out, you have to get more

Hi, just thought I'd pop by and say that Rising of the Dead is still looking really awesome. I just like to say one thing. Your new begining 'mission' and mission ideas are almost identical to the ones at the bigining of my zombie game. Also, your idea about the missions being free to do when and whenever you like is another one that I've been using. Damn, now our games have got even more in common! lol.

Anyway, good luck. I really hope to see this finished.

Hey thanks!
But freeplay and missions were always going to be part of the gameplay even before I wrote the first draft of the story it was the kind of game I wanted. and when I was working on "John of the Dead" I had alot of comments about people requesting freeplay so I just stuck with it. Oh and the missions will be similar to dead rising, not like GTA. I don't want you to think that I would take an idea because I don't really know much about your game :) but I seen some screenshots a while back and it looked good. Besides, we are doing the same type of game, its normal to have simularties for a zombie survival game.

Ok. Sorry, I didn't mean to acuse you, I was only saying.

The new screenshot: I'm asuming the food menu appears above the item the food is in? Otherwise, it seems a bit squashed up in that top corner. Also, I know you said some stuff is placholders, but those chairs are really out of perspective.

It's cool man.
Yeah the boxes in the left corner, when you walk close to it and press the action button, that menu will apear over the food boxes. I know the chairs are really fucked for now. Uusally I'll make a rough design of a map, then go in and add details. I'm planning to make the office room look like people actually live in it with as many details as I can.

Updated post:
Another Idea I had was the fridge is for special drinks.
Such as Energy drinks if you drink it it will raise your speed for a little while.
Drinks with alcohol will temporarily lower your chance of getting accurate shots, but in return will reduce the damage you recive from getting hurt and raise the damage that you do with melee attacks.
Water will restore a small amount of stanima.

Just a little update of what I have done lately.
http://i36.tinypic.com/2hehxfd.png[/img]
(I know his hand is missing from the grip underneath the forend)

http://i35.tinypic.com/28j9xya.png[/img]
+ Added Desert Eagle, as well as headshots with more powerful weapons will make the zombies head explode.

+Everytime you fire your weapon, random "shell dropping" soundeffects will play. Shotgun shells sound diffrent than the regular shellcase.

+Made pistols, bolt action rifle, and single shot on M4 semi auto (instead of having to just hold the button, you now have to tap the button to shoot. Some weapons shoot faster than others. Such as Deagle will shoot slower than the M92FS.)

Next update I will show you a video of the destructive power of the minigun.
