Welcome to HBGames, a leading amateur game development forum and Discord server. All are welcome, and amongst our ranks you will find experts in their field from all aspects of video game design and development.

What games are you currently playing?

I'm going through this thread for the first time I think...

I haven't played Nioh. I played the original Dark Souls because someone gifted it to me on Steam when it was $5. I would probably like it, but I would probably prefer to spend my videogame time playing something less punishing.

Civilization V is one of my favorite games. I'll probably pick it up again when I'm done with Himeko Sutori. For your nerdy pleasure, I recently read about a bug in the original Civilization. I had it happen to me all the time but didn't realize it was a bug. The aggression variable was supposed to go from 0 to 10, with Ghandi being a natural 1 or 2. Then late in the game Ghandi would go nuts and launch a surprise nuclear strike on you. It's because he adopted some government policy that dropped his aggression score to -1, which was an overflow that the game turned into 255 on a scale from 0 to 10.

And a quick, fun, easy card game to play with Grandma, if you get bored of that old stuff: Monopoly Deal.

And I laughed out loud when I read about SJWs going SSJ3. I had never heard that before. There was a reaction gif I saw somewhere... this isn't it...

Anyone seen the gif where Goku (I think) is going Super Saiyan (or Super Saiyan 3?) and he practically destroys that half of the planet he's on with an expanding sphere of energy?

Final Fantasy V, i'm in the N-Zone so almost done it! This year I'm gonna finally beat all the final fantasy games i haven't. well all the main line ones at least so that be Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy XV. I'm not really counting the MMOs because well you gotta pay lol... well to be fair i have beat vanilla Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn

I was playing 3D Dot Heros on my ps3. My save file was from 2013 and I had only cleared 2 dungeons.
So I beat the third dungeon. Then I messed around forever on the overworld opening chests and collecting heart pieces. Spent like 1h getting through the 4th dungeon. The game got stuck on a loading screen and I had to restart - and I was back at the third dungeon entrance.
So I just wasted an afternoon.

I'm doing the same thing. Playing through Dawn of Souls on the GBA at the moment (with my pimpin' awesome custom back-lit GBA) and then I'll be replaying IV, V, VI.

I didn't finish FFI because the final boss massively ramps up in difficulty. It's quite ridiculous (The AI is on a loop that involves a recover all HP, so if you can't beat him on the 2nd cycle - after powering up on the first cycle - then you mathematically have no chance at all...).

FFII is actually pretty good. It's way better than the first game (which is just fetch quests to open gates to dungeons).

FFV is still my favourite in the series. I'm looking forward to reaching that one and playing through it again. The GBA version is the best version in terms of graphics and gameplay. The original SFC version with the RPGe fan translation is the best version in terms of story and script. If you can read Japanese, then the GBA version is hands-down the best version.

I just beat Final Fantasy V. Have the gba version but im playing the ps1 version on my vita. Gonna to start VI tomorrow
The PS1 version of V is literally the worst version of the game. You have my sympathies.

While we're on the subject...

The only mainstream Final Fantasies I haven't beaten are III, V, and XIII. I've rarely touched III, and kind of have V, and got to the last dungeon of XIII.

Which versions of III and V are the best?

The Famicom version of III is decent, but really hard to get into. The 3D updated version is the only other version (exists on a load of platforms) is better in pretty much every way, but it's still difficult to get into especially if you've played the other games first.

I'd say that FFIII is the most difficult of the NES era games.

If you care about story for FFV (and you can't read Japanese), then you should play the Super Famicom version with the RPGe fan-translation. All the official English translations are shit (especially the Playstation translation! That one is fucking ARRFUL!).

The GBA and Mobile/Steam versions of FFV have a different English script (not as bad as the Playstation version, still fucking awful). Mobile/Steam version has really shitty graphics compared to the other versions.

If you don't care about story, then the GBA version is the best one in my opinion. Better graphics than the Mobile/Steam version, more features than the SFC version, better script than the PS1 version. Negatives is that it's still a crap script that turns the game's story into a complete joke and the screen resolution obviously isn't as good as the other versions.

My perfect English FFV would be the SFC RPGe version with the GBA additions, but alas that does not exist. I'm still considering modding the GBA version to use the RPGe script.

If you can read Japanese, then the GBA version is the best version. The original tone of FFV is that of an anime, so it's full of anime tropes and puns and gestures, but the official English translations have crapped all over that and squeezes away any sense of character depth or story seriousness. An absolute shame.

EDIT: Decided to quickly check the feasibility of re-translating the GBA version. I think I've managed to figure out the text format; http://pastebin.com/2hanXHC5 (Obviously spoilers all over)
If you want to see why I hate the GBA translation, do a search in that document for the words "pizza" and "christmas"...

Yeah but they messed with the font and UI and it looks pretty awful in comparison, that's one thing I don't like about the mobile/Steam versions of these games too (In this case it comes under mobile/PSP), the UI is simply horrendous.

Beat "3D Dot Game Heroes". I'm just happy I don't have to look at it on the shelf anymore and regret not finishing it. Yay, my backlog got smaller.

I'm on the last generation of Agarest War. So close, yet so far. I'm going to have to grind for another 5 hours probably to get past these boss fights.

I've been playing zelda: breath of the wild since it came out last week. I am definitely enjoying it; however it's a totally different experience from past zelda games and there are a few things I miss from previous zelda games such as full fledged dungeons and the gameplay loop of finding an item in a temple and then using it to solve puzzles. Instead you get all of your tools in the first few hours of the game. Also I wish there was more variety in enemies.

Minor gripes aside though it's great. I'm not sure if I would call it the most revolutionary game ever but it's awesome. Being able to tackle anything in any order and being able to climb pretty much anything is awesome. The weather kills me though. I swear it's raining like 50% of the time and you can't climb or make fire in the rain.

Actually I'm playing it on the switch. So far Ive barely encountered any frame rate issues but I notice it more when the console is docked.

I want to take a break from everything else and play video games. But I'm not really in the mood for anything, just because everything requires a huge time commitment.

I'm close to beating a couple Compile Heart games. But the difficultly shoots up at the end and I don't want to spend my free time level grinding or fight battles that'll last 20minutes or more.
I really should play Mass Effect while my Ps3 still works, but I'm going to have to start a new game because it's been a few years and I was only so many hours into it.

Don't want to play any steam games because I'm on my computer enough. Don't want to play my psp because I'm at home.

I don't know what I want.

my little sister gave me her ps2 and xbox 360 so I've been playing a bunch of old games I either loved or never beat. Right now I'm playing Grandia 2 (loved) and final fantasy 8 (never beat).
