yeah fl is a bit tricky at first dog, but you kinda get the scheme of the interface after a bit. it is a bit dead but its not bad! just keep working at it. what version of fl?

and yeah i think the general consensus is that Illitum's was the overall best  so i think he should be the winner of this theme. any objections?

Hey guys, sorry I've not posted recently, thank you moog for the comments :) I think that now we have a few more people joining we can up the game a little, so everybody really pull out the big guns for the next one.

I have been trying to design a portfolio website showcasing poems, literature, pictures and designs, now I can add a compositions section, yey :) I'll get the link up when it's relatively ready for even the index page to be viewed.

I have to rush to work now but will comment on all pieces later when I am on my lunch break.

Maybe we need a new thread for this. A fresh start, to make it some more official.. with rules, and templates.. and a day (e.g. sunday) from when to when the workshops are..

I'll also ask wyatt to feature every week's winner in the TWODO :3
I'll also make a sig thingy with "proud winner of this weeks music workshop", or something along those lines

Give me a banner width and height and I'll see what I can do for an eye catching banner, I can also make sub header pictures, this way we have something eye catching. Also, find out how the Admin put background music onto threads, maybe also having a piece of music playing in the background might make people stay to read the thread at least.

I would also suggest:
1) telling people that they are allowed to comment and give advice even if they are not entering.

2) People giving a little outline of the composition before they do it, then when posted, they also outline what they found worked for them, what they changed, and what they added or scrapped all together.
EG:

Pre-post: For my entry to the 'RAGE!' theme, I intend to use a heavy base drum with a distorted guitar, I plan to implement noises of glass breaking and screams.

Posting: Here is my piece [CLICK], I found that the breaking glass became lost within the piece and sounded more like a broken bell, I dropped this sound effect for a more effective explosion sound effect, I also lightened up the distortion on the guitar as the heavy distortion made the melody almost inaudible.

3) Is it possible for A channel or box.net account be made to store all of the compositions on a play list each week, that way a person doesn't have to click many different links, instead clicking one and just pressing next or allowing it to play the next piece one after another.

4) I would suggest (Only because I noticed samot do it) that all pieces on the new thread are reliant to the theme and not allowing posts of random pieces just thrown in there, I would suggest we have a sister thread for composition discussion for these random pieces, this could be set out similarly to the new thread with all pieces being posted in the first post and reposted as each edit is made.

5) instead of possibly deleting an older version of a composition and replacing it with a newer updated one, maybe having all versions of the same composition will help in showing people how we have progressed.

That is all I can think of for now.

EDIT:

6) I am not sure 'Proud winner of this weeks workshop' is apt for this, remember it is a workshop, not a contest or competition (a competition might make newcomers to music production a little scared to contend with the more experienced users) a 'Highly Commended' badge might work, or even a 'Weekly Best would work, I do also agree getting it mentioned in the weekly announcement would be a big bonus to the confidence of the 'winner' but also would serve to draw attention to the thread.

7) I also think we could decide themes in advance so people know when they are coming up, for example

This week-13 December 09
Theme: Romance
  • 2:00-4:00 long
  • Free Rein on instruments and feel

07 December 09 - 13 December 09
Theme: Your Theme song.
  • 2:00 long
  • Needs to include at least one word (Spoken, Whispered, Sung)
  • Try to sum up your personality into one single piece lasting only 2:00 in length.

14 December 09 - 20 December 09
Theme: Suspenseful Build up.
  • 1:30-2:00 long
  • Needs to include Violin, Guitar and Piano
  • The piece needs to build up to a dramatic event, the event doesn't happen within the composition but instead, the last second of the piece is where the event begins, your composition is leading up to this dramatic moment.

With this idea, people can see what future topics are, repair ideas for them etc, it also gives people an opportunity to submit ideas for each week in advance. This means that even if their idea isn't picked that week, it might be slotted in down the line :)

Each week the thread would be updated and the previous 'Current' Theme section would be replaced with something similar to the one in the new first post of this thread:

week 3: chiptunes
kurosawa: http://www.karasawa.trinitymugen.net/Victorian8bit.mp3
cruelty: http://bb.xieke.com/files/8bit%20something.mp3
gulch666: http://www.box.net/shared/atxf39hr1c
mega_man_aXe: http://www.box.net/shared/2cg7fzq1dj

So this way, previous weeks are turned grey with the entries below them, the current theme and week (and information about it) are highlighted and the future weeks are a pale blue / orange or something that shows that they are coming but not centre of focus.

For the new thread ideas i agree with Illitum for the most part, using words like winner and other of such ilk would make most people 2nd think about joining in or even attempting to do a bit for the workshop, the point of this is to help each other become better, thats not a stab at anyone btw, i know im awful at this but i find it fun so i give it a go, and thats how it should be :) as for the set up of the new forum i think the first post should be updated everytime something changes or the next theme is up

Post blah blah thread rules and such

Theme:- Current theme
Needs:- Current needs, lengh ect

Last theme most liked:- {name} [Link to song]

All Songs :- {name} [Link to song]
{name} [Link to song]
{name} [Link to song]

and so forth, also the idea of having people suggest a theme week(s) in advance is a intresting one, i think a blend of the current and proposed might work, so having a effective short list of say 4 themes for any given week and having people who intend to make a bit to vote with the themes previous well done or whatever it shall be called gets 2 votes for whatever theme they like but each time somthing dosnt get picked it gets a +1 for the next vote so that that theme that person A really wants to do but week after week everyone votes diffrently will get to do it sooner or later and perhaps a few rules such as the same theme cant be in the shortlist for more then 3 weeks at a time, then can be resubmitted (still with its + votes ect) There are just a few ideas,

but has anyone decided apon a new theme?

Illitum

Sponsor

Actually, the above idea on a vote would be a good idea.

Each week, people suggest a theme for two weeks in advance (obviously if the vote was for the next week then there would be less than a week to vote). With two weeks, you vote for the week following the next proposed theme. That way, each person can choose which themes they like. This means people will pick themes that they WANT to create pieces for.

EDIT:

I would like to put forward the 'Your Themesong' Theme :)

Anything reasonable (just not SUPER FUCKING LARGE) but thats fine, go for that, a banner sounds rad. The music background is through html if im not mistaken, ill look into doing that.

I would also suggest:
1) telling people that they are allowed to comment and give advice even if they are not entering.

2) People giving a little outline of the composition before they do it, then when posted, they also outline what they found worked for them, what they changed, and what they added or scrapped all together.

I was under the impression that they already did that? If not, then ill change that in the first post. Anyone and Everyone is allowed to comment and give feedback :D Doesnt matter on exp. either.

The outline was also supposed to be apart of the basis but I got a tad lazy and didnt follow through. This should be a standard and I completely agree.

Pre-post: For my entry to the 'RAGE!' theme, I intend to use a heavy base drum with a distorted guitar, I plan to implement noises of glass breaking and screams.

Posting: Here is my piece [CLICK], I found that the breaking glass became lost within the piece and sounded more like a broken bell, I dropped this sound effect for a more effective explosion sound effect, I also lightened up the distortion on the guitar as the heavy distortion made the melody almost inaudible.

this shouldnt be required, and im not going to make it manditory. if the poster wants to go into depth about the peice they are submitting for feeback reasons thats fine, but the point of this is rather to have a show and tell sort of thread, not an echo-ish sort. But, this is fine, and I dont mind it at all.

3) Is it possible for A channel or box.net account be made to store all of the compositions on a play list each week, that way a person doesn't have to click many different links, instead clicking one and just pressing next or allowing it to play the next piece one after another.

Yeah, I was thinking of putting up a lastfm account or something. Box.net never agrees with me and it loads a bit longer imo so id rather not use it, but any other hosting sites you want to recommend are fine. But I would like to do this def.

They arent supposed to be. Samot did that just cause, I dont think he intended for it to be just a DUMP, I think he wrote both pieces around the same time and just posted them both, which im fine with, but i wont really give feedback to it in this thread. Thats more of an irc thing to discuss.

In a week or so if this thread continues to get notoriety (thanks to you awesome dudes) im going to open up another thread for that kind of thing, but im kind of lenient b/c I dont want it to become a DUMP thread; this forum is know for that and im here to change it d:eek:

5) instead of possibly deleting an older version of a composition and replacing it with a newer updated one, maybe having all versions of the same composition will help in showing people how we have progressed.

ABSOLUTELY. I agree 100 percent, but then again, I didnt know the old musics were being replaced/deleted (if you guys are doing this, STOP IT)? This thread is about growth and depth and getting your composition skills beefed as well as chilling out and having fun with each other. Post your progress! Ex, Samot posted his wip and asked for advice and then posted another, which is good for comparing and contrasting the changes.

6) I am not sure 'Proud winner of this weeks workshop' is apt for this, remember it is a workshop, not a contest or competition (a competition might make newcomers to music production a little scared to contend with the more experienced users) a 'Highly Commended' badge might work, or even a 'Weekly Best would work, I do also agree getting it mentioned in the weekly announcement would be a big bonus to the confidence of the 'winner' but also would serve to draw attention to the thread.

when I said winner, I meant the best theme as agreed upon by the participants of the workshop, which was sort of a voting thing. Its supposed to always be like that. Id rather not have a huge LOL IM A SPECIAL BOY announcement. Putting it in the this week on .org, perhaps, as long as it isnt overhyped.

7) I also think we could decide themes in advance so people know when they are coming up, for example

Very bad idea. This thread is about creating on the spur of the moment, not giving initiative for composition. If this happens, this thread wont have as much pizazz because a participant might write the music for theme "a" way before hand and dump it. Thats another reason its weekly, so you dont have much time to write so you can pump out whatever you can. Its not for making symphonies or 10 min pieces, it should be a collection of short themes that can show your strengths and weaknesses in composition, and the feedback is in relation to that.

This is it exactly. You can be good or bad (not saying you are zeak!!) but as long as you have fun with it and want to get better this thread is for you. As for saying "winner", perhaps, I sort of agree with that, it does sound a bit pretentious. What about calling it the "Weekly Workshop Favorite" ?

again, i thought this was how it was supposed to be :( From now on, the general consensus of the favorite theme will be declared the one who picks the next theme.

As for this week, Im gonna go ahead and let Illitum pick the next theme, which will last till this Sunday, ok d:eek:

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Welcom to the Weekly Music Workshop. (WMW for short)
In this thread all you who would like to make music are at the right place!

wmwshi.png

Every week there's a theme. This theme will be pre-selected some time before the week starts,
by everyone who wants to participate. You can propose themes, vote on themes, or just go with
the ones others proposed. Based on that theme, you make a song. The theme will sometimes be
a guide in whatever instruments you can use, or what kind of atmosphere you have to capture.
Other people will give feedback on your song, so everyone can improve their composing.

wmwshr.png

- You can only post songs relevant to the theme
- Feedback has to be constructive

And of course all forum rules apply

wmwsct.png

This week`s theme is: THEME

Upcoming theme: UPCOMINGTHEME

Possible themes:
- Your own themesong
- theme2

I like the new set up there :) the centered text looks a bit iffy but everything is there :) great job you two, quick question, the 'Post Format' section, is that pre music or post music? also in the 'Theme' section im guessing inbetween the current theme and next theme is where the theme rules will be? (such as has to be within 2mins to 2.30 mins and only use gutair ect)

Illitum

Looking good, a few personal suggestions though:

1, leave a space under each banner, just one line, and then start the text, i would also justify it rather than centre it.

2,
Every week there's a theme.

My version:

Each week a new theme is selected. This theme will be chosen on the Sunday so that the forum has seven days to submit their piece. The piece of music needs to comply to the stated theme for that week. Check 'Current Theme' for information on the current one. Each theme may specify minimum and maximum length, instruments required and the mood or atmosphere you will be trying to create.

The purpose of the workshop is not to compete on who can make the best composition, use the best equipment or even show how much better you are than the other participants. Instead, this WORKSHOP is just as it say on the tin. Each piece is submitted and everybody comments on what they like, don't like and how the piece could be improved to better achieve the goal of the theme and in doing so improving not only their ability to compose but also their ability to improve and understand music and the programs being used to create it.

To suggest a theme, PM Either one of the two thread moderators or watchers (stated below). Please include the theme title and atmosphere, a few required instruments, possibly a minimum and maximum length.

Thread Moderators:
Atlet
Samot

Thread Watchers:
Illitum
Zeak

Does this help?

Also, I would suggest that the headings go in this order:

Intro
Rules
Previous
Current
Post format

This way people read what the thread is, read the rules, get an idea of what people have done (possibly spoiler the previous ones into headings), read the current theme, then read on how they should construct their post.

This looks fantastic guys, thanks for all of the work in revamping this thread!

So, has a new theme been decided? I updated the first page.

Zeak

Illitum has gone with the idea of "my themetune" so a 2 min little diddy of your own personalalty in usic ^-^

Illitum

Them: Suspenseful Build up.
The theme this week will be a suspenseful build up to a dramatic event. Though your piece will not portray the event itself, the last second of the piece must end with a bang. This one is to be 2:00 long or as close as possible with the second minute being the build up. Instruments to include, strings, Heavy orchestral drums, Piano.

How does this sound?
