Give me a banner width and height and I'll see what I can do for an eye catching banner, I can also make sub header pictures, this way we have something eye catching. Also, find out how the Admin put background music onto threads, maybe also having a piece of music playing in the background might make people stay to read the thread at least.
Anything reasonable (just not SUPER FUCKING LARGE) but thats fine, go for that, a banner sounds rad. The music background is through html if im not mistaken, ill look into doing that.
I would also suggest:
1) telling people that they are allowed to comment and give advice even if they are not entering.
2) People giving a little outline of the composition before they do it, then when posted, they also outline what they found worked for them, what they changed, and what they added or scrapped all together.
I was under the impression that they already did that? If not, then ill change that in the first post. Anyone and Everyone is allowed to comment and give feedback :D Doesnt matter on exp. either.
The outline was also supposed to be apart of the basis but I got a tad lazy and didnt follow through. This should be a standard and I completely agree.
Pre-post: For my entry to the 'RAGE!' theme, I intend to use a heavy base drum with a distorted guitar, I plan to implement noises of glass breaking and screams.
Posting: Here is my piece [CLICK], I found that the breaking glass became lost within the piece and sounded more like a broken bell, I dropped this sound effect for a more effective explosion sound effect, I also lightened up the distortion on the guitar as the heavy distortion made the melody almost inaudible.
this shouldnt be required, and im not going to make it manditory. if the poster wants to go into depth about the peice they are submitting for feeback reasons thats fine, but the point of this is rather to have a show and tell sort of thread, not an echo-ish sort. But, this is fine, and I dont mind it at all.
3) Is it possible for A channel or box.net account be made to store all of the compositions on a play list each week, that way a person doesn't have to click many different links, instead clicking one and just pressing next or allowing it to play the next piece one after another.
Yeah, I was thinking of putting up a lastfm account or something. Box.net never agrees with me and it loads a bit longer imo so id rather not use it, but any other hosting sites you want to recommend are fine. But I would like to do this def.
4) I would suggest (Only because I noticed samot do it) that all pieces on the new thread are reliant to the theme and not allowing posts of random pieces just thrown in there, I would suggest we have a sister thread for composition discussion for these random pieces, this could be set out similarly to the new thread with all pieces being posted in the first post and reposted as each edit is made.
They arent supposed to be. Samot did that just cause, I dont think he intended for it to be just a DUMP, I think he wrote both pieces around the same time and just posted them both, which im fine with, but i wont really give feedback to it in this thread. Thats more of an irc thing to discuss.
In a week or so if this thread continues to get notoriety (thanks to you awesome dudes) im going to open up another thread for that kind of thing, but im kind of lenient b/c I dont want it to become a DUMP thread; this forum is know for that and im here to change it d
5) instead of possibly deleting an older version of a composition and replacing it with a newer updated one, maybe having all versions of the same composition will help in showing people how we have progressed.
ABSOLUTELY. I agree 100 percent, but then again, I didnt know the old musics were being replaced/deleted (if you guys are doing this, STOP IT)? This thread is about growth and depth and getting your composition skills beefed as well as chilling out and having fun with each other. Post your progress! Ex, Samot posted his wip and asked for advice and then posted another, which is good for comparing and contrasting the changes.
6) I am not sure 'Proud winner of this weeks workshop' is apt for this, remember it is a workshop, not a contest or competition (a competition might make newcomers to music production a little scared to contend with the more experienced users) a 'Highly Commended' badge might work, or even a 'Weekly Best would work, I do also agree getting it mentioned in the weekly announcement would be a big bonus to the confidence of the 'winner' but also would serve to draw attention to the thread.
when I said winner, I meant the best theme as agreed upon by the participants of the workshop, which was sort of a voting thing. Its supposed to always be like that. Id rather not have a huge LOL IM A SPECIAL BOY announcement. Putting it in the this week on .org, perhaps, as long as it isnt overhyped.
7) I also think we could decide themes in advance so people know when they are coming up, for example
Very bad idea. This thread is about creating on the spur of the moment, not giving initiative for composition. If this happens, this thread wont have as much pizazz because a participant might write the music for theme "a" way before hand and dump it. Thats another reason its weekly, so you dont have much time to write so you can pump out whatever you can. Its not for making symphonies or 10 min pieces, it should be a collection of short themes that can show your strengths and weaknesses in composition, and the feedback is in relation to that.
For the new thread ideas i agree with Illitum for the most part, using words like winner and other of such ilk would make most people 2nd think about joining in or even attempting to do a bit for the workshop, the point of this is to help each other become better, thats not a stab at anyone btw, i know im awful at this but
i find it fun so i give it a go, and thats how it should be as for the set up of the new forum i think the first post should be updated everytime something changes or the next theme is up
This is it exactly. You can be good or bad (not saying you are zeak!!) but as long as you have fun with it and want to get better this thread is for you. As for saying "winner", perhaps, I sort of agree with that, it does sound a bit pretentious. What about calling it the "Weekly Workshop Favorite" ?
again, i thought this was how it was supposed to be
From now on, the general consensus of the favorite theme will be declared the one who picks the next theme.
As for this week, Im gonna go ahead and let Illitum pick the next theme, which will last till this Sunday, ok d
Thanks for the feedback guys.
