Everybody seems to hate Naruto for the wrong reasons. You shouldn't hate the show because the fans are morons, or because there are a lot of 'em!
You should hate it because Kishimoto was only trying to re-make Dragonball Z with the least amount of effort so he could bask in the sea of money. You should hate it because each character has exactly one distinguishing character trait, but Kishimoto covers this up by having more characters than there are Pokemon. You should hate it because if all the filler were to be taken out (as in, entire episode arcs like the Rain village race and the numerous reused animation flashbacks and minute long still shots in every episode), the series could be compressed to a so-so 26 episodes. You should hate it because every character, even the main characters, are just extremely overused character archetypes without any expansion. Honestly, I haven't seen this "Shippuden" or whatever that everybody seems so crazy about, but I'm not falling for this trap again. I somehow seriously doubt that Kishimoto suddenly stopped being a no-talent hack. (Okay, that's harsh... he has talent at character design. Other than that, he's a hack.)
Also, Inuyasha. Guilty of almost all of the above, but because it caters to the legions of 16-year-old girls by giving them what is in essence an animated soap opera with long haired pretty boys, it'll be around forever. The one-up Naruto has in this department is that Kishimoto at least can design interesting characters. I think Takahashi bottomed out about mid-way through making Ranma 1/2 and became a one-trick pony, specializing exclusively in female-to-male spousal abuse. ("Sit Boy!" Aha ha ha ha! Hilarious!! /sarcasm)
It's a shame that so many of my favorite anime have been mentioned here, such as Berserk (mostly all about the manga though), Haruhi, and Death Note (Again, only read the manga, but the anime seems accurate). These are practically the only hope I've seen in the sea of crap that is modern anime.
Also, Big O and Bleach are definitely not top tier anime, but when it comes to 'broadly appealing' anime, it's them or it's Naruto and Inuyasha, and at least Bleach has a few complex and/or interesting characters while Big O has an interesting style.
Edit: Btw, I actually dislike most popular anime nowadays, but until they hit the airwaves, they aren't enough of a threat to rant about.
