Looks very basic, the bottom bar is way too big for the battler's HP, unless thats where you are going to select commands I guess. Then it would make more sense. Also the battlers dont have any SP bars? And how are you supposed to know how much HP your characters have? What does 1 apple represent in terms of HP?

The enemies are also going to have a "HP" bar (on the right).

There is no SP, and HP isn't really HP. Like I said it's not really a normal battle system.

There will also probably be a status bar at the base of the screen, rather than the default top.

It's the basic looks I need comments on. Oh well.

Basically, when you "attack" the enemy you choose between easy, medium, or hard. It brings up a puzzle to complete, and depending on how long it takes to complete the puzzle, or whether you get it right or not, chooses how much HP is taken off the enemy.

Well as for the basic looks change the windowskin, it is really bad. Also the green grass on the battleback looks odd, it sort of just spills out at the back, not really very grass like. Reallign the apples with the names as they are slightly misplaced at the moment and the last comment isn't really on looks its about that last name 'Sara', thats a set of armour on Runescape isn't it? :P

Looking good, looks like everyone's projects gonna be different in this contest.

New screenie, hopefully this makes much more sense as to what happens in the battle system. Before you say it, this is a "Hard" puzzle which deals 3 damage, so is supposed to e... hard.

Windowskins still need to change, and I'm still not sure about the base windowskin (I've changed it from before but I'm still not that happy with it).

Ignore the bad grammar, fix't.

I might reposition the battlers so that they aren't hidden by the puzzle window.

o0o Looks good! And challenging at the same time! So since this is a "Hard Puzzle" will there be easier ones so I don't have to spend 10 minutes to attack once? By the way, RTP is gr0s5

Hmm, I'm not sure if I like that or not. I think it's just too simple. And it doesn't look very wintery.

Keeping up the Winter Competition screenshots, here's one from the game I'm making for the contest.

Everything there is custom, except the template and panorama. It's ment to be quite simple.

You have my vote to win.

Please tell me you're going to use a different font.

Other than that, it looks like it's taking place in the summer. The only thing wintery-ish is way in the background. (unless that's what you were going for)

The battle system seems interesting though. I guess we'll have to play it to really understand it.

That is what I'm going for. The idea is, giving everything away about the storyline, you're bringing back the snow.

And yeah, the windowskin and fonts are placeholders.

...No...No...are you kidding me? Ugh, we have the same story focus. My game too revolved around bringing back the snow. Hmph, I didn't want it to be similiar, but I guess it is. Oh well, I might have to change it then.

As for you new screen shot, I love it a lot better then your other ones. I think it looks best this way, with the choices right in the middle. Now the Apples and Skulls don't look so funny.  I actually don't mind the font, but it'd be cool to see what else you could do with it.

Edit: As to my first paragraph, I may have come across a very interesting change! Rather then it being a change from normal to snow, my game shall now revolve around it constantly changing, and you have to fix that. So the town will constantly be turned from snowy to normal and vice-versa. Not a bad idea to come up with in like 5 minutes.

This the in-game screen of my menu. The only the thing that might change are the icons, as I want to change them to more modern custom icons. I'll even provide the mock-up so you can see how close I got 'em.

Got them pretty close, eh? I am rather satisfied with the results. Here's the HUD as well, matching the style of the menu:

@Bernard Marx
Holy Lord, that looks amazing! That's got to be the best screenshot I've ever seen from an VX game. The mapping is awesome as well. Are they Mack's tiles?
The only thing I'd say is that the yellow boxes for the skills and items on the HUD don't really match. Other than that, good job.

@Nickster
Yeah, I know it seems a bit weird, but the old Mario games did that as well, and I'm trying to capture that sort of Mario ish feel (in case you hadn't guessed lol).

Will we be able to walk on the ice?
Because the snow will be back at some point, and areas you could never reach will be accessible. :D

yeah, that'd be awesome
