@InvisibleDrifter: I hope you don't make grass like the RTP... I like the style of the grass you have there much better than the RTP grass. It has a sort of SNES feel that I love. It's just the pallete you seem to be having a few issues with. As far as the leaves on the tree are concerned, maybe use this pallete for the coloring, the darkest shade being the outline:

Brandonn: Cool i will take a look at that, you didn't find the grid but i have the colors, thanks.

EDIT: I will keep the grass, just have to experiment with the color some more :D,
plus i have to darken the trunk a tad more under the leaf area.

Loving the Barrels Drif!

@InvisibleDrifter: That's looking awesome. I like the progress. :)

Anyway, here's what I've been working on pretty much all of today. I just got started writing and spriting and composing for my intro scene, and I finished the airship's forward facing animation, the panorama, and the music to go behind the scene all today. It's getting late though (or early, 4 in the morning, ugggghhh), so I'll show what I've done and then I need to go to sleep. Anyway, tell me what you think:

Arcanum, nice..really impressive as usual :)
Thanks man. I haven't seen much of your stuff lately though... have you been working on anything?

Arcanum your screenshot is breathtaking! Is the panorama hand painted?
In photoshop, yes! It took a hell of a long time though, and it was a pain at first, but it finally started to take shape at around midnight last night, and then it was fun from there on out. Thanks though. I plan on making a couple more for my intro sequence too.

Very pretty :) The horizon could be disapearing in a fog, though.
Yeah, I was thinking about that. I could still make some clouds to go on the horizon... I think I'll do that today if I'm not busy with something else.

Agreed

When you land the airship does the map change underneath it? or are you using some fancy script to change the look of it?
You actually don't get to control the airship (at least at the early portion of the game, I might change that later, but it might be too much effort, I'm not sure yet) in that shot. It's the introductory scene to the as of now untitled game I'm working on, so it'll just have some fancy text fading in and out (possibly with a voice acted narrator, but I'm not sure I want to do that) and some other effects. It would be a pain to draw a whole world map like that too. That panorama is basically all present in the screenshot, since it's a 640x480 panorama.

If you make the panorama taller, and make the Sky an image overtop, you can have the Panorama slowly scroll downwards to make the Airship appear as if it is moving forwards.

Wow, Arcanum. Nice. Color me jealous.

Trying out a different style of grass:

I gotta' say, that's the best looking grass I've seen executed. Would you be offended if I tried to mimic it?

Not at all. ^_^ I'll even tell you how I did it - start with a square of the darkest color. Then draw some grass blades in the middle color. Highlight with the light color. Go back and touch up blank looking areas. Then make a couple variations with different grass clumps to break up the grid.

Now that I've come back to it, I can see the gridlines a bit. Need to make it tile a bit better...

If I'm honest, it's horribly bland compared to your maps and normal characters. It just doesn't work for me.

It's a shame you don't like it. but it's actually done in the same palette and style as the other characters. i guess it's a matter of tastes.

thanks to everyone for their support, and I'm, glad some liked it :)

Ohh, and here's a little teaser :)

Ccoa: that looks excellent, but I fear that you do need to make some transition tiles from the grass to the stone road, as the road looks a bit too pasted onto the map. You can also try to make the benches look a bit older. Surely, for benches who continuously stand outside in the rain, the wood would look a bit more rigged and uneven.
