Pixel Art WIPs/Small Things Thread

Eriol: More hue variation in your palettes, especially the purple and red. It also looks flat.

You know, your template has always struck me as tubular. The legs in particular could use some more definition, and the feet are weird--it looks like the viewer is looking at the bottom of them. Put a highlight at the toe rather than a shadow.

A couple pixel sprites I made for I game in game maker which I may or may not even make

Funky Clyde and Evil Santa, both based on Megaman X

So how do I alter it to not to make it flat, Peri? I'm a bit serious on continuing my template, it seems that I'm failing to get to the standards looked up by other people who were good enough in spriting...

My first time creating a walking sprite, so I could use some advice. :)

The kickback of the leg looks kind of weird imo. It seems to snap too quickly and looks like it's being jerked or something. The tail could also use a bit of polishing, like perhaps all one smooth motion because it also looks twitchy. Other than that, looks great for a first walking attempt.

@silver wind: Hmm... it would have probably been easier to try something other than a dinosaur for your first walking sprite, they're probably kinda tough. xP If I stare at the legs I sometimes just can't make out what's going on. The left and right legs seem to keep switching places. For the right leg, there seems to be too big of a movement between being the at the far back to the next frame. For the left, there's a big jump between extended forward and the next frame... I think.

Maybe this will help, maybe not, who knows, but I found this image from an animation tutorial:

That includes extra frames, but for a 4-frame animation, you'd just use the "contact" and "passing" frames. Now in RPG Maker, the passing frames used are the same as the idle frame for the character, which for a person is just both feet together. It's not really noticeable for a human in their walk cycle, but it may stick out more on a dino. If you really look at an RTP sprite's feet while they walk, they just kinda slide back and forth on the ground. You could model the dino feet by the contact and passing points shown in the pic and have a smooth walk but not much of an idle frame, or replace both passing with an idle frame like the RTP sprites and have a less smooth walk, but a natural-looking idle frame. I'm probably just talking too much now, though.

Thanks, Dadevster, I'll make the tail movement smoother.
By 'kickback' Do you mean the frame showing the back side of the leg?

Dustin, I did use contact-passing-contact-passing, but I have 5 frames (it's not for RMXP). Maybe I'll add a 6th frame to fix the problem Dadevster mentioned.
The legs do look as if they're switching places, it used to be worse. I thought I fixed it.

There's one frame when the left leg is starting to come forward when it looks like the top is facing the viewer, and it's bent weird.

And the frame where the right leg is the highest has the bottom of the foot showing. That should only show in the frame when it's just coming off the ground, or both.

It's looking much better now, though.

BloodRage: That is very nice! The grass looks rougher than everything else because of the higher contrast, but yeah, nice work. I really like the sand and cliffs.

silver_wind: The legs look like they're switching places, yeah. As a protip, animate one leg first, then copy and paste all the frames for the back leg and make them darker (staggered, of course). Also, have the body go up and down and have the tail carry the body's movement through. I also recommend using eight frames. This may be helpful.

By the way, it may be easier to practice on people than on dinosaurs because there are lots of references online for people, but you should be able to adapt them.

Yeah, the way the foot jumps also makes the movement not seem smooth. The huge gap in distance between the frames where the foot goes back is what's making the switching illusion.

I did an own topic in the wrong forum about this sprite.
But now I see that this is where you're supposed to post things like this.

Anyway, I'm making a game with anime styled graphics and the hair came out really crappy.
Does anyone have any pointers on what I should do to make tha hair better?
I tried to get the hair somewhat spiky but as you can see it was a complete failure.
The shape of the hair is not good at all and the shading isn't too good either.
