KPhoenix's Artwork [Vehicle fin]

I can't say I'm digging Space Prince's hand. His lips, ears, and nose are very well drawn however. Good as usual in most respects.

You always do such great hair, KP! But yeah, the S. Prince needs a little work done on his hand--his ear seems a little round, too :)

But nice!

@Shifter: Thankies^^ it's always a thrill to see you post, it made me want to go back to trying my Shoujo style lineart again. I also attempted to color it, but it looks worse when I do it. I wish I had Racheal's talent, in fact if I have her permission, I'd like to show one of my older linearts she colored. C'est manifigencent!

Ah well here's my attempt at coloring this lineart

@Venetia & Dzaj: I finally pinpointed what is wrong with the hand; the pinky is way too long and the palm is way too short in comparission with the fingers. Took a lot of studing pics to pinpoint, so I'm in the process of redoing his hand. Is this getting there?

I really love the lineart. :)
My only possible suggestions would be to experiment with varying the line widths (like you did around her face) throughout the piece, and to be extra careful when doing the small details on the clothing.

As for the coloured version, it looks as if you became a bit tired of colouring it as you move down the piece, especially for the skirt. No offense though - I'm guilty of doing this... >_< Referencing and studying folds helps if you don't have a concrete idea of the look you're going for. Kinda like hair. Maybe. Sorta.

Speaking of the hair, I don't really like how the pen lines are still there, unless I look at it from a distance. While they look great in the original linework, it doesn't seem to fit in with shading style for the rest of it. It may be a just a preference, though. I suggest *gulp* making a new layer and painting directly over your black lines with dark purple in small brush-strokes, and adding highlights to the other parts.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v473/la2citrus/sample.gif[/img](I hope you don't mind. :-[ And if you'd like any clarification, feel free to ask!) By doing something like this, you still make good use of your original lines, but get a smoother effect that meshes better with your soft colouring on the face and clothing.
Next, you have a lot of different, bold colours in your image, which isn't a problem, but if you want to unify them a bit, you might want to experiment with different types of lighting (and possibly warm or cool coloured lighting). It's also great for adding atmosphere. My last suggestion is that zooming in on the image helps me to keep things neat; and remember to keep a constant light source even on small detailing. :) I hope that helps a little.

No I don't mind at all^^
I am absolutely CLUELESS when it comes to coloring. I mostly just "wing" it. I've been searching for books on how to shade, using neopiko or copic markers and PaintshopPro(cause when I can access the net varies) but I've not come across many....>.> of course I may be looking in all the wrong places. That little example was a REAL eye opener, it really gives me a feel of what I should do.

And yes, I start to get lazy as I get closer to the bottom >.< My eyes start to glaze over and I start seeing things.

=) That piece is beautiful also. I also think the coloring is very nicely done :P I always really love the expressions your characters have...really feels like there is emotion there, Love it!

I really love your artwork. you've got a lot of talent. I agree that the pen lines take away from the art when it's colored. The only guides I've seen that give exellent advice on realistic shading are for car designing, but there's got to be more. Flip through some of those... I think I saw them at Barnes & Noble in the art section (if you happen to live near one). Also, try to work up the discipline. That's honestly the hardest thing for a talented artist to do. Start, work, and Finish... take your time and don't rush through. It's better to take a lot of time to finish a really great picture and get it done right than it would be to rush through to get it done. That's my biggest problem, personally.

For some cc, definately get a good artists anatomy reference. I've got one that's ring bound and big, and has literally tons of different poses and sketches of (almost) every body part. I couldn't survive without it, so you're a much better artist than I am. DEFINATELY keep up the good work. Some of your characters are just gorgeous.

Well I lost my ink pen and couldn't ink in some things I wanted to color, so I instead I've been sketching using a ballpoint pen, and try my hand at shading REALLY hard to not make mistakes with...It's not something I'll be doing a lot of esp when I find or Buy some new inkers.
-Just a cute little girl, practicing on child hands ^^;

Wow, the lines look very crisp, and the shading on the space girl looks fantastic. I like the subtle little clothing creases in both pictures. One of the little girl's fingers (on her left hand) is too thin, otherwise they look pretty good. Seeing these, I really do feel like practicing and improving my own drawing more too. :thumb:

Thank you akaire ^^ Please post some of your stufferies!!

Here's some new stuff

Elven Princess Katra Pietra (from my game) In alternate uniform.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n225/Kiearaphoenix/elvenprincess.png[/img]
I used corel painter x for the background, ballpoint pen for the form and colored her in with copic markers.

And just one I call Butterfly Serenity.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n225 ... renity.png[/img]Used a ballpoint pen for the outline and this time just paintshop pro for the background and copic markers for the actual person.

I have always loved the amount of detail your designs have
the hands look awkward... they dont blend in with the drawings, Katra`s right hand has lots of issues... like size, and it can be interpretated like a right or left hand XP
Awsome use of color(like always), I wish I used as many colors, my drawings tend to be monochromatic

thankies Avadan ^^: I'm going to go out and just buy one of those wooden hand models -;_; I'm not getting it at all (hands and fingers) after the upteeth attempt. Arrrrrgggghh.

EDIT: After spending a whole day trying to fig. out exactly why I can get so many other aspects of anatomy through studying or teaching myself but can't do hands, I discovered why it may be.

I look at the body in ovaloid cubes and spheres. The torso is a cube, the upperwaist a sphere the lower waist an upside down cubed trapazoid, arms and legs are two ovaloid cubes and the joints spheres, etc. The hand, is 8 cubes of varied lengths with 8 spheres toped by an invered smooth cone and the thumb, is...I have no idea; sitting on another few bones that connect to the wrists with MORE bones. I don't think I really pay attention nor keep tract of all those things. I just draw what I think I see in books, a three dimensional model I hope would make me stay aware of such things, and keep in mind just how much is involved in the anatomy of this particular part of the body.

Thank you akaire ^^ Please post some of your stufferies!!
You're welcome. If I make something okay I might post it. But for now I just have a bunch of stuff that I once though was good, and then thought, "Bleh." Ehehe.

I know you said that your internet access varies, but usually I just google tutorials up. I dug up a long but IMO nice tutorial on hands that may or may not help: http://www.anticz.com/handtut.htm  I'll see if I can find anything better.

Also, in the meanwhile, you can try to observe your own hand in different poses if you're able to.

Anyway, about your new art: First, the swooshy-ness of the hair is awesome. Your jewellry designs are also very nice. I like the folds in the clothing, except for the collar in Butterfly Serenity. I think that the highlights look too bright or umm... too "choppy" (not as smoothly blended) in that picture also, but I'm guessing that was because you were working with a limited range of markers? (I don't know too much about copics though... sadly. )

Yea, half the time I'm responding or replying using my cell phone, which is my only constant net access right about now. (sometimes I use the library or a friends comp when I REALLY need decent access) And my cell doesn't like pictures, ...ever.. >.< But it's either that or no I-net at all and seeing as how groceries are kinda toping my budget priorities; well, I just have this thing against starving. I don't know why. ^^

I do like that tut. Thank you much! It really opened my eyes about knuckles, something else I forget to incorporate into my drawing equations...>.>

As for the copic markers not blending well in the butterfly pic, yea I only have four purple copics. 2 are warm purples and 2 are cool colors. I really need a lilacy and more lighter purples, I did try to blend with a soft pink but it didn't look as good so I left the empty space just white going for a highly sheeny fabric look. (copic markers are...expensive $5.95 a pop, or for a set of twelve $71.40! (unless you can find sales)Again, sadly not starving comes into play, so I can dream and wish and save up, or buy 'em four at a time...slow process...but I'm gonna collect 'em all!

 Aw, that doesn't sound too great. I do support your decision of not starving though. >_>
I'm glad the tutorial was helpful though, and you're welcome.

And yes, of my limited knowledge of copics, I've heard of their scary prices, so I don't blame you at all. ;_;

Hey, your ballpoint sketches are fantastic! Did you do them completely freehand? If so, bravo. While you're building your collection of markers, try Painter's marker sets, they're pretty damn good, though like everything in painter they take some getting used to - assuming you have regular access to it.

Also, I recommend "Anatomy for the Artist" as far as your hands problem goes, I learned probably 70% of what I know about anatomy out of that book - the other 30% mostly from studies. You should be able to find a newer edition at Barnes & Noble, mine's gigantic and about 10 years old now, but I've seen some nice softcover ones recently that are reasonably portable. Anyway if you come across it, flip through it.

Your coloring is definitely not up to par with your lineart, which I can sympathize with, it's taken me a long time to get anywhere with color and my painting is still awful. I don't have much of a specific critique on it right now, partially because I'm tired and partially because I don't know enough about it to be informative. Keep practicing is all I can say.

Oh yeah, your nouveau borders on some of your pieces are excellent.
