I only got the state's minimum necessary amount of car insurance, and didn't get medical insurance. I figured, I'm young, I'm a good driver, what's the point in spending extra?
My car hit a metal ladder some yokel dropped right in front of me on the interstate while I was going like 80. Tire popped, car spun out, and I plowed headfirst into the guard rail going an estimated 65-70 mph.
My knee got messed up (thankfully that's all that happened--I was wearing my seat belt and it saved me from painting the windshield with my face), and my car was completely totaled. I still owed $10K on it.
I deny medical care because I can't afford the medical bills. My car insurance didn't cover that kind of collision--if I'd gotten one package more expensive (an extra $15/mo), or if I'd hit a person accidentally or if someone hit me, or if that f'ing yokel had come back to own up to his bad, it'd have been covered. That happened summer 2006, btw.
Now my knee is permanently messed up. I'm going to be paying off that car that is not a car but a hunk of metal until mid-2009.
Fail.
