Chrono Crisis

After careful consideration, the other team members and I have decided to release three versions of Chrono Crisis. Recently I decided to go with the original Japanese plot of Chrono Trigger that has been unearthed through retranslation, and the original names. This causes quite a few changes, which are highlighted on our forums.

http://z14.invisionfree.com/ChronoCrisis/index.php?showtopic=1108 for Chrono Trigger.

http://z14.invisionfree.com/ChronoCrisis/index.php?showtopic=1128 for Chrono Cross.

These will be three versions of Crisis released:

Version 1: The full version, with voices. This will be based on the North American naming system. However, all other changes that were made from the Japanese version will be fixed in this version. This includes mistranslations such as Janus being Schala's "step brother", personality changes (instances like Frog, where his persona was completely altered), some spelling issues, and references to alchohol/planet worship (and other things that were censored due to NOA's regulations). We'll still include a dictionary in this version that displays both the American and Japanese names for people who are curious.

Version 2: The lower filesize version. This version lacks voice acting, and will be using the North American naming system. Aside from lacking the voice acting, it'll be nearly identical to version 1. This is also the only version in which you can rename main characters.

Version 3: International. This is the version that has the Japanese naming system, and may include some sort of extra content. Like the NA versions, there'll be a dictionary for reference, showing the Japanese to English names.

We may be including voice acting in the Japanese naming system version as well, but it's not for sure yet. This will require a lot of extra work on my part but I'm willing to do it to please the fans.

Please, give me your thoughts on the matter. ^^ Oh, and you still have until the 7th of February to enter our art contest! Check out the details here if you haven't already: http://www.rmxp.org/forums/showthread.php?t=11872

This is one of the rare exceptions for RPG Maker XP, wonderfully built game, I adore the battle system and menu's they look simply amazing. Good work, I can't wait to see more from this game!

This is going to be great. I'm a huge chrono trigger fan and thought chrono cross didn't do the original justice. So, this looks to get back to some of the basics and will be cool. Any release info yet?

How can you adore it when it hasnt been released yet?

I think the game will be great but the decision to have a different version with Japanese names seems like a waste of time just to please purists.

well, it's one thing to please the audience with stuff they want.

another thing to please the audience with stuff they didn't know they want.

But they still want it on some level. =) I think it's cool to use the original names and personalities. That seems like the right way to make a fangame.

The reason we decided to make more than one version is I personally want to make the game with the original Japanese names and personalities to honor Trigger and Cross as they were meant to be. However I understand that most people are familiar with the North American names. I'm sure other people will want to play through a game based on Trigger and Cross as they were meant to be, so depending on your preferences (original or nostalgia) you can choose which version you want to play.

I'm so happy you decided to release a version with the American names. I like Chrono Trigger, and seeing/reading a version uncensored is interesting (specifically Frog), but changing the names to be more Japanese and "authentic" just felt pointless to me. I grew up with Chrono, Marle, Lucca, Robo and Magus. Changing the names of everything back to the Japanese version would make an already complicated plot even more complex.

I didn't say pleasing your audience isn't important. But when you are in charge of a project you have to realise you're never going to please everyone.

Couldn't you just program the game so that at the start you could choose whether you want to play with the original Japanese names or American? It couldn't be too difficult. I'm not an expert at scripting or anything but I'm sure you could just set the names to be variables and depending on what setting you chose it would display that version of the name.

In that case I would have to include all of the voice acting, which would increase the file size A LOT. It's much easier to release different versions so people can pick which they want.

You're going to have voice acting? For dialogue or for battle cries, magic, etc.?

I can't really see voice acting as having a positive effect on the game. It would seem very out of place on a game that is being made to look like a game for the SNES. I've seen voice acting used in a few older RPGs and it always comes off cheesy. And this is with professional recording and voice actors.

This Looks Awesome Dude O.O
Cant wait to play It, Any Reference to Chrono Crusade In it though?
(Chrno Cameo :p at least [even if he is...well if ya'v sen it you'll know)

That's why we have a non voice acting version, for people like yourself who'd prefer to not hear voice acting.

Final Fantasy X has voice acting, and you can still name the main character. How? Smart writing and controlled voice acting.

And to support CoF, voice acting worked for Disgaea, and it's not all that advanced a game.

The only version that will have the option of renaming characters is the non voice acting version because it's weird to skip around saying a character's name just for the sake of you being able to name them. It seems really impersonal in my opinion. Either way, I know some people don't want a voice acted version so we're providing one.
