The map borders look nice. How did you/Zeriab do that? Is it just a picture?

For the game, the only thing I can say is: There are so many ORPGs with XP or VX out there and whenever a new one is released I say to myself "Another one which is never going to be released :/". So, I'll wait until there is a something playable which is not full of hackers and cheaters. Then I may feel like I want to read the whole presentation topic :dead:

If it helps this one was actually released for three months in 2008 :p But then it has been in production since January 2007, spawning off an older MMORPG from 2005... Oh dear.

Zeri helped me make it so that the player is always in the centre and the edges are black with a script and then I added a picture over the top that is locked to the map position using a script from the script forums. The actual fade effect is just a picture.

You say this game is commercial,So the game will be similar to runescape? You will need to pay money for more zones to visit? ;/

It used to be commercial but this time around it's more casual. I don't know if there will be pay to play items, but if there are it will be like Guild Wars (pay once) rather than RuneScape.

Or, failing that, just donations.

The thing is for this to succeed I need a VPS, which is gonna cost $20 a month probably, or $240 a year, which is way out of my budget if I don't get a job.

i have been wanting to play this for years

FINISH IT!

This is probably the closest it's ever got to being playable and fun.

The good thing is there would be absolutely no handling costs (minus taxes) since all that needs to be done is a switch changed on the server when the money comes through. So you'd know that almost all your money was going towards the server costs. Unlike say, Aveyond, where 10% goes to the distributor, some more to the portal, and so on.

Currently mapping Tiben Town. It's the main town in the area, and has all the shops and shit that you need for your travels. It's also where you start the Inquisition campaign. (It'll also give me chance to work on the world map as walking into Tiben will unlock travel to that area).

The world map above by the way is for the Inquisition campaign only - I have a LOT more planned than that (it will probably span multiple maps); but Inq will span those major towns/areas/villages/whatnot.

I say do a one time $10 fee for people wanting to play, and then maybe pay more for some sort of gold membership (maybe beta access and a gold name tag?) that could cost around 30$. Are you working off of what you had or are you starting from scratch?

Completely from scratch; the only thing I'm keeping, loosely, is the storyline and some of the concepts.

It's built up from Netplay+ 1.6.3 though; "heavily editted" (really heavily... heh. I guess you'll have to just believe me there)

If you make one time fee,you will get less players first try to grow up community for free then think about future and money.Maybe you can make pay to play items..

Just and idea ;)

If you make one time fee,you will get less players
What an ignorant statement. I think that perhaps people should pay 10$ for a silver membership which has ads in a banner above or below the game, and then $15 for a gold membership without the ads, and perhaps a gold name tag or something else for people to show off (kinda like the orange name sponsors get). Reason being is that you can get money for yourself too, and either way you are getting your server cost plus money for you. That gives you more incentive to make more content, and then the players get more content, plus an always online server. It's really a win-win.

I dunno. I'd like to cater for free players, perhaps once the server is paid for.

I'm not sure what the update schedule is going to be. It all depends if I can get an auto-updater or not, as downloading the whole game again ever week is not good!

Ok -- initially the game is going to be commercial (once I've remade the few scripts which are other people's, not counting Netplay+ which I've got permission to use from a long time ago (although it was a while ago, they might have changed their minds)) for the first few weeks.

Just until half a year to a year's hosting is paid for.

I had an offer of a free shell but to be honest I would rather get my own hosting because I don't feel safe; you know, if I badly code something I don't want to bring down someone's server who I'm not paying :x

Uh I found a VPS for $6.95 a month that might do; that's only what, $85 a year, easily managable.

If paid accounts sold for $10 that would only be nine people to buy it and then free players will be allowed in.

There needs to be a clear distinction between free and paid though because otherwise why would people pay! There defnately need to be big benefits for paying members, not just a "thank you" note on a bench somewhere.

Once the update schedule is sorted out it will probably be in the form of one to two updates per month, alternating between a free update and paid only. Something like every third update will be available to free members.

Man, this is the closest Vengeance has ever got to being released; I'm majorly excited about this! It could happen!

What would be useful is to brainstorm paid benefits here.

One obvious benefit is server caps. Once I see how well the server performs, I may need to pop a cap in it's ass and only allow a certain number of members in at a time. Paying members would have privalege over free members in this case. That all depends on how the server performs though.

I had said before that HBGames sponsors would get a free paid account but I just can't keep up with that since HBGames staff don't see a penny of sponsorship payments. I'd like to support HBGames, yes, but I need to pay for my own hosting first!

Anyway this is all well into the future since University is coming up in a matter of weeks. Once enrollment and settling in is out of the way it'll be a better time.

With regards to hacking / decompiling

RPG Maker can be easily decrypted. This poses a problem -

Hell, last release I said I would give the graphics and scripts for free if people asked and still I know of at least six people who hacked the game! I don't care if you had good intentions, you are dicks. (Zeriab is excempt because I had to ask him to decrypt it when I lost my files :x)

Regardless, it would be silly to assume nobody will hack the game.

But -

Since variables go through the server, everything is checked for spikes and anomolies. There are caps on how much exp and gold can be gained per hour, etc.

Things such as the paid/free flag cannot be changed by anybody outside of the server. No amount of hacking the game will change that. This means that while you may be able to hack the game itself to get access to paid content, you cannot hack your way around the freeplayer cap and such.

The server also knows what map you are in - and if it sees a free player in a paid members map it will boot you and send me a message. I could make it know which items are paid only and boot you if you obtain them. There's lots I could do really.

I dunno, this would be a good thing to brainstorm.

This looks really good wyatt :D
I really hope you will succeed.

Feel free to send me a pm or talk to me on irc if you want more help :3

@Neo-Bahamut:
I changed map data table before the tilemap got it.

*hugs*

I'm not sure about this map -- but this is Tiben town so far (West):

I've been a bit (very) slack with my map edges - they don't line up - but I always find making border meet border restricts mapping a lot. So, just assume there are at least five tiles between each map to allow for any descrepancies.
