What is the best PSone RPG ever?

Greatest could be interpreted one of many ways. It could be the RPG that is the best overall, or it could be the one that effected the most people, or it could be the one that effected the industry the most, or it could be, simply, the one that sold the best. No one has defined what "greatest" is.

If they're both being used in general overall terms, they're synonymous. But if you're looking for the greatest story, or characters, or setting, it wont nessecarily be in the highest quality game. Hope that makes sense.

I never mentioned any definition of "greatest". All I said is that sales are not an indication of quality.

Well, while LoL was definately not the pinnacle of PSone rpgs, when you consider the way the story opened, the main character being 13 isn't too far fetched. In the outset, it implies that his more or less coming of age ceremony was just around the corner. His first hunt. May I remind you that in the middle ages children that age went off to war all the time.
He was also shall we say "enhanced" by his Ra-Seru. I'm assuming this gave him as a thirteen year old boy some greater strength, and the voice at least could provide some guidence.
While I typically write my stories about people in their late 20s and early 30s, that doesn't mean that you should stop playing a game just because of a single line of dialogue. If his age bugs you so much it would ruin an otherwise enjoyable game for you, then maybe you have some growing up to do yourself. That's awfully fickle don't you think?

Also, I feel bad for forgetting to mention PE2 in my list of favorites back there, but I sometimes forget it was technically an RPG. Same with Brave Fencer Musashi

And rexxz, honestly, I think sales are the ONLY indication we can have that isn't based on someones arbitrary point value based opinion. Seriously, if everyone but you bought the game and liked it, then either you assume that everyone else is crazed which seems like something you would do, or swallow your pride and admit it must be good, but that somehow you just didn't see it.

It's just like me and Halo - sometimes I think everyone in the world must be crazy to be obsessed with what I find to be a horrifyingly mediocre game with a bland multiplayer that brings absolutely nothing to the table but griefing with no skill one hit kills. I'll take UT2K4 or FEAR multiplayer any day, thanks. But I have to concede that Halo must somehow be a good game, and that for some reason I'm just missing the point.

Yes, but this thread is to identify the "best" or "greatest" RPG on the PSX. So sales figures could be a way to identify the best game, depending on how you're defining best and/or greatest. Thus the argument that a game is the best based on popularity is valid.

EDIT: Arc, reread the article. I finished playing the game, it just disgusted me. It was a complete fantasy killer, and given the mediocre quality of the game, it was enough to push it over the edge from "okay, store and maybe replay" to "ebay immediately after finishing."

No, it isn't. Sales is not a way to identify anything but which game sells the most, it is not indicative of anything else.

ccoa, I was actually referring to the person in the article who said they stopped playing in disgust after that line, not necessarily to you specifically. I may have lost my train of thought along the way there though.

Once again, it depends on how you are defining best (and I don't know which RPG sold the most, this is simply hypothetical). If by best I mean the game with the most copies in homes, then that would most likely be the game that sold the most copies. If by best I mean the one that people will go to extremes to have long after its release, then the one with the highest resale value is possibly the best.

Best and greatest are not well-defined words. This thread would be far better (and really is, for the most part) what is your favorite PSX game.

Arc, I wrote the article. -_-

Haha, oops.

And who says children can't use earth shattering magic?!

Like the line in Pirates of the Caribbean 2 repeated more or less accurately from memory -
"It's a mythical creature, and I'll pronounce it however I want."

Well, I really can't say for sure which was the best since, as people have been saying, the "best" is really hard to pin down.

My favorites however, are FFVII, FFIX, Xenogears, FFT, Vagrant Story, and Parasite Eve 1&2.

Vagrant Story had an awesome storyline, but man, I never did get the hang of the weapons in that game. I never managed to hit a boss for more than 1 damage, and only won boss fights by reflecting damage. o.o;

Haha you had to take the time to combine and build them up. So many had this problem but it's so easy.

Anyways though Vagrant Story is my favorite rpg game ever I'm surprised few have mentioned the Persona series. Was a very interesting game in my eye.

Persona had a limited release (until Gamestop reprinted it a few months ago) so it's no wonder why few people have played it.

On the first place Suikoden 2. (Great story, superb music, etc)
Then Vagrant Story (it's like Medieval Metal Gear Solid)
Xenogears was nice to (just a tad to complex story)
Final Fantasy 7 sucked.. but FF8 and 9 were great

I'm going to be really 'Original' and say FFVII lol. It's just a great game, plus I know a few of the people who worked on it :D

I guarantee that this topic will immediately fill with a bunch of fanboys drooling over Final Fantasy Seven.

In which case, this topic whould be renamed to "most overrated PS RPG ever".

Despain, your not wrong.....FF7 it is! Though I did enjoy Mediaval too, and Rayman :P

FF Tactics sucked noodles!

But all those common ones that instantly pop to mind, Metal Gear Solid was a classic.

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete is my personal favorite PS1 RPG. My runners up are Final Fantasy IX, and the remakes of Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI, even if there were problems with loading times.
