I find it "gay" to assume you know the motives behind a stranger's prefference. Also, if you base quality on popularity you're simply a fool.
A fool? More like a
TOOL.
There are lots of high quality games out there that never got popular because they're either too "different" or they were poorly advertised. Sometimes a game comes out at the same time as a more popular game like how System Shock 2 was overshadowed by the Game of the Year edition of Half-Life (even though I felt SS2 was superior to Half-Life).
Have you heard of games like Realms of the Haunting, Heart of Darkness, Oddworld (thankfully a bit more popular), Skygunner, Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil, or Little Big Adventure? You've probably heard the names tossed around once or twice, but those games as well as dozens of others are considered cult classics and get incredible reviews but they didn't sell MILLIONS (hell, Psychonauts sold 70,000!!).
I'm glad you have the ability to form your own opinion so here's mine; Final Fantasy isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread. Some of the games are good, others are really good, but
OMFG SUPER GODLY?? With hundreds and hundreds of games on the market, I think not.
