What is the best PSone RPG ever?

I like Suikoden II despite the fact that I've only played it once and ended up with the worst ending (it was a couple of years ago and I didn't know there were any others). Legend of Mana is good, but Breath of Fire III and IV are probably two of the highest rated PS1 games on my list.

I'm sure there's a lot of other games I'm forgetting, but I have a bad memory and a hard time picking favorites. :-/

to be honest, i dont really go for playing wise in a game, its mostly story for me, and in this case, i dont think many ppl will argue that FFVII does have the best story........

Final Fantasy 8 Was horribly lacking in story, gameplay, and how to keep the player glued to the TV for hours. in which case im voting it completely down with an atomic bomb added to drop on the case.. down for the count gentlemen....

I played retail Japan LoD, so yea it was good... but i still dont think it's story even comes close to FFVII....

A good story, yes.

The best story? Absolutely not but that's based on opinion.

It's hard for me to say what the best ps1 rpg is. I can't think of an rpg that really had a major IMPACT on me because it's been so long. Final Fantasy Tactics was one of Square's most compelling and realistic stories as was Vagrant Story, but Persona 2 was one of the first games to truly disturb me in terms of setting and theme (as was Parasite Eve).

I think overall, the ps1 port of Grandia touched me the most. It's one of the few games that I played that made me feel like I was actually exploring this unique world and while the acting or plot itself won't win any awards, the incredible characterization won me over. No other game thus far has had such a cute love story as what happened between Justin and Feena and party members would come and go based on their personal agendas (you even had to sadly remove a loved party member because they got home sick and it would be cruel to continue on with them).

For me, it’s Xenogears most definitely. I just feel its story as having a lot more thought put into it when compared to the other RPGs I’ve played, and it is this that I find admirable about it. Also it’s the only RPG I’ve played where I have been bothered to play through it a second time. I was so engrossed into the story that I just didn’t want to see it end. It has managed to leave an impression on me that stills stays with me now, and it is the source of my inspiration to create an RPG quite like it in terms of quality (subjective of course).

The problem with Xenogears is that the second disc was nothing more than a massive anime-like filler. I hated how the characters were simply like "lol this is what i did" instead of actually letting you PLAY IT.

Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 9
Breath of Fire 3
Grandia

People only say Final Fantasy is over-rated because they want to be different and i find that gay...you dont just say that cause you want to be "unique", you need to check fan base, poll and sales figures to decide which RPG was the best and by far its Final Fantasy 7.

I find it "gay" to assume you know the motives behind a stranger's prefference. Also, if you base quality on popularity you're simply a fool.

A fool? More like a TOOL.

There are lots of high quality games out there that never got popular because they're either too "different" or they were poorly advertised. Sometimes a game comes out at the same time as a more popular game like how System Shock 2 was overshadowed by the Game of the Year edition of Half-Life (even though I felt SS2 was superior to Half-Life).

Have you heard of games like Realms of the Haunting, Heart of Darkness, Oddworld (thankfully a bit more popular), Skygunner, Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil, or Little Big Adventure? You've probably heard the names tossed around once or twice, but those games as well as dozens of others are considered cult classics and get incredible reviews but they didn't sell MILLIONS (hell, Psychonauts sold 70,000!!).

I'm glad you have the ability to form your own opinion so here's mine; Final Fantasy isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread. Some of the games are good, others are really good, but OMFG SUPER GODLY?? With hundreds and hundreds of games on the market, I think not.

I love Final Fantasy IX alot. I also like Chrono Cross (Just a bit). If we are also talking about ports, such as Final Fantasy Origins, Then I also Say Final Fantasy II.

Don't get me wrong, though. Like I said, xenogears is that cult following thing and I still dont like it because its just not fun. The equation seems to be that people look harder for flaws in popular games and look harder for good aspects in games people havent heard of that much. Its kind of silly, good is good and bad is bad, a game shouldnt look better by being popular or by being some kind of uber cult hit that only 5 people on earth are cool enough to play, or whatever. I'll say it, I liked Xenosaga 1 but hated Xenogears, liked FF10 but hated 9. Tastes are fickle and random like that, the popularity of the above mentioned shouldnt even be an issue when discussing quality.

The games I mentioned are "cult classics" because they're good. But like you said, opinions are fickle so what's good to you is bad to me. I was just pointing out that popularity has no effect over how good a game is because there are plenty of great games that aren't that popular.
