What is the best PSone RPG ever?

Most people popularized FF7 because it was the first real 3d RPG made for PSone, THAT is why it got so hyped when it came out.

Peace

Does anyone remember the FF7 commercial? It didn't contain any gameplay at all and showed footage from several FMV's which made it look like a movie (it even said FF7, not appearing in theater's anywhere). Then people bought the game and saw the ingame graphics and were sorely disappointed. It was one of the handful of ps1 games that I owned for a while so I played it whenever I could after cool.

FF9. Then comes FF7. I just like FF9 more. The story may not have been good, but that's just it. I LOVED the AP system in it.The graphics were amazing. 1st disk really got me, along with 3rd one. Now, this is one of the most underrated games, but hey, I still like it.

(1)Final Fantasy VII
(2)Vagrant Story
(3)Chrono Trigger (FF Chronicles)
(4)Legend of Mana
(5)Final Fantasy Tactics

I'm not sure if Castlevania: Symphony of the Night counts as an RPG, but if it does, it'd be at #4.

Final Fantasy 9 had a good story, it just focused on the characters instead of events. All of the characters (except Armarant who felt rushed) had their own unique personalities and backstories and interacted with each other in interesting ways. Even the quiet and reserved Freya (my favorite character <3 rat-furries) and Quina had their own roles to play in the war between Terra and Gaia (or whatever your planet is called). The extra event option, while not as in-depth as Star Ocean 2's, helped developed characters outside of the spotlight (like Baku and the gang) and gave a bit more depth than usual.

Final Fantasy Tactics had an amazing story but I've spoojed over it enough in other topics. The game was just so REAL compared to the other FF's. How many other games are about political intrigue and charismatic deception? Tactics was like a cleverly woven tale in a style that combined The Man in the Iron Mask and the War of the Roses. I felt like I was watching real people make decisions instead of goofy anime-like god people with massive swords punching a comet back into orbit or something.

Legend of Mana was another amazing RPG in terms of gameplay; something I feel is sorely missing in modern RPGs. Everyone's like "LOL STORY SUCKS" but once again Legend of Mana focused on interaction between characters rather than a string of events which probably contributes to it's little popularity. All of the side stories were great especially the Jumai/Jewel-Thief sidestory and the one starring that bardic Centaur.

The gameplay in Legend was fantastic as well. Console rpg's rarely give you great freedom in how you customize your characters, but Mana allowed you to choose a name, weapon speciality, learn a vast skillset, craft your own weapons, magic, items, fruits, and even BUILD AND PROGRAM A ROBOT. How many rpg's let you actually CUSTOMIZE YOUR OWN PERSONAL SIDEKICK???

Outside of a few indie PC games like Geneforge, very few.

Thousand Arms is damn good. FF series too. One game that is undrated as anything is Legia. Love that game. Its turn based fighting but you choose how to attack, high, left, right, and low. Depending on the order of how you make them activates some sweet moves including hyper moves. It's fun, hard, and probably rare. Check it out though, Legia

Legaia had great systems but the game itself was flawed. It was pretty ugly (even for the time it came out) and the world was rather uninteresting. I praise it for trying new things and putting a spin on generic rpg boring battles, but it was just a rather bland game in my opinion.

Thousand Arms was pretty good. It's one giant anime cliche but the whole dating system and style was so offbeat I couldn't help but love it.

I played Thousand Arms a long time ago (copied) and then found out there was a second disk (which I didn't own) so I threw it away. My sister ended up buying it for me on eBay but I still haven't beat it.

Great game, though.

Nice to see so many other people like Legend of Mana. It's one of those games that you never hear about.

Final Fantasy 9 and 7 . FF8 wasn't that great in my opinion but was worth playing.
I haven't played any other PsOne Rpg i think, oh yeah and Digimon World 3- It's pretty nice rpg too.

I see that everyone is calling each other Gay, did ya know that most people who call people gay are trying to hide their Gay-ness...
FF9 used to be my fav FF, but know i like 7 Oh yeah, DIGIMON world 1 is soooooo amazing!

Wow el felixio, way to look back about 3 pages and bring up something completely off topic and stupid. Congratz.

[ontopicpart]I've never played FF9 all that much, probably the first hour and that's about it. I'm pretty sure I've got it lying around somewhere, I think I'll give it a try some time, seeming as I hear random people saying it was underrated. (I'm sure it got an 8 out of 10 or something)

Something I wrote in an article about game design don't, which will probably never see the light of day as the Ezine appears to be dead.

What is this, a Daycare?

I was about halfway through the Playstation game Legend of Legaia when the spiky blue-haired hero announced he was thirteen years old. I shut off the game in disgust and didn’t come back to it for weeks.

Commercial game characters are young and male because their target audience is young and male, and some marketing executive somewhere decided that a young, male hero (accompanied by one or more scantily clad female heroes, see Leave Your Hormones at the Door) was more appealing to that audience.

That may or may not be true, but the idea of a barely teen boy having the skills, dedication, and time before curfew to save the world is ridiculous. I suspect you’re noticing a theme here, but the object of a role-playing game is to get the player to suspend his disbelief and immerse himself in the story. Anything that rings this blatantly false is going to make that hard for him.

Take into consideration your story when selecting the ages of your heroes. Do you want someone who is good with a sword? Then he’d better be at least old enough to have been swinging one for a few years. A battle hardened warrior? He’d better have been out of diapers long enough to have participated in a few.

Young heroes as explained by the story (and with the appropriate level of skill) are fine, if a bit on the tired side. Young heroes with masterful weapons skills and world shattering magic are not.

That one line ("Hey, I'm thirteen!") more or less destroyed any and all enjoyment I could have gotten out of that game.

As to the earlier discussion that was deleted, I do apologize, I missed the first instance of the word "gay." However, that does not excuse the childish name-calling that followed. We are all old enough and mature enough to not indulge in that sort of antics.

Also, I'd like to say there are two ways to measure the "greatest" game. There is subjective, in which one or several people choose a game as the greatest based on opinion. That's why my least favorite PSX RPG (Chrono Cross) has appeared as someone else's greatest game. Then there is objective. There is really no other objective way to measure how good a game is other than sales figures. You can't objectively compare gameplay (other than number of features, which tells you nothing), graphics, or story. Rankings of those will always be subjective to some extent. You can quantify number of copies sold, resale value, and amount of money earned.

Review median(like that found on the site metacritic.com) is about as close to objective quality as one can get, but its still pretty flawed. Its closer than sales figures for sure.

I don't like review median either. It's used on quite a lot of sites and even then it is, as you said, flawed. I believe the best thing to do in case of reviews is to find a reviewer whose taste and opinions match your own and take it from there.
