i'm looking for something with some fighting in it... with a little bit of comedy... but good.

my current favorites are:

getbackers
hajime no ippo
baki the grappler
kenichi

you guys know of anything to fit in those categories???
(yeah boredom is taking over)

I'm currently watching Noir, which is pretty damn awesome. Even if you don't like the story or the incredibly beautiful art, even if you've got a heart of stone, you have to watch this for the soundtrack. Of course, you'll probably end up liking more than that, but the soundtrack is just SO GOOD and the story's not bad either, and the backgrounds are some of the prettiest I've seen. It feels a bit slow at times, but then you have the (incrediby well done) fast-paced action scenes that completely balance it all out. It's kinda spiritual at times, but it doesn't beat you over the head with it or anything.

All in all definitely one of the better shows I've watched recently, and definitely worth a look.

I got through Elfen Lied just recently. Some of the dialogue was pretty cheesy, the nudity was excessive. Other than that, it was pretty interesting. Short. Had a good ending.

did you watch it in japanese? the english translation was doped up a bit with a bit more modern vernacular so it would appeal to americans.

i thought elfen lied was BRILLIANT, although most people state its just LOL BOOBS AND BLOOD

i watched english dub, I never watch anything other than english dub because I can't stand english subtitles because the language is so formal it drivfes me crazy.

Absolutely love E.L. here. Except for the first 4 episodes (just to weed out the "controversy"). Watched the sub though, after that I tried to watch the dub but it felt too awkward.

I just watched an anime again for the first time in ages; "Detroit Metal City". It's hilarious imo, and if you are a death-metal fan you'd probably like it (I'm not a metal fan at all yet I still liked it).

http://animenix.com/detroit-metal-city-episode-1/

It's basically about a nice guy who likes Swedish pop music, yet is secretly the lead singer of a death metal band by night, which he isn't proud of. Profanities fly everywhere and are so obscure it's funny.

P.S. Apparently they're making a live-action movie of it, and Gene Simmons is cameoing in it.

Yotsuba&! is one I haven't seen mentioned that I like. The main character is like 5 years old, and thinks every mundane thing is this grand adventure (Like thinking she's some tough bad guy when she's carrying around a watergun). She's also generally causing trouble for everyone.

Unlike Azumanga, which was made by the same person, Yotsuba is pretty much based on chapters rather than 4 panel stuff. Only a manga though, no anime so far.

Other than that, I'll go with the usual Haruhi and Spirited Away. There aren't really too many others that I like or even watch. I thought the first 14 episodes of Gurren Lagann were okay, if a bit too fast paced near the end of it, but after that I didn't really care for it.

Uuhm... Bleach? (Episode 1)

don't watch bleach. it starts out okay, but ichigo isn't an interesting enough character to pull interest (as main characters go he's SO GENERIC gosh) and after a while it gets the same power-up fetish that dbz had.

and what passes for comedy is pretty sad. it's basically just a lot of reaction shots.

My little brother watches bleach and I personally don't like it at all. I only found one episode that was kind of interesting it was when he fought this guy who turned rose petals (i think) into little dagger sword thingies and he could control them and ichigo's sword turned into this big black sword and he got really fast.

anyway, another anime i forgot to mention was shootfigher. it is only 3 episodes long but man is it good.

Thanks for all the posts, I'll find some of these and watch them. I don't have the time now because I just got into High School so that means LOTS of homework. Thanks again for all the suggestions! :thumb:

After going through most of the 6 pages of this I realize I'm dealing mainly with kids here.

Here's some classics for you to take in:

1. Record of Lodoss War (The OVA, not the god aweful tv series)
2. Space Battleship Yamato (known as Starblazers in the US)
3. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (the first arc of Robotech in the US)
4. The original Tenchi Muyo (Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki) and the original TV Series.
5. Vampire Hunter D (Bloodlust is alright, but the original is still the greatest. Read the books too)

As for more recent animes:

1. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Solid State Society (that's the film).
2. Ouran High School Host Club.
3. Toradora (it's still on actually, probably the most well characterized anime in years. Good pacing too).
4. Azumanga Daioh (although I'd say pick up the manga over the anime).
5. Haibane Renmei

Now as too Western cartoons, whoever even implied that Chowder was good needs to be shot dead. All in all SprongeBOB ruined western cartoons and with little exception we are left with a steaming pile of crap that is being eaten by the retarded characters cheaply spewed out by Nick and Cartoon Network. As for good western cartoons I can only think of 4 that are even worthy of mentining:

1. As someone else implied earlier any Timm related DC project is good. This includes Batman: Brave and the Bold.

2. Spectacular Spider-man. It's well thought out, the characters are for the most part characterized in a complex way instead of cardboard cutouts of stereotypes. The animation style takes a bit to get used to.

3. Avatar: The Last Airbender: Once you get past the anime inspired visuals (which are gorgeous and the Japanese/Koreans could learn a thing or two from them) you are left with a truly great story that ended right when it needed too.

4. Venture Brothers. This show may be more for people in my age group who remember all the tv shows, cartoons and movies that this show parodies.

Honorable mentions:

1960s Jonny Quest
The first half of The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest
Wolverine and the X-Men
Oban Star Racers.

i am 100% that you have never watched chowder because if you had then i am guaranteed you would not have said this

also tenchi muyo isnt really a classic; it was shit imo, the only good tenchi was tokyo and the first movie. universe was a giant circle jerk of action and retarded ass canon filler.

dont be so quick to characterize this site's demographic; while there are a load of youngin's, there are alot of older people here too who understand exactly what you are talking about.

THE FOLLOWING POST IS RATED "ACT LIKE AN ADULT" or "M"

for the horrible japanese anime versions for an adult (or at least 17 yr old based on ur profile >.>)

Despite the reviews I'm giving you for these, they are actually recommendations. I just grew up and don't watch terrible japanese cartoons anymore.
FLCL - For the retarded nonsensical randomness. Think of a Japanese Family Guy type show with absolutely no sense, nor actual plot, and more randomness.
Elfen Lied - For the borderline Emo in you. It's in everyone somewhere, don't deny it... you could just call it Goth if it makes you feel better. Mass murdering and extremely gory scenes of red paint on your screen. Plus random nudity, just because they felt like it.
Ikkitousen (Sekirei works just as well)- For the perverted anime nerd in you. At least you're away from pokemon, but still in ecchi anime nonetheless. If you like lots of pointless fighting scenes involving mainly ridiculously-large-breasted anime girls involving countless ecchi moments per scene, this show is for you.
Code Geass - For the fake complexity in the storyline. This storyline is great! Well... okay that was a lie, much like what most people see when they look at this and see the storyline take place. All in all the show is alright, but overall just go watch something better. If you like to fantasize about using an ability to control people's actions to make you rule the world - and work with terrorists to reclaim japan from the evil USA military 'bastards' who, by next year, will develop mobile robots like transformers (or gundam) and become bent on world domination... then yeah... this is for you -.-
Full Metal Alchemist - For the RPG-style show fan in you. This one, it's alright... there's even a couple movies and the sequel series is currently being aired. Honestly, I don't have a whole lot to say bad about this show... But it's just more directed for preteens who still jerk it to gay spongebob references. Get a more adult-oriented show... porn not intended but not excluded >.>
And now for american-anime type show recommendations, but rather "Do's and Don'ts" for this section.

DO: Watch the boondocks when you get the chance. Great show, funny as hell. And not for babies afraid to hear the "n" word spoken to them... Not that much of a plot, other than an episode-by-episode style.
DO: Watch Family Guy, American Dad, and Futurama.
DO: Watch the older episodes of The Simpsons; anything prior to the past few weeks is basically safe grounds.
DO: Watch anything not animated that is directed at adults. Once again, this does not imply a reference to porn. As well, does not exclude this option either.

DONT: Watch ANYTHING on Disney Channel. Period. Disney is horrible, it has been for years. A few shows are iffy... mostly just suck for all ages.
DONT: Watch ANYTHING on Nickelodeon. Unless it's older. Nick at Night is alright, those aren't horrible cartoons that replaced the bad ones that replaced the ones that should never have been removed in the first place. No information on the non-cartoon ones... Don't have any memory of those as I was too busy not being pathetic.
DONT: Watch ANYTHING on Cartoon Network. Sadly, this used to be one of the better channels, alongside Nickelodeon for general audiences looking for a cartoon fix... Once they stopped airing the shows like ed, edd, and eddy, courage the cowardly dog, and the rest around the same and/or previous time period, it didn't go downhill - it fell into a bottomless pit of horrible. The exception, sort of, is Adult Swim. Adult Swim, to a certain extent is the only thing on CN that you should ever watch. However, if it pertains to anything that you don't normally hear about other than the tv (such as those horrible Tim & Eric shows) - other than squidbillies, just cuz i get a laugh out of how horrible it is at times - DONT watch.

And finally, above all:

DO: Realize that you are now 17 years old, are closing in on true adulthood, and should act as such. Stop watching Pokemon.

This post is in no way meant to offend anybody, and if it does. Grow up, or wait until you are older to realize that you would be in the same situation if you still haven't grown up.

PS. I have a borderline addiction with Venture Brothers... that show is just awesome, for a reason I cannot quite put my finger on. Possibly pertaining to Brock and the Monarch...

imo cartoon network is getting better and better with their shows. Chowder and flapjack are some of the most entertaining cartoons Ive seen in awhile.

from the episodes I've seen of that.... they single-handily made me stop channel surfing to CN altogether.

and from a few of the other shows I've glanced at while they were on the tv as I passed by, they are all going downhill.

but, honestly there is a chance that I just saw really bad eps and really bad scenes of said shows... Cartoon Network may not be as bad as I said, but still I will not watch anymore.

did they get rid of The Fairly Oddparents from Nick yet? That was basically the only show I watched on that channel in the past 2 years... the rest I could care less about, jimmy neutron in a few moments of weakness too.

wtf are you on man chowder and flapjack are the best children's programming on television
they combine the interesting and unique art styles of ren & stimpy with the easily loveable characters from spongebob without any of the extreme disgusting moments (though i own the entire R&S collection i'll admit it was probably a little on the extreme side for 12-year-old me) or the way-too-cutesy stuff.

but you mentioned the fairly oddparents as being good and that has quickly-done dimestore flash animation and usually terrible writing so :/

also there is no age limit on television shows. i'll sit there and zone out on spongebob or foster's home for imaginary friends just as readily as i'll DVR episodes of Rome or Planet Earth. if it's good, visually interesting, or has good writing, why label it with age groups anyway.

btw p.s. the tim & eric GJ show makes me lol pretty often
it's abnormally absurdist which you don't see very much anymore
it's all a matter of opinion ... if a show is still on the air after its freshman season then obviously it's good enough for SOMEONE to enjoy it!

p.p.s. code geass can suck a dick (heh)

HOLY SHIT yes this. THIS SO MUCH. I watched one episode of that show thinking it would be lol worthy and gatdamn i wanted to break my tv from the horrid puns and repetition of corny humor.

and yeah ikkitousen and code gREES were pretty bad imo.
