What Anime would you recommened???

you have to realize I'm closing in on 20 years old, so Fairly Oddparents, which was something I enjoyed in the past, still makes me chuckle. I never liked spongebob. Ever. End of story. I can't stress how much spongebob annoyed me. I don't watch much in terms of cartoons anymore. And I only catch segments of these shows. (segments != a few seconds btw)

And while technically I never said oddparents was "good", I'm not denying the fact that I can stand watching it, and get a few laughs out in the process. I just said it was the only show I've actually sat down and watched a full episode of in the past 2 years.

But no matter, the point that I was trying to make with my original post was that the thread starter needs to start watching more mature cartoons than pokemon. Pokemon is great if you are 12, but when you are 17 and in high school...

Tim & Eric Good Job just looked retarded from the commercials, and while they were meant to look that way, it was just so bad I don't want to even give it an honest chance, heh. I'll try it I guess.

I guess everyone has their vice. :fap:

PS. I'm not much on "stupid humor" type comedy shows. Family Guy, Futurama, and American Dad are exceptions. And Boondocks is more children doing stupid acts than it is "stupid humor".

Lets see....

Haruhi
Code Geass
Rurouni Kenshin
Hare+Guu
Digimon s1, s2, s3
Pokemon s1, s2, s3
Yugioh
InuYasha (though the manga would probably be better since it's COMPLETE. But not a bad anime)
I totally got more but I don't really know what to name...

What we need:
Fairly odd parents anime
Dexter's Lab Anime
A better PowerPuff Girls anime

why would we need any of this :|

Fairly odd parents and dexter's lab (so help me god if they touch dexter) would not work very well as animes and as of five minutes ago i was unaware of the existence of "powerpuff girls z" but now i am completely disgusted.

How about DDS? (Dan's Detective School, Amirite?), it's a pretty cool anime full of murder case investigations and such.

also, try Chronicles of Tsubasa

Not a really known anime, but still worth mentioning : Crystal Blaze. It's sweet & short, with a very good story. Although it doesn't have Elfen Lied's level of depth, it's still quite original, and very interesting.

this thread needs more gundam.

Zetta

Turn A

All good stuff. Code Geass needs more love here... it seems that as soon as one person says it sucks everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon.
Once the noglestia goggles are off, my childhood favorites weren't really all that great. :eek:uch:

or maybe I'm just wrong.

Edit:
Oh yeah! how could I forget Gurren Lagann?

I think this is more a matter of preference.

It's on okay anime, but it gets way too much credit than it should IMHO. I'm more biased towards a majority of anime that are no longer worth watching - I grew out of that phase.

If you'd rather some more adult-oriented and serious anime, I can recommend quite a few titles.
(For your convenience, I'll put samples of each below so you don't have to go hunting far.)

Watch Monster if you want a serious plot and drama with no super powers or inhuman abilities and a villain who is a truly menacing adversary (fair warning, it is in the process of being dubbed but has not yet been released yet).
Watch Paprika if you'd like a semi-serious plot with plausible semi-inhuman abilities and powers.
Watch Gungrave if you'd like a serious plot with a heavy dose of surrealistic and inhuman abilities (and a lot of action).
Watch "The Place Promised In our Early Days" and Princess Mononoke if you'd like human (or mostly human) people in surreal or fantasy situations (former being a sci-fi slant and the latter being a fantasy slant).
Watch Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex if you'd like to watch peak-of-human-condition with surreal situations and heavy political intrigue.
Watch Jin-Roh: Wolf Brigade if you'd like to see an interesting view of a police state and much ado about the choices and consequences of a civilian "peace officer" in a world gone violent.
Watch Zipang if you like historical entertainment with a twist, "realistic" (har) time travellin', and well-planned 'what if' historical scenarios.

Also:
Serial Experiments Lain, Cowboy Bebop, Noir, Ergo Proxy and Black Lagoon, Darker than Black, Paranoia Agent, Witch Hunter Robin, Wolf's Rain, Speed Grapher, Appleseed and the original Ghost in the Shell.

The .Hack series isn't horrible if you can stomach the fact that it more lumbers than moves about its plot. You were forewarned. :P

I make no claims that you'll enjoy any of the anime on this list as it'll come down to your personal tastes but I will stand by my selections and say that they are high-grade and adult oriented.

If you're looking for something you've probably not seen yet, give me a few more nights and I'll try to recall some of the older and more curious stuff like Twilight of the Cockroaches, Galaxy Express 999, and Cyber City Oedo 808.

Everything seems to be better when you were young. That's not to say stuff these days are going bad, just tastes change. Or not. To each their own.

Personally, I think these new comic book hero TV shows look awful. Batman: The Brave and the Bold's cartoony style just isn't as personally appealing to me as the old Batman: The Animated Series of '93 and the Adventures of Batman and Robin that followed. The visual style used in Brave and the Bold is too reminiscent of the campier Adam West Batman series, which is just too hard to take seriously. It's too different from the Batman comics in style. Batman Beyond actually felt like it caught the style a little better.

Same goes for Spectacular Spiderman. I don't really get what is up with the cartoonier style. I think the only comic based cartoon that wildly changed its style that I actually found interesting was Teen Titans (the terrible fugtastic anime transformations and annoying, earbleeding opening song aside), mostly because a show about Robin and the lesser known Titans seemed interesting. Its very childish approach to most of its episodes complimented the art style very well too.

The Batman bothered me at first as well, mostly due to the unusual portrayal of the Joker, but running through some episodes, it was actually okay. Seemed close to the original story as well, or at least the '93 animated series.

These aside, I caught myself watching episodes of Justice League/Unlimited every now and then.

Err, back to anime.

I haven't watched one I'd bother watching again. That's just how it is for me, but off the top of my head and among those I'm currently watching, let me run some titles by you.

CANAAN - Gundam 00 aside, this is probably the only anime I've seen in recent memory with a main character of middle eastern descent. Not a huge deal, really, but you see how much terrorism has influenced people all over the world, post 9/11. This anime is actually all about terrorism, infused with a little sci-fi. The story, at least for now, is set in mainland China, which is a refreshing change of pace for anime in modern settings.

Eden of the East/Higashi no Eden - I was a big Honey and Clover fan. Character designs aside though, HnE was nothing like H&C. Eden is more of a mix of the Bourne Identity and a social/philosophical commentary on modern Japanese society. Personally, I found the story engaging although lacking in the end. I'm waiting on the movie to come out and get subbed so I can finally watch how it really ends.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - Moving away from the fantastic, Tokyo Magnitude's story is something a little more realistic. It details the story of the survivors of a huge earthquake in Tokyo, mostly, and is apparently based on events of a real major earthquake in Japan several years before. I've yet to actually sit through the series, but it looks fascinating enough.

K-On! - Hailed as many to be the spiritual successor of the likes of Azumanga Daio and Lucky Star, K-On! is a series based on a popular panel comic in Japan. There is no story, just short episodes of the every day life of four high school girls who decide to form a rock band. If you dig A) the all too Japanese humor of Azumanga and Lucky Star B) are into jailbait-ey cuteness C) and are likely to start singing into what may just be the cutest/catchiest J-rock music I've ever heard (I don't listen to J-rock, go figure) then this is probably your thing. If not, do not touch this. Ever. You will thank me for it.

If Code Geass wouldn't be all YEAH TEENAGERS I would have enjoyed it way more.
The character design could have been much better too.

But hey, they wanted to target as much people as possible with this and sadly many people like those "flaws" I pointed out,
you can't really blame them.

Actually, I don't get the YEAH TEENAGERS thing they pulled, either. I'd understand how some kids might be involved in a war, considering how desperate the elevens must have been fighting off an obviously overwhelming Britannia, but when your whole army and even the Rounds themselves were little kids, the war itself took a less serious turn. But considering CLAMP (Card Captor Sakura, Chobits, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, etc) was behind character designs and produced by Sunrise (Of Gundam fame, which is also infamous for utilizing teenagers as main characters), I'd expected as much from the beginning. Plus I've mentally conditioned myself to ignore the idea and wrote it off as something that has to be done in any anime, considering its primary audience. The story itself was fascinating, if only just poorly executed here and there.

I recommend Bokurano, the bastard child of Evangelion for having 15 kids to pilot a robot, and note that the robots used throughout Bokurano are not as uber as Gundam, Gurren Lagann and such. You'll really hear the mechs' engines running and of course this mecha drama anime can be a military, politica thriller actually.

After Bokurano, I also recommend Death Note (but not the live-action movies!), Sci-Fi Harry (a step sideways away from mainstream anime art, and it deals on an American loser having psychic powers!) and its relative Night Head Genesis (with better plot dev)

There was nothing wrong with the live action films.
Ive seen the whole anime and the first two films (I havnt seen L's spin off yet)
And Id have to say the films had a far more likeable ending to the original story.

Also I would recomend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Its a bit odd.
But its is also a readly good, action, emotional in a way, and comedy series.

I recommend Bokurano as a manga since I think the anime shortens the story a bit, don't know.
It's great anyways, it does some pretty deep stuff that makes you think while it's also about kids fighting in a giant robot.
So yeah Evangelion 2.0 I guess.
