The sketch thread!

I can't really stick a pin in any one thing. Watch your head shapes. Mindful of angles. Don't over simplify the shoulders. Practice expressions - it's mostly to do with the eyes.

Affirmative. With such limited skills and so little time, I doubt I could do what you just did.

I have like 48 gigabytes of E books on how to draw manga (all of them). Nothing helps me.

My A.D.D. is severely halting progress. Yet I can write huge ass stories for hours. Funny how that works. Thanks Anyway! It's appreciated.

Edit: auto correct really needs to stop assisting me -_-

My brother does a lot of drawing, but even he gets proportions wrong and expressions off.

I took one of his pieces and used gimp to chop it up, stretch, blur, skew, etc to "improve".

Should be obvious which one is before and which one is after. My brother would kill me if he knew I posted this here, but I think it's good for educational reasons (my edits are by no means perfect, it was a quick touch-up rather than a repaint and there's errors all over).

Most often I see drawings with freakishly long necks, heads that are very far forward, eyes that are very wide apart, tall head-shapes and hair partings that do not follow the scalp lines but end up flat-on the image. Low-down ears seems to be a thing I see every now and then.

The trick I use is to mirror my image every now and then and see if it looks weird mirrored. How you see your image mirrored is how others see your image with fresh eyes.

EDIT: The only books I have on drawing are for animals and landscapes. For drawing people, I do an iteration process and slowly refine the shapes I want. I haven't seen a book that describes this method. Primary tool involved is the eraser, you can't be afraid of erasing something.

I love your work starberri! I guess I'm not the only one who likes to draw girls. :D

@Hybrida: Don't rely on those tutorial books on 'how to draw Manga', they're commonly more destructive than they are helpful. The main issue I see is you make your heads way too tall, a head is closer to the dminensions of an upside-down egg, not an upright football. But don't worry too much, this sort of drawing, the drawing the east are known for, even I still struggle with it, and I've been trying to work it for YEARS now, like at least four years.

Here's a very insightful video about art and how might be best to approach it.

I did some new things, I uh... well basically I drew girls.

Doing a MV battler request on RpgmWeb. Going to be my first original battler for MV. I wanted it to be a human, but this was pretty easy to do.
According to my search history, between looking up images of boars and this file's save time, it was a little under an hour.
I could do more with the shoulder and middle bit, but I'm waiting to hear back from the requester before I do anything more with it.

coyote what program do you use for drawing, and if it's photoshop, what brush settings and shit do you use? I can never settle on anything...

I use GIMP. I think MV's style requires a solid opacity bush for most things (although I started out with an opacity-pressure pen setting) Only varying in size. And using the blur tool when I need a shape to have a hard edge on one side, but soft on the other.
The battler is scaled down from the original drawing. I set the scaling interpolation to cubic, that keeps edges kinda soft. I think photoshop has a different name for that, "nearest neighbor" I think.
Matching XP's battlers was much more difficult, took me years to figure out what scale to draw at, and what pen size to use, and how to scale it down and index the colors in just the right way to match the RTP.

I kinda did it all on the same layer, except for some last minute shadows. I can't show what my under drawing looked like. And I did use a warp tool at the end to make it more porky (the bottom one)

Think my problem is that with me using Photoshop, I tend to have my opacity set to pressure, so when lines overlap or I shade an area in, it starts to look kinda' messy... I remember using GIMP a while back, like, YEARS ago... might give it another try some time.

I use sai for most of my drawings. So do most of my artists, who can actually draw, unlike me, who is bad at the draw.

I like to do pencil sketching sometimes, too.

I never thought this day would come, but I've switched out my DeviantART for a Tumblr, thanks to some bullshit clause in DeviantART's terms of service I feel no longer safe putting my artwork there.

So Today I spent 8 hours copying almost 200 different entries, then deleting even more on my deviantART account, it is now mostly barren, sans the exception of a 'farewell' post and some of my old JournalLogs.

That all aside, please enjoy these new arts, finally a colored render of Kara Marx!

wow time to be a SHAMELESS ART FAD and get undeserving attention for shit that takes little to no effort!

Jokes and snide witticisms aside, this was actually my very first delve into chibi unless you count shit like Toddler of Terror or One True Love but I guess I don’t, for me chibi means that from most angles it’s hard to define which is longer, the distance from head to toe, or the different from hand to hand x2.

Took fifty minutes at the most.

We just need to make ourselves… PRESENT-able.

Gosh golly goodness, Limbo is great.

I cleared out my DA gallery sometime 6 years ago. I got 1 thing in it right now for a rpgm club.
I dunno, maybe if I stayed with an art community I'd have formed the habit of drawing on a regular basis.

DA is probably not a good art community.

I want a close-knit creative group of people I know (RL, forums, etc.) where we try to motivate each other and even give out daily themes to try and make something. It would be cool. :D

Yeah, I think if I could find a suitable community for drawing and stuff I'd do it a lot more often and actually show the stuff I do, rather than only once every blue moon (Literally haven't shown anything off here in about... a year?)

That's what I used these threads for, I mean we're all creatives here, right?

I'll agree that DeviantART ain't a great arting community, it, alike my now Tumblr, are simply used as an archive to show my gradual improvement over the years.

Most of my recent art has been SUPER LEWD so I can't show it, but I have been doing pencil sketching pretty often. See I have an hour+ of train sitting each school day, so I tend to draw during this time.

Another drawing I just did of Ex-Gemini. Unlike my previous quick sketch of her, this one emits a bad aura in my room. Killing women, children, and babies is her thing. Puppies, kittens, or anything cute, she'll kill them nice and slow...

I almost regret designing such a controversial character.
Kate: I wanna play with your intestines. Come here daddy. I'll rip them out.

Tyrell: Umm, Kate do you wanna go to the beach? I'll take you there if you leave me intact.

Kate: Okay, cool. I'll turn the water into blood and decapitate every woman and child in sight. Don't worry father. I'll resurrect them after I'm done having fun.

Tyrell: Just be sure to memory wipe the resurrected people and everyone who sees your actions. We don't want to give people PTSD.
