Okay here's the first ever map render:
3drendermap.png

What happens is I produce these renders that show the basic layout of the map, this is sent to the artist to draw the background onto, background is then used in the map.

Map data still holds the vertex information though, this will be used for collision detection.

Blue line is the horizon.

@TheScripter: Well, maybe something like close-up bushes or grass in the very front of the image to add a dimension to the scene, which you'd have room for if you moved the ground up. Of course, you always have to be careful with things like that to make sure you don't clutter the screen, buts its an idea.

Well I moved the grass up a bit (thanks for the critique fox5) and I made an attempt to add perspective. Does this look any better:

Thanks again for all the help!

@the scripter: that looks a LOT better. It actualyl looks like a forest scene. The roots/trunk/bottom of the tree looks very meh, though, as they just sorta cut off into the grass (and does the trunk actually widen a bit as it goes up before thinning?). I'd recommend some more like grass that is half transparent to cover up a little of the tree roots, so that it sorta blends into the ground. Not sure if i stated that particularly right, but yeah.]
Nice use of darkening the trees closer and lightening the treets farther away.

Thanks for the input! I tried my best to blend in the roots with some taller grass and this is what I came up with:

Please tell me if you can see anything else I can fix! Thanks!

I think this screen is 1000 times better than the first one you showed up, there's alwasy room to improve, but I guess it's good enough now :)
I would leave it like that.

I look at both TheScripter's screen and neo rpgomaniak's screen and see painfully obvious use of default Photoshop brushes. People who don't use Photoshop probably won't mind, but you might want to at least look into getting different brushes somewhere so it's not quite so recognizable.

While I see painful use of default brushes, and I recognize them, I think it's more painful because a simple texture would have been better than an actual shape, for the uses they gave them. Leave facing random directions with no attachment to the tree are a no-go, as are random floating clouds of stars.

This is like the one of the best graphics design in RM ever.
Every single graphics fits with other.

I just ADORE message window.

DUDE THIS IS AMAZING.

YES, OH MY GOD, YES!

... I really do love the style and how everything just fits together so well, it's amazing what you've done and as you know I'm really excited for this, lol.

I wonder...could you somehow apply the hq2x filter to the graphics, then do some minor touch-up work from there? If the low-resolution graphics are indeed the result of a miscommunication as you said earlier, this might be a way to start making it look a bit higher quality. Anyway, looks great as it is; I'm sure we all look forward to your release.

That looks amazing, MigratoryEagle! Everything looks like it matches perfectly, and the game looks like its going to be fun. xD

Great work MigratoryEagle and good luck on further maps! I can't wait to see more.
