Almost no game looks good with the default RPG Maker XP font.
It's legible. That's all that matters.
Lots of fonts are legible but look really bad. It's not too difficult to find a font that is read easily and also looks good. Fonts like "Stencil" and "Curlz MT" are legible but would look horrible in an RPG Maker game.

A mockup of my game:

Here are some experimental screenshots for my game.

title.png

The title screen. It's supposed to be the inside of a book.

magpie.png

No reason for posting this one. I just think it looks pretty.

blacken.png

I'm playing with using a vignetting effect for all of the flashback scenes. Also there's a typo here :(

courtyard.png

Another flashback screenshot.

victory.png

You start off as a little boy. The game follows the kid's life as he grows into a man.

headboy.png

The long grass here is pretty terrible.

worldmap.png

An early world map. I'll pretty much be an old parchment map of the continent the game takes place in. The bird will act as a kind of symbolic navigation cursor (the game has a theme of "freedom" to it), and as you open up new areas, you'll be able to travel to them and such. This isn't finished yet.

@Twirly:
That looks real nice. Is it even made in RMXP?

@blueperiod:
Nice mapping you got there. The title screens looks neat. Is the game based on a novel??

Impreza: Sort of. In the game's history, an aging mother writes a book (a biography of her son, the main character) and the game is basically the book itself. It's her retelling of her son's life. I don't know if it makes a lot of sense to anyone else. But yeah, thanks!

That's kinda cool, if you can get the animations fluid enough. AGM I'm guessing?
Nope, agm has no mouse controls, so I won't be using it :/
I will be using multimedia fusion 2 for this :D (Easier to use than gm and has more possibilities (and effort) than rpg maker or agm)

blueperiod: I can't tell where land ends and sea begins on that map. I really can't tell what anything is, actually. It's a nifty idea, but the land, mountains, lakes, etc. need to be more defined and stand out more.

@blueperiod- I like that map. However, my suggestion is to make the lines more bold, it's a little hard to see. And shouldn't the compass be in the corner?

@Twirly-Nice. Looks like Cave Story, baby!

blueperiod, that is the first time I've seen a "night" screen tint done well in a long time. thanks for not deciding that to depict darkness you need lots of blue and incredibly poor visibility.

It looks like it could just be a cloudy day, though, imo.

I would like it a little darker. 34 for each tint.

Very cute charsets though. With the barets. <3

Don't mind the facesets. :3

@ Twin Matrix - That photoshoppy menu doesn't seem to fit the main game in my eyes, I think you should drawn a menu yourself based on the other tile sets with the same kind of darkness to them, menu seems too happy for my liking and doesn't reflect your maps. (Obviously your planning it though!)

I think he means the bevel effect is a bit obvious. It's not too bad, and I think the menu looks pretty good with the game, doesn't stick out in a bad way at all. There's a few things I would tweak though. Maybe it's just my hate for Times New Roman but I'd change the font on the left. The information on the bottom isn't really necessary as it's simple enough to navigate a menu, but it's nott really that in your face very much so it's not that big a deal.

Looks interesting. However, it looks like the big tree is floating on the flowers in the first screenshot.

There might be a small mapping error somewhere on this map, but I think the resultate ended up pretty well. Everything that's missing now is some fog effects and animals.(For those who have sharp eyes, you can see there's a cat in one of the windows.)
