The Screenshot Thread

If they were put there by hand they'd be in soil, but they aren't, therefore suggesting they are wild.  It's pretty easy to gather from the screenshot that it isn't planned to look like that..

No but I have a judgment and based on a number of factors I can help you through my thought process.

1) Read the reaction of the screenshot poster to my comments.  He seems in agreement with what I said and is appreciative of the feedback.  Seeing as he is the designer I assume he knows his intentions and they seem synonymous with my judgment.

2) Look at the screenshot.  There seems to be no order in both symmetry, colour or breed of flower based on it's positioning.  It also has no other aesthetic supplements around the area which you would come to expect if someone had taken the time to singularly plant those flowers.

3) Unless the gardener opted to cover the soil with grass with I'd suggest is less common than common, again they are wild.

4) It seems to be down by a river and taking plant species into a general classification they tend to be able to breed around water more easily than say an urban area.

5) Even if the above 4 comments are all wrong it still looks visually shit so my intended suggestion get more natural clusters with less orthodox spacing would still be a good suggestion.

What are your opinions on improving it?

This looks fine. http://www.destinacije.com/Slike/Irska/ ... Garden.JPG

... But I can see soil under the majority of those plants... the ones I can't I assume are due to the perspective.  Also for the most part there is a clear arrangement, usually rounded with further flowers in the middle.

On top of that, that's real life, rmxp uses a grid based tile-system which makes things look too uniform.

There is clearly consideration for what's been planted and where in that picture as well as consistent colour schemes, nothing like the screenshot.

You would not be able to see the soil on the RMXP map due to the perspective. If you looked at the same plants in that photo from bird's eye view, you would also not see it. Color schemes is just an aesthetic consideration. I am saying that it is entirely reasonable that someone could plant flowering bushes in a pattern like that, regardless if they are pleasing to the eye or not. Don't be so quick to jump to your assumptions, is all.

I think you would be able to see the soil in rmxp (particularly with the tulip like flowers) and I think the inclusion of soil would go a good way to showing that the plants were planted and not wild.  I have done this myself and personally feel it's  vast improvement.  It may not be 100% necessity in life but seeing as this is a sprite based game it isn't so clear what some things are meant to represent.

Once again, I'm not saying your concepts are an impossibility but I made a judgment as is natural based on the evidence and general insight and seemingly made a correct one based on the respondents reply.  I did be sure to say "flowers don't GROW like that.  If I had jumped the gun he'd simply have said "actually they are planted in that manner".

Thou art all teh talented..
Must say I quite like the wings, Keinaru.
I hope the sparkles are really smooth, not like an autotile or ordinary event..
That'd be cool.

@Dann..
Do you have AI for the chess pieces, or do you have to move them.. or what?
It'd be a friggin big job to script chess into RMVX.. (XP too)

I'm just messin around with picture effects..

@keinaru: Hmm those wings remind me of Folklore! Which is a good thing! Sweet as good work!
Also I've never actually seen anybody use flowers up in a tree before They look better than I thought they would... not that I ever thought of it though.

@Dann- Ah I remember trying to make a chess game when I first started XP and couldn't. Ah how simple it seems now...

*looks at blank rmxp canvas*

Hmm must resist temptation....

@Samot: Is that the RTP water? If so that's rather smexy compared to the XP. (except the sand run up part)
Makes me want to actually look at VX... Maybe.

Who said I was scripting a chess minigame?

Alright, I'll clear everything up.

I remember, years ago, while on holiday I saw a huuuuuge chessboard with massive chess pieces.

Then a short while ago, I saw a chess piece spritesheet on the Spriter's Resource and thought it would be awesome to have a giant chessboard somewhere in my game.

It's just for show. I'm going to have a "castle garden" area in my game and thought a king-size chess board would look good in there.

No-one said.. that's why I asked.. =]

@UltimaOdin:
Yeah, that's the RTP water..

@everyone else who responded to my previous (woods) map
Arigatou for the constructive feedback..
I'll try and change the colors of the houses to match everything..
