The charachter doesn't fit in whith the rest of the tileset because it's brighter and has a darker outline but appart from that it looks good, the mapping is good but look at the shadows under the trees, the one to the left has part of the shadow missing and the one towards the top has part of the shadow that is darker. Also the bottom of the cliff to the left of the stairs looks odd. Yeah i'm sad enough to notice stuff like this...

Aran, it looks nice.  The one thing I would say you should do is to make some rocks overlap the bottom of the cliffs.  At least for me, I can see the line where the cliffs end and the other rocks begin.  If you overlap the rocks with the bottom of the cliff, I think you can create more of a finished and merged look.  In addition, at the bottom where the cliff meets the long grass, you should have some long grass overlapping the bottom of the cliff.

@Simacir: I've gotten that a lot about my character's outline...  And I see what you're talkin about with the cliff next to the stairs and I didn't even notice that I had clipped the shadows.  I'm going to keep your name down for when I need a Beta Tester...

@Bael: I see.  Yeah, I've just been lazy.  I do believe that the cliff bottoms need to merge a little better.  And I'll definitely take the long grass into consideration.

Thanks, peeps!  This is the first time I've gotten some really good feedback on a screenshot, I think...

Anti-Alias...

Ah I see. Forgive me I'm not used to professional art programs so the terminology isn't familiar. (I do all my work on MSPaint)

Fuff your screenshot..tis empty

You need more rocks, closer walls, variations, etc. I think there are tutorials to help you improve, and an improvement thread just for tileset making.

So with the quarter over I have time to RMXP again. I've been trying to drastically improve on my art a bit and here are the results thus far. Two screenshots of the same cutscene, two different art styles. First is the older one made months ago, second one is the newest one made yesterday.

Old screenshot:

New Screenshot:

I have to agree, definitely go for the new style.

The screenshot thread is booming XD

@Fuff: No way! That's a no-no! Well, first read some mapping tutorial. A normal cliff doesn't square like that. Make the map smaller and fill it with some rocks, stalagtite, stalagmite, etc. And just by the looks of your map, if the two kobbold are the enemy, the player will EASILY run past them as the map was very "open"

yay someones usin' part of my tileset/ charactersets! ^^

I'm guessing something not very nice happened there.
The lighting is a nice attempt. Try seeing if you could make it glow a bluish tone since all the light sources are blue. I also think that the first screenshot the light wouldn't be able to been seen past the tall column in the upper righthand column. I'm not sure..

i agree with kiera, noobo.  i think your screens would benefit greatly by adding a glow to each light instead of just 'cutting out' where the lights are shining.

I really love the atmosphere that you have in this game. It's so serene, but with a sense mystery and suspense. It's probably just me, but just thought I would say that...ANYWAY!
I really like the mapping only issue I have is that some of the long grass is really blurry.

Thanks. :) And yes, I do have to to fix the grass up sometimes, heheh. I kinda just... stretched it in photoshop and slapped it on the autotile template. ::noobface::

Thanks guys for the comments.

I think softening the edge of the light a bit would also be beneficial; making it more like light is being spread out instead of suddenly cut off. Smiley I like the idea of its mood though.
Do you have an idea of what brush I should use?
I use Adobe Photoshop 7.

MS-Paint is not an excuse, and anti-alias isn't an art program term, it's a pixel-art (and general art) term, along with dithering.

http://lonelypinkelephants.com/pixel-art this page (one of the first things that came up in google) as a good example of things that can be made using MSPaint. As soon as I can I'll see if I can find you a guide to anti-aliasing by hand, but right now I'm waiting to be picked up for work.

I think that while you're quite good at drawing in MSPaint now, you can benefit greatly from learning some pixeling tricks of the trade.

EDIT: Actually, here, found one that should work. http://gas13.ru/v3/tutorials/handmade_antialiasing.php
