The last film you saw

Mind Game. I actually rewatched it; I'd seen it a few years back, but I was reminded of how fucking great it was. Genius, even.

The best animation movie I have ever seen, and will have seen for a while I think. I don't even know where to begin. The sheer richness of the characters (every character's life story is told within the timeframe of the movie, all the tiny details, the choices, their hopes, their lies, their failures, etc., although its up to the viewer to piece them up together, the movie doesn't spoon feed you), the brilliance of the visuals (it doesn't show right away, but trust me, it's visually one of the craziest, weirdest and sexiest anime), the choice of music (grooving bass to light samba to bach well tempered clavier to electro...), the directing (whoever did the editing was a fucking genius), everything is just better than anything I'd seen before in an anime movie.

And then the story, dialogue, etc., themselves. Really, really good stuff. To give you an idea of how crazy the movie is, here's a dance scene, and here's the sex scene (pretty much sfw btw, it's all metaphors and stuff, I don't think you see anything):

Anyway, those are the crazy bits. I mean, the whole movie itself is freaking crazy (the death scene, the god scene, etc.), but these are particularly wild, and this choice of eclectic, multiple animation styles that blend and segue into one another fits perfectly with the movie's theme and message.

EDIT: Yeah I posted the same thing in the Anime discussion thread, but this is more than anime it's freaking amazing! Watch it!

oh hey cool. i've been in the mood for animated goodness but all i've been finding lately is animated badness.
not ... the slang version of badness, which is its own antonym but
uh
anyway i'll check it out if i remember this weekend!!!

sunday i saw Predators.
ok it was no artistic achievement. nothing fresh or innovative to cinema, no cleverly written characters, several GAPING plot/logic holes, not much of a story outside of what can be described in a few terse sentences.

but i liked it quite a bit anyway! it reminded me a lot of the first one. actually it was almost entirely the first movie except with more than one badguy and set in a ... slightly different backdrop.

laurence fishburne is in it, which i didn't know about, but he's only one of two strong actors in it and wasn't in it enough :(
adrien brody surprised the hell out of me because i thought he was a REALLY bad pick for it but he turned out to really carry it. though sadly, no horrible austrian accent to poke fun of :(

alien designs were cool, if somewhat nonsensical. graphics were pretty good. the deaths weren't over-the-top enough.

but if you're a fan of the series or of robert rodriguez then you won't be disappointed.

also saw x-men origins: wolverine finally.
jesus christ that was amazingly bad
like not quite bad enough to enjoy for "wtf" purposes but
not good enough to enjoy, period

saw The Road on Thursday.
This is an indie movie about a man and his son surviving in a post-apocalyptean world.
there are no zombies, no soldiers, no explosions.
while there IS action, it is totally atypical. you never expect it coming when it does, and when you do expect something to happen, it doesn't.

it was hugely refreshing.

it was also hugely depressing.

but it's the most (hypothetically) accurate depiction of what such a world may be like.

the actors in it are all amazing. the writing and their reactions to horrific situations will make you actually feel discomfort.

it is not for the squeamish. you see some really awful things. though there's no action-driven gore to speak of (akin to Saw), the imagery is disturbing. imagine what the average person would resort to, in a world gone years without clean food or water, or the means to create any ever again. imagine a world where most of the women and children in it have died and all that are left are the most prepared (living off rations until they are exhausted), and the most insane. and imagine how these people would be changed by the sickness and maladies caused by over a decade of death and famine.

one of my favorite films this year, if not my favorite.

Awesome Bro

So I watched Night at the Museum 2 today for the first time, since it was on Sky Movies...

Hmm... It was sort of on par with the first one although it did have more funny moments in my opinion, like with Vader trying to force choke Kahmunrah, and seeing Octavius (Steve Coogan) and Jedediah (Owen Wilson) with their slow mo action scene where they're stabbing people in the feet, it was like watching a parody of 300... funny.

Yeah I heard how terrible it was, apparently it makes Dragonball Evolution look non-ironically watchable...

I'm not into the anime anyway so I wouldn't even consider watching it...

wasnt the last airbender (the show) american-made and they just did that really trifling thing where they attempted to poorly and cheaply imitate japanese animation with the hopes of wrangling in childrens who aspire to be otaku but are not wise enough yet to tell the difference

also wasnt TLA made by m night shyamalan
was there a twist

Meatball machine. That movie needs to be burned and sent into the deepest reaches of the solar system, an hour and a half of my life wasted watching that -_-

the twist is that he a was a terrible director all along and just got kind of lucky

let me guess
a man(?) spies a lady(?)
she(?) notices
she(?) is upset at first, then allured by the sheer depravity
no, no, she(?) thinks, that's wrong, that's ... wrong ...
and then, subject to her(?) own wild desires, the lady(?) relents and throws open the door to the man(?).
then the plot takes a noticeable twist as we watch a beige-colored snake repeatedly try to get in and out of a rather strange looking cave
a masterful tale of two(?) lovers, caught in the throes of their own indiscretions

watched Inception last night.
in the beginning they really lost me. the events were confusing, sure, but they lost me in that it really felt as if they were cramming wayyyyy too much material into too small a timeframe.
Then, towards the middle-end, things picked up in a big way, and were hugely interesting.
I wish they had not taken the time to sit down and explain everything before they went into the dream.

The main character has some very obvious hollywood skeletons in his closet. The ending takes the most obvious approach. The characters--though the cast is great--are mostly very uninteresting, or make very hollywood decisions and leaps of faith.

It tried very hard to be almost obnoxiously confounding in the beginning, then tried too hard to explain everything in the end.

It was enjoyable, and definitely a feast for the eyes. They explore some interesting environments, and play with your perception pretty often. If you are a whore for catching little details, you will enjoy yourself looking at the thing play out.

I don't know if I can recommend this highly, but it's interesting enough to give a watch, esp. if you can stay awake through the beginning.
