Saddest On-Screen Death

The saddest VIDEO GAME death for me (being the ONLY one I cried at) was Raine's death in FF8. Sure, you never SEE her die, but the whole aspect of her waiting for Laguna to return just makes it sadder than it could be. The ending where Laguna plays with his ring while at her grave is the part I cry at.

The saddest MOVIE death for me (at least in recent history) was indeed, Ofelia in Pan's Labyrinth. Reasons have already been said, basicly.

The saddest TELEVISION death for me was, as originally stated in the original post, Marissa on The O.C... I don't usually like teen drama's, but The O.C. was written half and half. Half the stories were for adults, and half for teens... I fit inbetween the bunch and understood and enjoyed both. The reason it was the saddest, was because it was the reason the majority of people STOPPED watching The O.C., which lead to it's cancellation, which made me sad.

You knew it would come from the beginning but it made no less touching when he does die.

Though it wasn't actually on screen JLo's character's death had me moved. It made me think about how I would feel losing the woman I loved.

"Get...them...home." The last words uttered by Professor Arturo in the second part of "Exodus" as he lay dying after being shot. And the moving memorial given by Quinn, Wade and Remy still tears me up whenever I watch it.

And then the season 5 episode where Remy finally reunites with Wade only to discover what the Kromaggs did to her and then to have her sacrifice herself to save him. I knew the actress Sabrina Lyod would not return but I somehow wanted the character of Wade to have some kind of happy ending but alas my heart was broken.

Basically at the end of Chrono Crusade, you have the heavily developed main characters die. This wasn't a death by sword sort of thing, the secondary character required the main character's life force to stay alive. They died a slow painless death in front of a Sunset in a cabbin, I found it incredibly sad. It's the only anime that's ever made me cry (Tear drop).

I agree with Bridge to Terabithia, it was such a sad death and it left me all bubbley and sobbing.

My list has been updated

Lisa's death was actually quite shocking. When you last see, her, she's having a mental breakdown and she keeps pleading for Harry's help. THEN she starts bleeding randomly from her head, so you know she's possessed. Freaked out, Harry ran out of the room when Lisa asked him to hug her. The last thing you hear her doing is sobbing in the other room.

Angela led a truely tragic life before committing suicide. She was raped by her father while he mother idly stood there. Then she had to watch her mother die in a hotel fire. Needless to say, this made her death quite ironic. She spends the game's time trapped in her self-delusion that her mother is still alive, only to realize with horrifying truth that she isn't. So her suicide by walking up the stairs into the hotel when it's on fire was her final wish to be with her mom.

After James realizes what he did to Mary and Eddy, he simply can't take it anymore. His death was probably the saddest of all of the SH2 deaths, considering he searched the entire town, faced his inner demons head on, only to kill himself over the grief of losing his wife. It was touching when the full letter that Mary wrote to him was read out loud. It made me feel even sorrier for James.

There's more, but I'll add em later.

Okay, somebody here definitely does not watch 24. I have to say that at least 2 of my top 5 were on 24, and maybe one from Prison Break.

Ryan Chappelle - One of the saddest things I have ever seen on TV. At every moment I kept saying someone was gonna come in and save him but they never did. I did actually Cry during this part, the first time I ever cried during a show/movie.

I'm glad someone mentioned this. This is probably the most emotional death i've seen on screen. It still shocks me when I think about it. The producers of the show could not have given a better death/scene to that particular character (Everyone hated him until that scene, and now everyone holds immense respect for him, heh).

Oh and I cried as well.

I think the saddest thing I saw was in FF8

The part where squall gets hit by those Ice shards and starts falling at the end of CD 1 I felt really sad and confused started saying stuff like "why did he have to die and why not Rinoa" argh with Rinoa dead there would be nothing but when I put in CD 2 and found out he's alive I got really happy

Chopper, from Ace Combat 5. Man, that was so sad, and its another step in the game that pisses you off until the end of it. I did feel better when Bartlett came back. Another one was PJ, from ace combat zero. He was actually annoying, but I felt a bit sad. I love the series, but now I know atleast one person will prolly die in Ace Combat 6.

Videogames:

Metal Gear Solid 3:
The Boss's death was so well done, and very sad. And then when you learn about her reasons, it gets even sadder.

Persona 3:
Main character. The way it looked like everything was good again, or even better, and then you just fade away....

Xenosaga 3
KOS-MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS!

Baten Kaitos: Origins
Why did Guillo have to die? Milliarde was a much worse character...

Books:

The Watchmen
Rorschach. He was betrayed by his allies, and could do nothing to stop it. He manages to get the truth out, but his death was still sad. He's still the best superhero ever.

Oh yes, Ofelia, how could i have forgotten that bittersweet death. it was a fantastic movie, and probably one of my favorite (if not my favorite) movies ever.

I agree with some of the deaths mentioned above (like Elfen Lied), so I just have one to add.
Warcraft 3
At the end of the Orc campaign of Reign of Chaos, Grom Hellscream dies by killing the pitlord Mannoroth, saving the Orc race. Not really tragic, it was quite heroic, but that was sad, since Grom was so cool. Also the moment was epic.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance

I think it was quite sad when Raziel was sucked into the Soul Reaver. Especially the words he said at the end:

"The two become one... both Soul Reavers... together... and the Scion of Balance is healed... And I am not your enemy... not your destroyer... I am, as before, your right hand...! Your sword...!"

I doubt anyone's ever seen "Curse of the Golden Flower", It's all in Subtitles, and when the branded mother of the one of the princes and her daughter die after her daughter finds out she's pregnant by her lover who is actually her brother. That was truly epic. The way they died was so stylistic and symbolic. The pregnant girl runs from the room, down the long stair case and is impaled by a sythe right through her abdomen. One of the best movies ever.

Dude, KOS-MOS is so not dead, she's just floating in space forever!

Also, Heavenly Sword -
Kai's "supposed" death. Coolest character ever, and just when I was happy she was getting more screen time, she's running from Flying Fox in absolute terror then SNAP - she's dead, right? Thank crap it turned out she survived, or I might have had a break down.

I'm sorry but I think it would be Daniel in Tribes: Vengeance. It just seemed so sad and trivial what was going on at the time. I know it makes me sound like a nebbish dweeb if anyone else has played that game, they'd know though. The first time you see it, it is kinda shocking.

As far as movies go: The Last Samurai, Hero, and House of Flying Daggers all are very sad death scene'd films.

no, it was hamlet, just I haven't played it in years and all I remember apart from it dying was it's last word "oink" so for some weird reason I thought it's name was oink :)
