Saddest On-Screen Death

Final Fantasy VI...
I don't remember his name man! The black ninja who could always throw shuriken, swords and all the weapon u had in the inventory!

Shadow, his name was Shadow, his dog's name was (oh so creatively) Interceptor. I think General Leo's death was pretty sad too, it adds insult to injury that you play as him JUST BEFORE IT! I had a new hatred for Kefka after that, and the river poisoning scene had me thinking he couldn't get any worse.

Saddest Deaths -
Well, rather than retread ground that has gone before (FF7, etc...)

Danny Vinyard. After finally being convinced by his brother not to follow the same path he did and become a skinhead, Danny is shot in the school bathroom, before turning in his paper that came to the conclusion that perhaps what he was beginning to believe was wrong, and that hatred is baggage.

Wash. Just coming off of a high moment having saved the ship and the crew from a crash landing, only to have the reaver ship spear him though the chest. My jaw dropped and didn't move for an eternity. :: sniffs :: I liked Wash, he was the coolest character in Firefly...

I felt a huge sense of regret during the ending when Robin William’s character passed away. He worked so hard and passionately towards becoming somethingone he wanted to be, that at the point when he was about to finally obtain the recognition he so desperately sought after, he died. Then, followed shortly after by his wife.

(Man, there's a lot of things I want to accomplish in life. I truly hope death doesn't beat me to it.)
Bye-bye butterfree :'(

Oh, another one... Grave of the Fire Flies (IWIN)

Angelica dying at the end as Marco finally went to see her and read the story, while the other girls were singing Beethoven's 9th.

I would have to say Final Fantasy V, VI, and X:

In FFV, Galuf dies. I find that the most saddest because he protected his fellow team members, but ended up dying. He even saved his own blood grandchild. He was also kickarse.
FFV

In FFVI, Cyan's Family death. They were poisoned! Imagine your family dying.
FFVI

DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T BEATEN THIS GAME AND X-2!!!

Tidus is really a dream, and he goes away, forever, until the end of FFX-2 where he comes back in the good ending, but it ruined FFX's aspect...
FFX (DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T BEATEN X-2 YET!)

This wasn't really a death, but they tricked you into thinking it was. When I found Yorda turned to stone, I thought she was done. Ico is really an emotional game. You spend the entire game doing nothing but protecting this girl, worrying about her, and then the games tries to make you sad by turning her to stone. Well, guess what? It worked.
Roxas didn't die, but he was taken away from all of his best friends... FOREVER. Including Axel... who DID die, actually by sacrificing himself to save the person Roxas hated most: Sora. That's real emotional stuff right there.
Actually, NONE of the members of Organization XIII deserved to die. They couldn't tell that what they were doing was wrong; they didn't have hearts! (Which was all they freakin' wanted in the FIRST PLACE!! Sora, you murderer!!!)

One of the most powerful scenes I have ever witnessed.

Castor (Archer in disguise) is going to his boss's funeral. A rendition of the Miserere is being sung, and a single white dove flies by. Archer (Castor in disguise) is sent a picture of the true Archer's son that he had killed years earlier. It's a memorable scene.

Oh I forgot:

Basically everyone dies, but Toboe and the Old Man's death were quite saddening, along with Tsume's little 'talk to the corpse' scene. Very sad :<

I remember for the last 5-6 episode crying at least once each episode. I found that bizzare but really, it was pretty good writing if they were able to keep that going for so long.

Oh that reminds me

This show was so true to life and I guess I was really projecting while watching it. I remember having to like try and cover up the fact that I was crying, during anime club. That was the first season. It wasn't that bad, only did it for one epiosde.

But the second season? Omg, what with Hagu's accident, Morita's family drama, Rika wanting to commit suicide. Shuuji discovering he has feeling for his niece and Takemoto feeling unable to be there for the woman he loved, I was crying throughout the series.

Not to mention the ending because once again it was so true to life, friends going their own seperate ways, making a life for themselves. The realistic treatment of this series is why it's my favorite anime to date.

I'm going with Land Before Time. The first and best one, NOT the fucking abysmal parade of brainless sequels.

The death of Littlefoot's mother at the hands of a Tyrannosaurus Rex ("Sharptooth") was Bambi for a new generation. I read an article about how the producers initially thought the scene was too disturbing and invited a child psychologist to come in and look at it. His advice led to a scene later when an old dinosaur comforts Littlefoot shortly afterward. The movie came out probably only months after my sister died...I can't even describe how much The Land Before Time meant to me, and still does.

I have to completely agree with the MGS sequence........

but also oddly enough, the ending of Outkast's Idlewild....

When Sally dies... oh man... I did not see that coming.... poor Andre 3000.. lol

Also...

Dammit. My girlfriend made me watch it and it was so damn sad when jamie died at the end.... "Her love is like the wind, I can't see it, but I know it's there".... DAMMIT. I held my girlfriend for days and made her promise me she wouldnt die of lukemia...

Chopper, from Ace Combat 5. You just expect to lose him for the rest of the level, but when he reveals that there isnt anyways hes making it out of his fighter alive and crashes into the stadium to avoid killing anyone I wasn't able to say anything I was so shocked.

There are so many good ones, and many of them have already been named so instead of best I will post the last 3 that I saw most recent:

The Departed
When Bill dies, not so much a tear jerker...but more tragic and totally shocking and unexpected.

The Bridge to Terebithia
When Leslie dies...it's not shown..but is kinda totally unexpected (unless you read the book)..and I wasn't happy about it. I cried, and it ruined the whole movie for me.

Walk to Remember
Someone said this one already, but when Jamie dies..I was really brought to tears. This whole movie kinda did me in..Im a sucker for romance and when you mix in some religious factors..it's hard not to be broken down.
My girlfriend also had me watch this with her..as the other person said.

I forget the kids name, because I havn't seen this movie in a while, but when he gets stabbed, it's really emotional.

Technically not on screen, since music doesn't have screens.

Ayreon's death in TFE didn't really get to me the first time I heard it. Actually at first it seemed like LOL PEACE END WAR LOVE EARTH. But after hearing Carried by the Wind and The Dream Sequencer in general, I've not been able to listen to it without getting just a little upset. He didn't change a thing and he died for nothing.

The Mars Colonist. He's travelled to the beginning of time and fact, just wanting to see Earth with his own eyes. He comes so close and then dies.

The Highlander. Seriously, he died and everyone else happily walked on.

Also the pasty. It's gone.
