also why would anyone want to play NES-era rpg's they are terrible, frustrating, time-consuming pieces of crap
Says the faggy little kid who grew up with a Playstation 2. Go play with your playstation you faggy kid you. My NES STILL WORKS and its games are not meant to be played by people who don't like CHALLENGE. I am 1337. Eat me.

also yes i fuxed your post because i am tired and clicked the wrong button.

um??????? first of all I grew up with a Genesis so fuck you?

challenge and flat-out boring, tedious game design are two different things. in order to get anywhere in old rpg's like that, you have to grind your levels forever and how anyone could ENJOY level grinding--much less level grinding with a battle system that consists entirely of "attack enemy, attack enemy, cast ice2, cast cure3"-- is beyond me. some games just don't age well, and this is true of most older rpg's

I agree with luminer, they don't age well, but you still have to understand that, back then, this was all innovation. some people are better able to place themselves in that mindset than others.

mindset or none, i agree that i wasn't even interested in rpg's until they started coming out with complex stories and maps. until then i didn't see the point in them because, even back then, i hated grinding.

dont get me wrong, the nes is amazing (i own one), it had some great games, it's just that grinding is tedious to some people.

oh, I definitely understand that it was innovative back then, and in fact, despite my apparent hatred for them, I have actually PLAYED a LOT of old rpg's and at least gotten CLOSE to beating them. I definitely appreciate them, and sometimes I find them charming, but I'll take anything on the SNES over those anyday.

Anyway, the DS is a gay little gimmick toy and the only good games on it are remakes, I don't own one. I want to though :(

I'm guessing you've never played Elite Beat Agents, Trauma Center, or Phoenix Wright (the DS games are more than remakes imo.)

oh yeah Lennus 1 and 2 were both also amazing rpgs that i would reccommend to anyone.

THANKS FOR IGNORING MY BLATANT TROLL :(

I disliked EBA's song selection(sk8r boi? material girl?! :dead:), but I liked the gameplay; it was nice because I'm usually bad at rhythm games

That's because you and Luminier have no taste in music games, but don't worry scientists are working on a cure!

Here's what you do, don't play those songs, play "ABC 123", "September", "'Makes No Difference" or "Canned Heat". The song selection is pretty kid friendly, but you'll have fun once you learn the patterns and can tap to the beat quickly.

when i was trying to think of a valid response to that i remembered that i could also play final fantasy 5 a hundred times over. (i've played it like 4 times and i still haven't beaten it yet :[)

.....please say you meant VI.

YOU MEANT SIX, RIGHT FAYTE? :(

no. i meant 5. I hated six because i could never, and still never find out what to do when i get to that castle in the middle of the desert at the beginning of the game.

Probably the wrong place to say this, but Jrpgs offer almost no replay value whatsoever. For that you must turn to western RPGs like...well Fallout3 even though its not all its cracked up to be.

same thing happened to me.
i didn't like the game enough to continue playing as the graphics were all sad and murky.

@nikki, i was just explaining the same thing to my friend yesterday as he was talking about replaying FF1. there's almost no reason to play through a jrpg more than once. or even once. not even with 'new game+' (unless its disgaea, but thats not a normal jrpg as it has GOOD DIALOG and actually has original gameplay elements).

*Pulls out his FFIII SNES Player's Guide because He can't remember off hand*

After you meet Edgar, go to the left wing of the castle and speak to the Matron to learn about Sabin.  Go back to Edgar.  After that I can't help much right now.  The guide is very vague.

...replay over and over again? i think there is no such RPG for me...

when i'm through i don't wanna play them again ^^; even if they were great.

That explains a lot, I can count the number of good RPGs on Genesis on one hand and I have to try pretty hard :P

challenge and flat-out boring, tedious game design are two different things. in order to get anywhere in old rpg's like that, you have to grind your levels forever and how anyone could ENJOY level grinding--much less level grinding with a battle system that consists entirely of "attack enemy, attack enemy, cast ice2, cast cure3"-- is beyond me. some games just don't age well, and this is true of most older rpg's
Challenge is not having every turn filled out for you in explicit detail by a dozen NPCs and a blinking light on the map screen, monster fights that are hard and require creative thinking and resource management right down to the 'trash' mobs, and a world that is alien and full of mystery, not tongue-in-cheek gay little references to modernity. Level grinding is for people who are too lazy or have too much time on their hands to actually play the game the way it's intended - only the really, really shitty ones are designed around an expectation of level grinding. Final Fantasy was brilliant though, and the DQ games were by and large very well done. I think in general though SNES was the apex of the RPG, before they started laming them up and dumbing them down to appeal to a broader audience but after they ironed out basic workable game mechanics. You can't tell me that there has been any console that outperformed the SNES though in terms of RPG. The Playstation had some respectable titles, but it's been 90% shit since then.

*laugh* are you allergic to talking to NPCs or something? That's all you have to do, go around talking to a couple people and head back to the throne room. I can't believe you missed such an excellent game for such a simple issue!

@Cruelty: Have you actually played FF1? It has a ton of replay value, since you pick your four characters at the start. There a probably a handful of really classic, easy play groups, then a whole range of challenging combos - 4 fighters, only non-core classes, no fighter, all mages, all white mages. Because the game is so tight on resources and has very straightforward gameplay a change in party makeup can give you a totally new challenge (if you go straight through and don't grind until you're too overpowered to face any difficulty). III also had some replayability in that sense, though it does really break down in the later levels when you get the top-teir jobs. VI had a variety of different challenges, natural magic, no equipment, speed, which all changed the game up enough to make it engaging again, and any of the games with a good plot are worth going back to every few years just for sake of nostalgia (and that's coming from a guy who only watches a movie once and rarely rereads a book). Chrono Trigger had a moderately branching storyline, something like 17 different places you could face down Lavos and 10 or 11 endings IIRC, which gave it massive replayability. The SaGa series had some different story developments depending on which characters you played, how, and in which order, which made it replayable if you could get through the first 100+ hour play. Seiken Densetsu 3 also had 2 pairs of plots (four characters, two major stories) and was totally worth playing at least twice.

Most of the later JRPGs are basically B-movie plots with constant minigame intermissions and pointlessly easy fight sequences you're forced to complete in order to progress the plot, so I can agree with you there.

~Man I just realized I'm being pretty aggressive in this thread, I need to chill out. :D
