Quintessence: The Blighted Venom

Quintessence - The Blighted Venom

Someone did make a moving platform tutorial a while back here. It was actually quite interesting. Of course, you could always use events and make the event graphic a piece of the platform and set it to move. There are quite a few different ways you could go about it.

Aye, I simply used char-sets of the platform in there. Moving them is a no brainer, but RM seems to have a little glitch where two things moving at supposedly the same speed may not go at the exact same pace under certain conditions, which causes the system to not synch.

But huh, there's a tutorial for that, eh? I suppose it's best to try to sway to something different then.

Actually, I made a typo. It's actually a script that does that. However, from what I've heard it's pretty unusable. Anyway...Keep it, Reives. I've never played an RM game with moving platforms.

I think doing it with events is probably the way to go, anyway.

Oh okay, I see. Mm, I'll see I suppose; still haven't decided what exactly I'd do. Thanks for the heads up!

I've been working on a new version of the title theme as a part of the revamp, and I'm pretty much done with it. So without further ado;
Here's the new Quintessence Title Theme:
http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/Quintes ... KReivG.mp3

It is much better quality than the current/old one, which was made with Finale default soundfont (new one is Garritan Personal Orchestra). Also has been extended in content, with additional piano + winds part followed by pizz. strings. And of course, features the main theme tune through-out. c:

To be honest, I'm not really sure which is better!
I personally think the melody sounds nicer without the instruments, but the first one is really somewhat short...
The second sounds more proffesional but has way too many layers...

I agree with KoRP. The melody does indeed sound nicer and comes out a bit more in the old one. The new is a little too complicated or so. Tho some places are better there and the extending you did is pretty nice. :)
However I don't like how the sound completely disappears for a second or so in the beginning, and the drums or whatever they are that come  in right after that, they sound really awkward the first times you listen to it.
So yeah, I'm not sure which one is better. :x

Oh? That's actually quite surprising to me, to be honest. But I see where you are coming from; the old one has a somewhat more "personal" feel to it, simple and to the point. I think I'll get some more feedback on the matter to see what I'll do about it. Thanks for raising the point. http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/forum/S ... _Smile.gif[/img]

We are mainly just talking about before the piano comes in, right? The intro with the string and etc. that is.

More feedback on the preferences would be appreciated in helping me decide what to do with it:

Well, although I like the new one, it seems more of an expansion of the original. What I mean by this is it would seem more impressive if people heard the original first before hearing the new one. But that is just a personal opinion. What I suggest is using the original for the title, and this new one possibly in a cutscene or credits. (I can't seem to remember if you used the title song in the credits, although I am pretty sure you used a different one)

He used drift for the credit which my band and I are currently booking a recordig session for. Althugh we did add an extra verse and change the music a lot. But still your name will be on the cover (Drift: Lyrics writen by Revier)
Anyways the new one is very nice...The string effect works really well.

Yeah, well I love the new theme. Now it has the starting strings part, I'm really pleased.
Although the old one is brilliant, the new one is still cool too. I guess it's just because people are used to it, y'know?

The sound quality is definitely improved in the new version...

...but the melody loses some of its punch since 1) it's not the only track playing and 2) rather than having very distinct, precise notes, they're really drawn out too much (I believe this is called reverb? I don't know much about musical technical terms <_<)

Imo...for the piano reduce the reverb and increase its volume compared to the other tracks and the song will have the best qualities of both versions.

Thank you for the feedback and suggestions guys, they were very helpful. I see what you guys mean now, especially the reverb part. Things just seem to be quite bunched together with a lot of over-shadowing echo, especially when the only reference is the old version without much. I wouldn't use it for a cut-scene, though, as it's strictly made for the title screen and is too varied for a BGM. But I've decided what I am going to do about it:

[First of all, I don't think I've mentioned this here yet, but I'm expecting my EWQL (Symph Orchestra, Symph Choir, RA ethnic instruments and Colossus) packages to arrive on August 2nd-5th or so. For those who aren't familiar with it, it's basically a sound library which plays compositions (using Garritan Personal Orchestra at the moment). And all in all, it will be a massive upgrade as far as sound quality and instrument choices are concerned. Some demos here: http://www.soundsonline.com/EWQLSO-Gold ... PROB1.html ]

So when I'll hold on to this until I get EWQL, and if my computer can support it, I'll be trying to make a version with that. It is much more clear than GPO with the amount of reverb I am using now, and much much better sound overall. If my comp doesn't support EWQL atm, then I'll be changing the current group string sound into solo string sounds, which should give a much more precise and personal sound. Good plan?

Thanks again to all the feedback about it.

[And sure, Windsaver, rock it out. c: Don't forget to send me a recording for fun when you're done! (By the way, it'd be cool if you can credit the original composition on top of the lyrics, noting that it's an arrangement - that way when you guys get famous, I won't get sued. :p ]

P.S. I finished a game-play component update to Chapter 2 today; will probably post info on it tomorrow.

Garristan Personal Orchestra is what I'm using for my own game...haven't heard of symphonic orchestra but you've definitely piqued my interest.

Nice, Kemuri. c: Some people seem to have things against GPO's sounds, I never really understood why - I mean sure it doesn't sound like thousand-dollar libraries, but it really isn't that bad at all - especially when taken into account its relatively low cost. Just takes some manual dynamics mapping and the like to polish, that's all. I'm personally still quite comfortable with it.

Never tried FL Studio before, but seen it being used a lot. I'm guessing it's sort of like Cubase? o:

I completed all of the insertion of the detection mini-game into Chapter 2's escape sequence yesterday. Was a little tedious to do, but thankfully it's all done now:

http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/images/C2Ss2.jpg[/img]

I'm counting on that since each occurrence of it is custom and not monotone, it's not a bother to have it in more than one place in the game. c:

Hm, I can't really say for that, but I'd hope so. It's been quite a while since the last release anyhow, so it might be a good idea to refresh the settle of the story.

The main affected area of changes will be chapter 1 and 2. Game-play will be added, battles will be inserted into places like Korbin Woods (sparingly). The release will certainly include chapter IX as well; which I am about 80% done.

[And if I get EWQL working when it arrives next week, maybe some music revamp as well!]

Edit:
Just finished programming Tiger form's usage in battle - Will post a preview of it in the near future. There will also be an additional form to acquire in Chapter 9.

I'm looking forward to the release.
Is that minigame in chapter 2 like the one from that other chapter? I can't remember if it was 5 or 6. Will the minigame be the only new gameplay in chapter 2? Or will there be more too?

Yep, the mechanics are actually the same. But I think since it is a different scenario/movement pattern etc. each time, it wouldn't be that repetitive.

I hope there would be more game-play than that for chapter 2, as it alone wouldn't be enough. I'll have to see, though, and hopefully I get some ideas and time constraint allows. c:

Will post something about the tiger form thingy when I get off work a bit later.
