Quintessence: The Blighted Venom

Quintessence - The Blighted Venom

Finished the first eight chapters today; eight hours total.

Firstly, let me say that I'm new here; I've always loved making games and hated the actual programming, so RPG Maker XP, and this site thereafter, caught my eye about a week ago. I downloaded the application, played around with it, and, after putting together a suck-fest of a game, decided to sample what the community here had made.
Your game was the fifth. I downloaded it, played the first bit when I could find time, and finished chapter one. How did I find it? At the time, quite average. I thought to myself as I played, "Oh look, there's Kardian, the cutout badass character. Oh look, there's Vikon, there cutout dim-witted comic relief character," and "Oh look, a person who can shapeshift," etc, etc.

Later that night, when I found nothing better to do, I opened it and played it again, hoping to kill some time before I could be tired enough to sleep.
Needless to say, I played three hours of it, and a began to actually get sucked into it. "By golly, why?" I asked myself. "The plot is, so far, painfully generic, the combat is very meh, and the gameplay is seriously lacking. Why is this game so entrancing?"

I then realized that it was because the characters I previously deemed cutouts were, in fact, quite the opposite; I continued to play and, as I was revealed more of their histories, continued to realize that they were actually far deeper than I could readily fathom; Kardian wasn't nearly as badass (which is good, mind you) as his stern speech and overuse of ellipses led me to believe at the beginning, Reivier wasn't just another typical dorky protagonist, and Petal... revealed a refreshingly original twist, which you don't see often.

The plot, while aided by the character's backgrounds, remains unchanged in my eyes, but the presentation of it is very, *very* skilled (creating scenes and explaining them later is not a simple feat, and kudos to you for managing to pull it off -- especially in the quantity with which you use them), and it still has room to grow judging by your projected amount of chapters in the finished product.

Overall, what I'm saying is that while your game would benefit from some more actual gameplay and more depth to the core plot... the characters, their histories, and your storytelling ability managed to lift it up high into a status that would, back in the day, give some commercial RPGs a run for their money.

:straightthumb: Kudos

Thank you for your time and feedback, Citrus. To be honest, I was really glad to receive that post.

Points well taken. Game-play is certainly lacking more than just a little - I have been attempting to insert some content into the first two chapters for the upcoming new release, hopefully they will make a dent in that department. Glad the general experienced shaped up some attachment for you as it went on. As for the initial traces of "cutout" characters, I believe it is mainly a result of dialogues and the like that could've been better, which I am also trying to fix a little this time. A major worry of mine at the moment is the fact that the "game" right now does not take off until later chapters, and that a notable amount of players might drop out before long, especially since the first two chapters have literally 0 game-play and there is no bond formed between player and the story/characters that it depends on.

The only thing would be that I don't think the core story could be changed at this point. In a way, though, I personally feel that it is the details to an underlining plot that is the meat to the skeleton, and all the character's history and the like are all a part of it. Hopefully they could overshadow the synopsis underneath.

I actually had a hard time replying to the post, for some reason. Maybe I'm just sleepy at the moment, heh. But aye, thanks again for the much appreciated feedback, pointers and suggestions. I am flattered.

[Will edit the update in here in a bit as soon as I get it ready, as I promised. A little crammed today, my bad.]
Edit:
Mm, actually, it'd probably be best to make a little vid of it after I setup the in-battle item usage as well, so I'll hold off on that. I took a screenshot of the tiger thingy and uploaded, but it's pretty pointless as a still image - so I'll post this little thing instead:

lol one of the guards looks as they were burning their head with the torch =D Good picture though, looks great! Can't wait for it to be realeased!

I just finished downloading this and played the first minutes of it and my gosh, the intro was smexy. o.o AMAZING JOB. KEEP IT UP.  :straightthumb:

I like your avatar Danny2000. =P

And I've been waiting for the new release for a couple months now...I'm getting ansi.

But it's okay because like most major video games of our time, they make you wait and wait.

Just don't finish the new chapter and then release it like a year later. =P

Thanks guys. I will certainly be trying to get it out before September, but no certainties at this point. While chapter 9 is 85% done, I am not sure how much time the rest of the improvement to early chapters would take. But either way, it won't be that long from now.

And thanks, sunx. I'd recommend to wait for the new release, as there will be a notable amount of improvements then in the earlier parts. c:

I personally liked the fact that there wasn't a lot of gameplay. I'm not very good at video games but I love good stories. The characters each had a little spark. I liked how we played as many different people through  the whole thing.

No worries, the game-play won't be distracting, and will be aimed to allow interactivity rather than brainstorming puzzles. The battle portions are largely voluntary - after level 3, the mandatory battles can be won without the need to level further, although it would be a lot easier (the main difference in battle skills progression would be made with acquiring more forms anyhow).

vikon :D

Oh and Reives, have you decided upon the title theme yet?

Mm mm, about the title theme. . .

So I just received my EWQL stuff (!!!), and am trying it out. Apparently there is some configuration and stuff to get used to in order to make it sound right in old Finale scores, unless I were to use Sonar and stuff for rendering. So I'm trying to make it sound right ASAP while struggling due to the unfamiliarity, but then I got an idea.

Something will be changed about the title theme - the tune will be the same though, of course. I think it'll be an interesting and nice change, but I don't want to say anything certain for now. After I get something audible, I'll post it here and you'll see what I mean!

I haven't had the chance to work with most things yet; the sample library is just vast. Got the Symphonic Orchestra, Ethnic instruments, Symphonic Choir, Colossus and then some; really went all out this time. And there're like 10 gazillion violin samples to choose from alone. It'll take a while to get used to it, and there's more than enough stuff to keep me 100% occupied if I don't be careful; so I'm trying to take it easy. :p But aye, there really is quite a hefty load of supplies at my disposal now, music-wise.

I should be able to post a demo of what I got with the new version of the title theme later tonight! c:
--------------

Edit:
I'm too tired to make a decent description now, so I'll just be brief. This is the new (again) title theme I am working on; made with EWQL stuff. However, I have been struggling with the EWQL mechanics a little as I just got it and am still a newb, so the sounds are not as good as they can be.

The main new step in this is the ocarina carrying the melody in the intro, a.k.a. Reivier. When the intro ends, piano takes over into the melody (Lunair). Figured it's best to have it be at least a little metaphorical.  :P

**This is heavy WIP, so a lot of stuff are missing (percussion, flute hanger etc.).

*Since it's a considerable change and still experimental, some might find it hard to get used to. But hopefully not.

Thoughts and suggestions welcomed as always.

An enhancement of the original with all the unique flavor intact... I like it.

Edit: But on 0:08, the extra note erked me a little, like the posts below me have been saying.

Loving that new chord at the end.
Only thing I dislike is the little miniweirdnoteNOTE thing on the ocarina sound...
Disturbs me a bit. Apart from that a great improvement!
:D

The ocarina sounds a little strange at first (tbh I like the one from the WIP version more, it had a good "indian" or so feeling to it :P also, it sounds a bit more realistic, might be just me though) and am I the only one who thinks the weird loud echo or whatever thing (lol >.>) that comes in about in the middle of the ocarina sounds really awkward? :/
Other than that, fux pro. <3
The piano parts is really really good. :)
What happened to the extension btw? Or are you still making that?

Ah, I'm hoping for the grace-notes to add some ethnic feel to it. I'll try to play around with it to see if it can be made more natural.

The ocarina part does sound more natural on the lower register, and it sounds more like a native flute or something in the second version. However, since everything else is going on in the low end, I had to lift it up a notch to avoid having it sound smeared. Not sure where you mean by that "loud echo in the middle" though, wesley?

Haven't added the extension to it yet; just used the old version of it for template is the reason. There will certainly be stuff that comes after it though!

------------
WIP 3, changed the entrance of the piano to music box/celesta, and piano enters after that; partially as reference to the story:

I don't know why I've never posted here before. I've played the whole game more than once, but I've never posted any comments. I'd just like to say that this is the best game ever made with RMXP and I love it. It has a very solid storyline, music score and gameplay. Well done.

Now that's said, I don't think that the new title theme has enough of the original in it. It's still very good, but it needs to stay a bit closer to the first one. However, I do like how the ocarina starts the piece off.
