Finished the first eight chapters today; eight hours total.
Firstly, let me say that I'm new here; I've always loved making games and hated the actual programming, so RPG Maker XP, and this site thereafter, caught my eye about a week ago. I downloaded the application, played around with it, and, after putting together a suck-fest of a game, decided to sample what the community here had made.
Your game was the fifth. I downloaded it, played the first bit when I could find time, and finished chapter one. How did I find it? At the time, quite average. I thought to myself as I played, "Oh look, there's Kardian, the cutout badass character. Oh look, there's Vikon, there cutout dim-witted comic relief character," and "Oh look, a person who can shapeshift," etc, etc.
Later that night, when I found nothing better to do, I opened it and played it again, hoping to kill some time before I could be tired enough to sleep.
Needless to say, I played three hours of it, and a began to actually get sucked into it. "By golly, why?" I asked myself. "The plot is, so far, painfully generic, the combat is very meh, and the gameplay is seriously lacking. Why is this game so entrancing?"
I then realized that it was because the characters I previously deemed cutouts were, in fact, quite the opposite; I continued to play and, as I was revealed more of their histories, continued to realize that they were actually far deeper than I could readily fathom; Kardian wasn't nearly as badass (which is good, mind you) as his stern speech and overuse of ellipses led me to believe at the beginning, Reivier wasn't just another typical dorky protagonist, and Petal... revealed a refreshingly original twist, which you don't see often.
The plot, while aided by the character's backgrounds, remains unchanged in my eyes, but the presentation of it is very, *very* skilled (creating scenes and explaining them later is not a simple feat, and kudos to you for managing to pull it off -- especially in the quantity with which you use them), and it still has room to grow judging by your projected amount of chapters in the finished product.
Overall, what I'm saying is that while your game would benefit from some more actual gameplay and more depth to the core plot... the characters, their histories, and your storytelling ability managed to lift it up high into a status that would, back in the day, give some commercial RPGs a run for their money.
:straightthumb: Kudos
