Quintessence: The Blighted Venom

Quintessence - The Blighted Venom

Your old Quintessence pictures really arent that bad, it's simply that the new one is positively amazing.

This game sure has become popular since I last left, not that I'm too surprised, the game is amazing. When I find some time, I will be sure to download and play through what I have missed!

Oh, god! Reives, those are just awful! I can't believe you went from that to your current glory! It's amazing is what it is!

I love how the texture of the ground in Kardian's cabin gives it the impression that it's melting. XD

Seriously, though, it's amazing to see that Quintessence, one of best games on RMXP.org, nay, one of the best in the whole RPG Maker XP community was once nothing more than a pitiful little project on par with some of the worst games in the early projects forum. It's inspiring, to say the least.

Are you looking at the same screenshots as I am? 'Cuz, the ones I'm seeing look like crap. No matter how you look at 'em. In fact, I tried looking at them with my eyes closed, and they still burned. Uh, with all due respect, Reives.

@Injury and Erich:
Thanks. :p You're being too nice though, hah. This results in more drastic measures:
-The church area in Korbin Village that was taken out in later versions:

(Notice how the door is actually made of window tiles.)

Rofl, you know, reading that message gives me a really awesome nostalgic feeling. :'> Brings back so many memories - I used to get so many of those comments, heheh. Those were some good times though, I actually sorta miss using RTP music.

Edit:
@Injury:
Ooh, cool. I was just asking so that if I ever run into a problem with the website, I might be able to ask you about it. :)

I would be happy to give you some more nostalgia. :3

Y'know, I don't think it would hurt if you used some RTP... Perhaps during some little optional mini-game, or something.

Injury

Awesome Bro

I'd be more than happy to lend my HTML skills to you! Let me know, anytime!

edit: OK, that church is where I draw the line...thank bog you got wicked skills in all aspects now! :D

Hey, I was just screwing around with composing some things a little bit ago, and on a whim I decided to make your song "Suspicion" sound better than it's normal MIDI sounds. So I ran it through Reason using a nice sound pack I own and this resulted:

OGG Version:
Suspicion
Mp3 Version:
Suspicion
I figured it might help, but if you decide not to use it, that's okay. No need to credit me if you do either.

EDIT: Just did "The Haunted" in the same way:
OGG:
The Haunted
Mp3:
The Haunted
I made the pad into a choir, but I figured it suited it better. Hope you don't mind me doing this Reives.

To be honest, those early screens do not look as bad as some of you say they do. I guess some people want perfect map fidelity but for me maps are there so the story has a background to play its events on :) That's not to say those maps are good though and they would have harmed the presentation a lot. But note that there are many people out there who have difficulties producing even maps of that quality, unbelievable as it may sound. It's probably partially due to a lack of effort but also a lack of a sense for art and aesthetics, something that's hard to actively aqcuire.

Oh and about the window as a door on the church... That is actually original in my opinion. There's no rule that a door can not be made out of stained glass. You'd have to have a door opening animation for it to make it believable but it would be refreshingly "new".

I'd love to play that version one day  ;D Now, stop reminiscing and get back to work  :P

Ooh, thanks a lot for those versions, Arcanum! I've just been thinking about revamping the midis too! I really love some of the soundfonts in Reason, especially since it has non-orchestral instruments too. D: I will certainly use the Suspicion revamp, and am pretty sure that the The Haunted revamp will be too, but James wrote that, so I'll have to consult him with it first. Funny thing, back then he did produce a mp3 version of that (we only had the crappy Finale 2006 default sound library though), and he did change the pad to choir for it too.

@Ragura:
I see what you are saying. But I guess how I think of it is that while it does take somewhat of an artistic feel to map extraordinarily, it simply takes some getting used to to map decently (as in not a sore to the eye). To what level until that is considered to be though, is up to interpretation.

~~~
Just a little update on the progress of Chapter VII. I have finished editing most of the tilesets as needed (minus Korbin Village, thanks to Lunarea's generous help with that). I have also finished the first series of opening scenes to the chapter. So, so far, it's going smoothly. I have also been doing a little improvement work on the old maps, such as Korbin Woods. There are quite a few maps that could be worked on, but due to time constraints it probably won't happen.
That aside, I will leave the progress screenshots off this post for now, and leave you with this old intro screenshot, with a very minor refinement:
That change only applies to the intro, it is not a character design change. What it means is up to interpretation at this time. :)
Lunair has two different eye colors  :eek:
My interpretation of it is probably the effect of the quintessence (either its power or the venom)
I don't think I can wait months lol. I will die!
btw, html is pretty easy. If you need any help, I know quite a bit and so does Injury (or so he says)
Looks good, though I am unsure of what HTML really is.
Are you talking about HTML language or what, I am a newb still.
I am working on my game again, which should be out in 3-4 months.
The last one I helped make was kind of dumb, and was merely practice.
Two differnet eyes? Well that leaves room for some speculation.
In my opinion the venom gets stronger, so she starts to lose control over her abilities. Maybe poor Naira can't change back completely anymore? Would be rather interesting to see ^^
I'll just keep it at that its exact reason isn't really predictable at the moment, due to some pieces of information not yet given from the current chapters. :)
Some screenies; doesn't say much, but just for the sake of screenshot:
Korbin Village in autumn:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/ ... ed-2-5.jpg[/img]
(I really want to revamp that map, but all the events that take place on it makes it messy to do so and I'm too lazy to go around that for now. :x )
Revies you shouldn't mess with anything until game is finished.
Main Reason people may have saved in that certain area, and would
get stuck. So just fix minor things until you are finished. ;)
By the way isn't HTML website code?
@Helladen
its actually quite simple once you get the hang of it.
As for the new screenshots, I love the first one. It gives sort of a cliff-hanger type effect on me. I WANT to know what HAPPENS! Damn you and your amazing game lol. The second looks good aswell. Its not as good as your other maps, but its still average-above average. I'd say not to bother revamping it until you finish Chapter VII atleast if not the whole game.
Are all your backgrounds and panoramas custom made in Photoshop or something? or did you find them on Google? I think they're awesome, either way. I was just wondering where you got them from.
@Xathia:
Most of the current in-game panoramas are images purchased from a Chinese publisher. I am practicing to mimic the style at the moment, and am planning to replace them with my own when I get better in the future. :) Some of my current practice panoramas can be found at: http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/resources.html
Still have some distance to go on that, heheh.
@Bartolon:
Ya can find the walkthrough for the Chapter III game-play component here:
