It's really weird looking back at some old RM project readme files and seeing game developers write out an explanation for as to why they encrypted their game. Guess there was a lot of anti-encryption folk back in the day? Seems like a really odd thing for people to have a problem with. Someone makes a game, they don't want their resources or events or anything stolen, so they encrypt it. Seems very fair to me.

I've got this palm plant thing I brought inside for the winter. I've got a humidifier in my room, and I heard that the steam would be really good for this plant since it's tropical. So I put the plant in my room and notice it does look a lot healthy next to the steam and has been growing some new stems over the past week or so.
But now it reeeaks like sour milk. Idk if it always gives off that smell as the palms open or if some part of it is rotting in the pot.
Now my room stinks.

I may not agree with everyone here on some pretty fundamental issues, but I don't bring it up because it's not relevant to why I joined this community. And I'm not going to barge into someone's house just to pick a fight with him. The people here were very friendly, welcoming, and helpful when I needed help with Himeko Sutori. And I keep coming back because they stay friendly, welcoming, and helpful. I left RPG.net because they couldn't just discuss RPGs and their politics became intolerable. We don't have to turn this place into another internet brawl.

I think RPGs scratch an itch in a way reality doesn't with systems that will always reciprocate your actions in meaningful ways to compliment deficits. A wheel of samsara. A Causal plane of karmic patterns rooted in a database otherwise known as the akashic records. It is a realm of lesser lights, the bardo, between 2 lives. Where you realize everything is set in motion by you and letting go is the only escape.

Lately it's been a theme of isekai anime series to transition from earth to otherworld via reincarnation.
Bastion, in the Neverending Story, was trapped in Fantastica and went through a similar process of rebirth. Literally seeking the water of life.
The Kabalistic motifs featuring the Sephiroth in so many worlds is no coincidence either.
I hated, no, loathed Digimon Frontier for the longest time. They lacked Digimon partners and the meaningful relationship. But I can appreciate the whole Spirit Evolution thing now and understand what they were doing with Sephirothmon and Mercurymon. It's genius. But frustratingly stupid.

I just started playing (20hrs in) Legend Of Legaia to beat it because I never did. Man I can’t help but smile at how amazing this game is. They really don’t make games like this anymore. There’s so many different aspects that go into why this game is so great. After the company went defunct and whoever the fuck picked it up REALLY dropped the ball. I would really love for a part 3 to be picked up by a company that understands what made this great.

Looking at some ideas on a GBA RPG project and what's possible with the hardware from a modern context.

• Perspective 3D, rotating world map
• Parallax scrolling battle scenes
• Up to 4 players controlling party members in battle (support wireless adapter?)
• Balloon message boxes
• Shadows
• Half-tile movement
• Wavy water reflections
• Random weather
• Time of day (Real time clock if available, otherwise on an in-game cycle)
• Configurable screen type (GBA, SP - default if DS BIOS detected, TV)
• Bonus enhancements with compatible flash carts SD file systems (Voice acting? FMV videos? Higher quality music? Mod support?)
• Sub pixel quality bitmap artwork (when available)
• PC connectivity of some kind via GameCube USB adapter (maybe multiplayer with a future PC version or an online network system?)
• GameCube Player gamepad rumble support

EDIT: It would be very interesting to build custom tracker software for producing audio that advantage of the full-range of audio options on the GBA. Games on that system traditionally would either use Gameboy audio for music, PCM for sound effects, or PCM for music, Gameboy audio for sound effects, or entirely PCM (in the worst case scenario, entirely Gameboy!).

It would be cool to make a tracker that lets someone make a single music track use both Gameboy and PCM in it. Not sure what the tangible benefit would be - PCM can emulate the Gameboy audio "good enough" so going entirely PCM is probably still acceptable, but maybe the cleaner Gameboy sound will actually come through and be noticeable.
