(stuff I turned off immediately)
You probably meant "stuff i set to only basic data collection".
Even with registry hacks, hostfile edits, you cannot turn off basic data collection, which reportedly still includes keyboard input and mouse clicks (I haven't tested the packets myself, so I'm trusting other people that claim to have).
If I'm wrong, please share instructions. Win10 bypasses hosts file for most Microsoft stuff. I added the suggested list anyway. I've set my connection to metered, I've tightened every option available in privacy (including setting data collection to Basic Data, which is the lowest option in Pro, at least). I used group policy editor to defer updates, so I only get them every 90 days, and thanks to the metered connection flag I only get critical updates.
I do have the tool to block specific updates, so I suppose I could go in every day-before-90-days and block them all, but... that's kind of a pain.
Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love Windows 10 as an OS - beautiful interface, software compatibility, control panel. But the whole "OS as a service" thing, not cool. I waited a year just to upgrade because I find it so uncool. I don't like having the possibility of turning my computer on one day to be denied service because I broke a rule (which probably includes stuff like no custom themes that I didnt buy from M$, no blocking updates, no reverse engineering anything, etc). In practice, it will likely not play out that way. But I'm not a fan of leaving that possibility open.
I guess the simplest way to put it is that I love the product, Windows (with a couple excepted gripes about Win10), but not a big fan of the company behind it.
If there's a way to turn off the last critical updates and "basic" data collection, I'd be very happy. I really, really want to be wrong on this one, please prove me wrong lol
