Post What's on Your Mind

Eclipse in about 11 hours.
Worst case scenario - it's cloudy.
Best case scenario - I get super powers

I kinda want to watch Ladyhawke. Or re watch Heroes.

Jupiter should be visible during the eclipse. So Trump's not going to die. (It's some ancient superstition thing to do with kings)

Can't get over how good Waifu2x is with anime artwork. I wonder if it could be used to create 4k anime...Hmmmmmmmm

EDIT: If you want to know where this brief thought led to, my GPUs are currently rendering out the frames of the opening sequence of Sakura Trick at 1440p - lol
4k would take about 1.5 hours to render. Damn my PC is amazingly powerful.

EDIT2: The results of this brief experiment - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17R1K887h4E
Check it out in 720p, that's the original resolution - however Waifu2x performs noise reduction, so 720p here is still better than the source video. Then check it out in 1440p - it's a massive difference.

I did a couple of frames in 4k, it's even better. It takes a lot of time, but with a GPU farm the work load can be split up. I can imagine an entire episode only taking a day to Waifu2x. Really amazing results.

Here's an image comparison of the title card display frame, taken a 720p cut-out of the middle of it; http://imgur.com/avEZjcR

A single 8k frame took about 18 seconds to output on one GPU and it's 79% the file size of the entire original source video without audio. There's 2151 frames in this 1:29 OP. It would take around 6 hours to render this out in 8k on my PC with two GPUs and it would be about 25 Gigabytes.

It's not exactly efficient, but I'll agree that it looks damn good. I wonder how well the 1440p render would do when played at 60fps using SVPs frame interpolation...

I picked Sakura Trick specifically because I knew its style was more crisp and simple, and my copies are 720p with some compression noise that Waifu2x was perfect for resolving.

Last night I did a 4k upscale for HaNaYaMaTa's OP, which is here; https://vimeo.com/230789413 that cleared up some of the compression noise from the 1080p source, but it's not as dramatic an improvement compared to Sakura Trick, probably because there's so much bloom in HaNaYaMaTa. Look at the 1080p versus 4k to have a rough idea of what the before and after looks like - even on a 1080p monitor you'll see the difference due to compression and super-sampling.

I looked into SVP last-night whilst I was waiting for the renders. It looks great, it certainly appears to remove the horrible judder of a ~24 FPS anime playing on a 60Hz monitor. If there's an easy way to convert videos that doesn't involve running it through a player with a load of script hooks, then I'll like to try it with some of these Waifu2x videos.

Anyone know if the cheap VR goggles you just shove an android in are any good? We sell a set at work for £9.
No they're basically Google Cardboard but £9 over-priced. Best you'll get to do is view 360 videos in them and have an awful experience watching porn that way.

I really have no idea what you're talking about, but I do understand that you're doing something with video, and it can take a long time to render stuff with your current setup, which even has two GPUs. And now I have to plug Amazon Web Services again. Their p2-family of instances is meant for GPU-heavy calculations, especially those that depend on CUDA. If you really want to blow through that upscaling, try an Amazon p2.16xlarge, which gives you 16 NVIDIA K80 GPUs, 64 Xeon E5-2686 CPUs, and 192 gigs of RAM.

It's not worth doing remotely when all I'm doing are brief tests and demos at the moment. Wouldn't want to try and do a full episode of an anime, not without getting some kind of payment for that.

I've had a couple of them. They're mostly shit to be honest. If you want a good set of cheap VR goggles the best you're going to get is Samsung gear. It's pretty good for what it is and the phone is also pretty sweet.

We just got an Oculus on the price drop. Nothing will truly beat this kind of VR.

The way I see it VR comes in 3 flavors:
Bitter (google cardboard) - You are literally an observer, you have no way to interact with the world around you.
Salty (Samsung Gear) - You have limited interaction, such as: the ability to teleport around or touch a button.
Sweet (Oculus rift/HTC Vive) - You have the ability to fully interact and control the environment around you.

I was pulling Sand Burrs out of the ground and throwing them into a fire.
Now when I close my eyes I see the stems spread out in a star pattern tipped with burrs. And the sound of roots being ripped out of the ground.

That sounds like a job. Art by itself is fun. But I can't relax with my anxiety alarm going off in my head saying "I got to do this. People are waiting on me. I gotta keep my promises."
I mean, I like doing resource requests when they're small easy things I can do to kill an hour or so on a friday night at home.
But bigger projects are more worrisome. I have to plan for this irregular activity that I should be treating as a full time job. And towards the last half of the year, there are so many holidays and organized events going on, I get nothing done.
