From the POV of a Brit, seems like they defend their right to have guns for the sake of defending their right to have guns, doesn't seem like they understand why they have that right to begin with. The counter point would be "to protect my family and my property".
I can totally understand farmers having guns to kill vermin and threats to their livestock - I completely sympathise with that - and I understand using guns for sport, that's totally fine, but having a gun hanging around your house waiting for someone to pick it up and shoot with it seems silly. You don't know who's going to pick the gun up first.
If you have it locked away, then you can guarantee you're not going to be the first to pick it up if an intruder surprises you.
What America probably needs is tighter gun control introduced over time.
